Chapter 388 School Anniversary Celebration (2)
Juniper and Ophelia took a stroll around the school.
Over the years, the school's appearance hadn't changed much, except for the renovation of the playground and basketball court.
They were about to check out the food at the cafeteria when Juniper received a call from Magnus.
Magnus asked, "Where are you?"
"I'm with Ophelia near the second cafeteria. Are you coming to find us?"
Magnus said, "The principal asked me to give a speech to the students in the lecture hall. I probably won't be able to get away for a while. Can you come find me?"
Juniper agreed and, after hanging up, asked Ophelia, "Magnus is giving a speech in the lecture hall. Want to go?"
Ophelia's eyes lit up, "Of course! This is such good gossip. Luckily, I brought my camera! I knew I'd get some news on these big shots today!"
As they walked towards the building with the lecture hall, they passed by the school anniversary donation board.
The listed donations were all substantial, none less than a million dollars.
Ophelia sighed, "The finance department really does produce talent. I should have majored in finance in college!"
Juniper noticed a few familiar names, "Thomas donated too, fifty million dollars."
Hearing that name, Ophelia paused for a moment.
She forced a nonchalant smile, "The poor kids from back then have all turned into business tycoons."
Juniper looked at her, "Do you think Thomas might also be giving a speech in the lecture hall?"
After all, he was quite a legend too.
Thomas was only a year behind Magnus and Robert.
But five years ago, after Thomas and Ophelia's abrupt breakup, he had completely disappeared.
It was later known that after graduation, Thomas had gone to Elysium to start his own business.
Ophelia shrugged, not believing in such coincidences, "Let's go check it out. Maybe we'll get two big news stories, and I won't have to worry about my KPI this month."
Coincidentally, just as they reached the corridor on the floor of the lecture hall, the person they had just mentioned appeared before them.
Thomas walked out of the third lecture hall, chatting with school leaders. When he looked up, he saw Ophelia standing there with her camera.
From a distance, Ophelia froze, her scalp tingling.
She forced a smile and whispered to Juniper, "Since when did your words become so prophetic? Everything you say comes true."
Juniper replied, "Your KPI is here, go for it."
Ophelia said sarcastically, "Oh, right, thank you so much."
Thomas started walking towards them.
Ophelia felt rooted to the spot.
Juniper helped her move, "Are you paralyzed?"
Ophelia said, "I don't know what expression to put on."
Juniper advised, "A polite smile, as if you don't know him."
Ophelia gritted her teeth and chuckled, "You really are experienced."
But Thomas had no intention of pretending not to know her.
He walked over steadily, "Long time no see, Ophelia."
Ophelia's smile was stiff, "Hi."
Thomas took the initiative, "Got time to chat?"
"I... I... might not be..."
Before she could finish her refusal.
A familiar male voice suddenly sounded from behind, "She's not available to chat with you."
Ophelia's nerves tightened.
Wasn't that Robert's voice?
Didn't he say he wouldn't come to such a boring school anniversary?
Before she could react, her wrist was already grabbed.
Robert pulled Ophelia to his side, his gaze coldly sweeping over Thomas, "Ophelia is now the daughter-in-law of the Browns. Private chats are out of the question; it doesn't look good. If you have something to say, say it here."
"So being the daughter-in-law of the Browns means having no freedom? Not even the freedom to catch up with old friends?"
Thomas's smile was gentle, but his words were sharp.
Robert's smile turned cold, "An ex-boyfriend from years ago counts as a friend? The mindset of someone who's been abroad is really different. Do you enjoy harassing married exes that much?"
Thomas's gaze fell on Robert's hand gripping Ophelia's wrist.
He smiled indifferently, his eyes clear, "That's interesting. You know what, our country always prides itself on being open and free, yet I had no idea that arranged marriages still exist in this day and age. I've never even seen such a thing abroad.
Arranged marriages.
These words starkly mocked the emotionless, sham of a marriage between Robert and Ophelia.
It was like a slap in the face for Robert.
Robert was born into a political family, where reputation and status were as valuable as gold.
Thomas had undoubtedly humiliated him severely.
Robert's face turned icy, and his tone was sharp and unkind. "Do you understand what mutual consent means? Mr. Hawthorne, after spending a few years abroad, you must have forgotten the social norms here."
"Let me teach you how things work here. You have no right to interfere in a couple's marriage."
Robert looked at Thomas nonchalantly, his lips curling arrogantly and wickedly.
He tightened his grip on Ophelia's wrist, pulling her into his arms.
His long arm wrapped around Ophelia's shoulder.
Ophelia instinctively tried to struggle.
Robert glanced down at her, his look dangerous and domineering, a clear warning.
Ophelia, surprisingly, felt intimidated and allowed him to hold her as they walked forward.
When they reached Thomas.
Robert smirked, "Mr. Hawthorne, please step aside."
Thomas frowned deeply, "Have you ever respected Ophelia's feelings?"
Robert, holding Ophelia, walked past, his shoulder forcefully bumping into Thomas's. They brushed past each other.
Robert arrogantly said, "How other couples get along is none of your business."
The tension in the air was thick and lingering.
Thomas left.
Ophelia, summoning some courage, pushed Robert's hand off her shoulder, "Have you had enough of this act?"
Robert's eyes were dark and menacing, and his tone was lazily cold, "What, seeing your old flame has you all stirred up? He's not far, want to go after him?"
Ophelia's eyes reddened with anger, "I do want to go after him, but you didn't agree to a divorce! My morals are keeping me here."
Robert sneered, "So you do have some morals, knowing not to cheat while still married."
His lips curled into a smile, but it was dark and chilling.
The atmosphere became tense and confrontational.
As they were about to start arguing, Juniper walked over and took Ophelia's hand, not trying to mediate, just saying, "Mr. Brown, Magnus's lecture is starting. Ophelia and I are going in."
