Chapter1 16: I Am No Longer Juniper
Michael paused for a moment, then reached out and touched her head, saying, "What nonsense are you talking about? We're engaged, of course I want to marry you. I've never proposed to anyone before. Are you going to reject me?"
Sinclair swallowed and asked directly, "Do you want to marry me as Sinclair, or do you want to marry Juniper's stand-in?"
Once those words were spoken, there was no turning back.
The atmosphere fell into a dead silence.
Michael looked at her without saying a word. They remained silent for a long time.
Suddenly, he seemed to ignore her words. "It's late, go to bed, we have work to do tomorrow."
He turned and went into the bedroom, not caring if Sinclair followed or not. It was like he chose to avoid the situation.
Sinclair stood in the living room, eventually crying in frustration.
No wonder Patricia always looked down on her, saying she was just lucky, that if it weren't for her face, Michael wouldn't like her. She initially thought Patricia meant that she was just pretty. Now she realized that Patricia meant Michael liked her because her face resembled Juniper's.
Everything she had was because of Juniper.
Meanwhile, at Lindwood City Airport, Juniper had just gotten off the plane. She had finally set foot on this land once again and was feeling extremely excited.
It was the first time she truly understood the feeling of returning home as described in books. A wandering heart found its home and finally landed.
A black Bentley pulled up in front of her. The window rolled down, revealing Ronald.
"Get in, Christopher sent me to pick you up."
Ronald got out of the car and put Juniper's luggage in the trunk. Juniper sat in the passenger seat.
"Ronald, thank you for picking me up, I could have just taken a taxi."
Over the past year, she had been in frequent contact with Christopher and Ronald. With increased contact, they had become closer.
Ronald often called to check on her. Ronald was cold on the outside but warm-hearted, and over time, Juniper began to see him as an older brother.
He leaned over to help her fasten her seatbelt. Juniper had already fastened it herself, saying, "I can do it myself."
Ronald's gesture fell flat, feeling a bit awkward, he cleared his throat. As he started the car, he asked, "Are you recovering well?"
"I am, but the doctor said I need to go to the hospital regularly for oxygen. As long as I don't overexert myself, there shouldn't be any major issues."
"That's good."
They talked more on the phone, and Ronald was more natural over the phone. When they met in person, Ronald seemed unsure how to chat with her.
After thinking for a while, he found a topic to talk about. "By the way, your songs are great. I've listened to them online, no wonder they're so popular."
This time, Juniper felt embarrassed. "I just sang casually, I didn't expect to get so many views. Maybe it's because I don't show my face online. It piqued curiosity among netizens, so it became popular. But at least I've got that as a side gig so I can pay Christopher back sooner."
Over the past year, Juniper had been doing therapy overseas. She had a lot of free time between her therapy sessions, and she suddenly remembered Ophelia's suggestion to sing online without showing her face. Ophelia said her singing was so good that she could cover other people's songs and become an online singer.
Juniper tried it and became famous. Her first video gained her half a million followers. Subsequent videos, all without showing her face pushed her follower count to five million.
"Christopher wasn't serious about it, he won't make you pay him back."
Juniper smiled faintly, "Christopher has helped me so much, I should repay him."
Ronald nodded in understanding. Like Juniper, he didn't like owing others. "By the way, what are your plans for this trip back? You're so famous online, do you want to sign with an agency?"
"Sign?" Juniper was currently independent, and her online videos didn't belong to any company.
Ronald suggested, "Yes, with your great singing, if you sign with some record companies, they should be able to promote you better."
"I haven't decided yet, but now that I'm back, I'll take it a step at a time."
"That works. You just got back, so take it easy. Want to explore Lindwood City? There are many attractions that you haven't seen. How about tomorrow? I'll take you around."
"I might be busy tomorrow, I've already booked a flight back to Imperial Capital early in the morning."
Ronald was taken aback, "Are you going to see Magnus?"
Hearing Magnus's name again, Juniper's heart still trembled intensely. She forced a smile, shaking her head, "No, why would I go see him? To rekindle an old flame? I'm back this time because it's my mother's memorial day, I want to pay my respects and then return to Lindwood City. I'll go quietly, come back quietly, I shouldn't be noticed."
Besides, in Magnus's eyes, Juniper should have been long gone.
Ronald asked, "Do you want me to go with you? In case you run into someone you shouldn't, I can help you deal with it."
"Ronald, aren't you busy?"
Juniper's question caught Ronald off guard. He quickly responded, "Not really, I have time."
Juniper seriously considered Ronald's suggestion. 'If you're free and can accompany me to Imperial Capital, that would be the best.'
"Okay, I'll go with you tomorrow."
Juniper turned to look at the lights outside the car window. She hadn't thought about what would happen if she met Magnus again.
She didn't want to see Magnus again.
Over the past year, she had thought about many things. At the Mayo Clinic, she had been treating her lung issues and actively addressing her depression.
It had initially been difficult in a foreign land. The treatment process had been painful. Fortunately, Christopher and Ronald had always called to comfort her.
Without their care, she might have found it hard to continue. Christopher and Ronald were both her saviors.
Seeing her lost in thought, Ronald finally asked, "Juniper, after returning to Imperial Capital, do you really not plan to see him again?"
The 'him' naturally referred to Magnus. Juniper chuckled, "A year ago, Christopher saved me, allowing me to continue living under a false identity. Since then, I decided not to be Juniper anymore. Those who want to see Magnus again, who can't forget Magnus, are Juniper. But I'm no longer Juniper."
