Chapter 373 I Don't Want Your Generous Reward
Eliza's appearance excited Hobart, the old man. His granddaughter had been missing for two years, and now she had finally returned. Could there be anything more joyful than this? Moreover, Eliza was no ordinary girl; she was going to inherit the Hughes Group.
Many people followed behind Hobart as he stepped forward, including his three children and numerous executives and employees from the company. It was evident that Hobart attached great importance to Eliza's return.
Soon, Hobart stood before William, his gaze immediately falling on the timid Eliza. Her small face was filled with nervousness and unease, and she was hiding herself behind William.
"Eliza, you've finally come back! I am your grandfather!" Hobart said excitedly as he crouched down, wanting to hug Eliza. However, she hid behind William.
Hobart's smile froze, feeling an inexplicable sense of heartache.
"Eliza, he is your grandfather. Go and address him." William instinctively crouched down and urged Eliza, but she tightly held onto William's clothes, showing no intention of calling him grandfather.
Hobart sighed and then said to William, "I already know everything about my granddaughter. Thank you for rescuing her. Let's talk inside."
"Eliza may not be used to it yet. It will get better as you spend more time together," William comforted him. It was indeed a bit uncomfortable for such an old man to not be accepted by his own granddaughter.
William carried Eliza and walked toward the company building, while Hobart's three children came over to flatter him. William had no choice but to chat with them for a while. The Hughes family was the second-ranked family among the family clans, so it was necessary to establish connections.
"Are you still using the gold card I gave you? That private club will definitely fulfill all your desires," Burgundy whispered to William.
"I will visit it when I have time." William nodded.
"Don't wait any longer. I will take you there tonight. I guarantee you will experience extreme pleasure!" Burgundy, the most indulgent among his siblings, spared no expense this time to win William over. He had already spent a fifty million dollars on the golden mansion he gave to William.
"Maybe next time," William declined politely. He couldn't afford a house full of beautiful women.
Soon, Hobart led William to the chairman's office.
"You all can leave now," Hobart said to his children and subordinates in a commanding tone. He knew exactly what was going on in their minds.
Burgundy and the others acknowledged his orders and left.
In the chairman's office, only William, Hobart, and Eliza remained.
"Haha, don't laugh at me. My three children are all worthless," Hobart said wearily as he sat down on the sofa and made a cup of tea for William.
"At least the three of them care about Eliza. They went all the way to Long Island to bring her gifts," William said, hinting to Hobart that his three children were competing for guardianship rights over Eliza.
"How could I not know their intentions?" Hobart sighed. "If it wasn't for the death of my most capable son, I wouldn't have resorted to this method to motivate them."
"In fact, this is how most big families are. You should try to accept it." William didn't know how to comfort him. Over the past year, he had witnessed and heard about many power struggles within families. Fortunately, there was no need for him to worry about inheritance disputes.
Otherwise, he would also have to compete and struggle with his brothers and friends. Thinking about this, William felt incredibly fortunate.
"You found Eliza for me. I should reward you generously. Tell me, what do you want? I can fulfill all your wishes," Hobart said after taking a sip of tea.
"I don't want your rewards. I just want you to protect her this time and ensure that Eliza doesn't experience any more accidents," William said calmly. If it weren't for the increasingly dangerous tasks he had to undertake, William wouldn't have returned Eliza to the Hughes family.
"What? You don't want my rewards?" Hobart was surprised. The Hughes family could fulfill almost any request from William. Yet, he refused, which was unexpected.
"If you really want to reward me, remember to eliminate the Graham family. They were the ones who kidnapped Eliza," William said calmly.
William believed that bringing the Hughes family onto the same side would be the best outcome.
"The Graham family!" A cold light flashed in Hobart's eyes. He forcefully placed his teacup on the coffee table and said in a cold voice, "I will handle this matter. It is related to my son's death, and I will avenge him."
"That's settled then! I'll leave Eliza here for now," William said as he tried to stand up. However, Eliza kept holding onto the hem of his clothes.
"William, are you really going to abandon me? You lied to me!" Tears welled up in Eliza's big eyes, giving her a heartbreaking appearance.
William felt reluctant, but he had no choice but to leave her here.
"Be good, Eliza. I'll come see you once I finish everything." William rubbed Eliza's head, his nose tingling.
"Don't leave me, please. I'll be good." Eliza tightly held onto William's clothes, her face filled with stubbornness and reluctance.
"Be a good girl, Eliza." William said. He didn't want to see Eliza so heartbroken, so he gently tapped her back, causing her to faint instantly.
Seeing this, Hobart approached her with concern.
"Is my granddaughter okay?"
"She's fine. She just fainted. She'll wake up soon." William picked up Eliza and handed her over to Hobart.
"Take good care of her and make sure she doesn't get hurt again, or else I'll hold you accountable." William slammed his palm on the thick solid wooden desk, instantly reducing it to rubble, with office documents scattering all over the floor.
Hobart was dumbfounded by the scene, but he soon remembered what his three children had told him about William. He was able to catch bullets with his bare hands!
Taking a few steps forward, he seemed to have made up his mind.
"After I pass away, you will be my granddaughter's guardian, and she will inherit the Hughes Group!"
Hobart wasn't foolish. This move was only to secure a way of survival for his granddaughter.
As a young and immensely powerful expert, William undoubtedly had an extraordinary background. Moreover, the key was that he truly cared for his granddaughter, which sealed Hobart's decision in an instant.
As for his three incompetent children, Hobart had never considered giving them guardianship over his granddaughter.
