Chapter 236 Don't Compare Yourself to Me
Garden Villa, this was the place Ralph arranged for William to stay. In Long Island, Garden Villa was considered a mid-tier villa, and this was what William requested, a more ordinary place to live.
The morning sunlight shone through the windows onto a wide bed, where a wounded woman lay with her eyes closed. She had an extremely captivating appearance, but her face was weak and pale.
She had an IV drip in her hand, indicating that she had suffered significant injuries. Otherwise, there would have been no need for the drip.
Meanwhile, William lay on the bed, sleeping with his face down. He had stayed with this unfamiliar woman for most of the night. In the end, he was too tired and fell asleep on the bed.
Lillian slowly regained her consciousness.
Waking up, the first thing Lillian saw when she opened her eyes was a rather exquisite room. The large French windows, along with the curtains, were her favorite style. She faintly recalled that her family also had French windows like these, but everything vanished into thin air with her father's death.
After weakly scanning the room, her gaze finally landed on the man resting on the bed. He was dressed in cheap clothes, resembling someone from a poor district. However, Lillian knew that this very man had singlehandedly repelled over a hundred people led by Pablo last night.
"I wonder how he managed to do it." Lillian was quite curious. She tried to move her body but noticed that she was wrapped in numerous white bandages. Her black outfit and leather pants were nowhere to be found, replaced with loose home pajamas.
"Could it be that he changed my clothes last night, even my underwear?" Thinking about this, Lillian felt both shy and indignant. This was the first time she had been exposed to someone like this.
Feeling a mix of embarrassment and anger, she kicked William with her foot through the blankets. William was awakened by the kick, looking bewildered. Seeing that William had been woken up by her, Lillian quickly closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep.
"Who kicked me?" William, still feeling drowsy, rubbed his eyes and looked around. Lillian, who had been lying on the bed all along, was not one of his suspects.
"I'll just sleep a bit longer." William thought he was dreaming and closed his eyes again.
Seeing William fall asleep again, Lillian couldn't help but kick him once more.
William seemed to have a realization after being kicked again.
"Don't pretend to sleep. I saved you and brought you back. Can't you be grateful? Believe me, I'll throw you outside right now if you don't show some gratitude," William said in an annoyed tone.
Hearing this, Lillian stopped pretending to sleep, opened her eyes, and retorted, glaring at him.
"What did you do to me while I was unconscious and injured last night? Who changed my clothes?"
William was taken aback. So this girl was mad at him because of that. No wonder she kicked him twice in a row.
"Rest assured, I didn't do anything to you. The two girls from last night gave you some medicine. And it was the nurse who changed your clothes and cleaned your body. Trust me, I have no desire to see your body!" William said angrily.
"I have a great figure!" Lillian felt even angrier. This poor man just didn't know how to speak.
"Fine, I don't have time to argue with you. I'm going to take a shower now. I did everything to save you last night, and you can't even show gratitude. Instead, you kicked me twice. If I had known, I would've let you die in the MA club last night," William said discontentedly.
After leaving this remark, he prepared to go take a shower. However, when he was about to reach the door, Lillian suddenly called out to him with an unnatural expression.
"My name is Lillian. Thank you," she said.
"What are you thanking me for?" William raised an eyebrow, surprised that the girl knew how to say thank you.
"Thank you for saving my life," Lillian said after hesitating for a moment.
"I'm William Brown. Remember, from now on, your life is in my hands. And the doctor said you need to rest for a week, so it's best if you stay here and rest. As for your revenge, you shouldn't think about it for now," William said lightly.
"How do you know I want revenge?" Lillian suddenly changed her expression.
"When you had a fever last night, you talked a lot in your sleep. I heard it all, although it was sporadic. You can tell me about it later. I'm still very interested," William said, his lips curling.
He then turned around and left to take a shower. He had to go to Julia's house for lunch later. When he opened his phone earlier, he saw several missed calls from Julia and Michelle. They also sent him a WhatsApp message inviting him to have lunch at Julia's house.
William took a shower, changed clothes, and left.
There was a nurse named Madelyn taking care of Lillian in the villa. She was sent by Ralph, and besides providing nursing care, she could also do other tasks, including housework and cooking, like a semi-nanny.
William felt more at ease leaving Lillian in Madelyn's care.
When William arrived by taxi, Julia and Michelle were already waiting at the door.
"William, you finally came. How is the woman from last night?" Michelle asked with concern as soon as they met.
"She's in the house the company provided for me. I found a nurse to take care of her. Her fever has gone down now," William said.
"That's good. But William, you should stay away from her in the future. She's too dangerous," Michelle said, genuinely worried.
"Yes, William, you don't know. Yesterday, she really tried to kill me. I was so scared," Julia also tried to persuade him. Thinking back to last night's scene, she still felt lingering fear. In Julia's opinion, this woman was definitely ruthless.
"Don't worry, she's injured. She won't pose a threat to me," William said calmly.
The three of them chatted and soon arrived at Julia's house.
The villa was worth more than ten million dollars. The interior decoration was luxurious, indicating that Julia's family was wealthy.
When William entered, Julia's parents had already set up a banquet. There were two young people accompanying them. Perhaps Julia's parents thought that young people would have more topics to chat about, or they purposely wanted to introduce them to each other.
William and Julia's parents were sitting at the table, and William could feel their eager eyes on him.
They slowly got acquainted, initially quite friendly, considering that William had saved their daughter's life. But when they realized William was a poor man from a poverty-stricken area, they couldn't hide their disdain.
"William, please take a seat," Julia's mother, Linda, said as she was about to go to the kitchen, but Julia's father, Oscar, stopped her. "No need to add more dishes. We can't even finish what's already on the table, so why add more?"
Does a poor person really need such an extravagant treatment?
William noticed their disapproving gaze, but he didn't mind. After being led to his seat by Julia, she enthusiastically introduced the two young people sitting there.
"This is my cousin, Xavier. He graduated from MIT and started an internet finance company after returning to the country. It's been just a year, and it's already valued at $3 billion. Multiple investment firms are interested and ready to invest heavily."
Following Julia's gesture, William looked at her cousin. He had a polite and gentle appearance, seeming very honest. However, his eyes occasionally glanced at Michelle, who was sitting beside William.
After introducing her cousin, Julia continued with the introduction of another young person.
"This is my cousin, Dominic. He graduated from Cambridge University and is dedicated to the e-commerce industry. His social e-commerce company is currently valued at over $5 billion. Many investment firms are interested, and I heard that Long Island's hottest company, WE ARE Chamber, is also considering investment."
William looked at Dominic. He was a bit overweight.
"It's an honor to meet both of you," William said, pouring himself a glass of wine and toasting them.
However, neither of them lifted their glasses, seemingly looking down on William.
"I wonder what you do for a living and what your net worth is," Xavier said.
"I work in program production!" William responded calmly. He didn't want to argue unnecessarily about status with others. If he were to compare, the achievements of these two young people at the table would not impress him.
"Engaged in program production? So you work for someone?" Dominic shook his head, looking quite disdainful.
William wasn't angry. On the contrary, Michelle next to him was anxious.
"What's wrong with working for someone? The show William produced, 'Wilderness Life,' is still the number one national TV show in terms of ratings. Hmph!"
Michelle was a bit angry that her boyfriend was being looked down upon.
"What's the use of being number one in ratings? In the end, you're still working for someone," Xavier said contemptuously, shaking his head. Such variety shows held no value in his eyes.
"I don't really care to watch," she said.
"Michelle, with a net worth of over ten billion dollars, how did you end up with a boyfriend like this?" Dominic commented.
Michelle was angry. She was about to reply, but William stopped her. He realized that these two young men wanted to show off their superiority to Michelle and insult him in the process.
He said calmly, "It's easy to attract investment for a project. Just a few days ago, a company called WE ARE Chamber called me personally. They were impressed with my expertise in program production and wanted to invest five billion dollars to establish an internet-based content production company, but I turned them down."
Upon hearing this, everyone present was shocked, but Xavier quickly reacted and sneered, "Are you bragging? WE ARE Chamber is an investment company headed by Mr. Brown himself. After establishing a branch on Long Island, countless people have tried to secure investment but failed. You're just bluffing."
Dominic, who was by his side, laughed and said, "Boasting is not a good thing. You rejected a five billion dollar investment? Are you trying to make me laugh to death? I happen to have Antony's number. He personally reviewed my project before. Would you dare to call him right now for verification?"
