Chapter 215: Dead Without Evidence
Theater's choked with smoke, alarms going nuts.
Magnus had just stepped out of the concert hall when a crowd surged out of the small emergency exit, scrambling to escape.
No sign of Juniper in that mess.
Fire broke out of nowhere, and the fire department was MIA.
The crowd was in a panic.
Everyone was pushing out, but Magnus was diving back in.
Folks who made it out were yelling, "There's a fire, man! Don't go in!"
Another one hollered, "What the hell are you doing? Get outta there!"
But Magnus wasn't listening, screaming, "Juniper!" as he charged inside.
He yelled her name a million times, but nada.
The fire in the concert hall was getting worse.
As Magnus dashed in amid the roaring flames, he spotted Juniper lying unconscious on the ground.
A gun aimed right at her.
The bullet was about to be loaded!
Magnus lunged, wrestling with the guy.
He grabbed the dude's gun hand, twisted it, and fired a shot at the ceiling.
The small pistol had about six bullets.
The guy was no amateur, strong as hell. When Magnus grabbed his right hand, he dropped the gun, kicked it up with his right foot, caught it with his left, and fired at Magnus's head!
Magnus ducked, the bullet just nicking his hat and hitting the wall.
He grabbed the guy's left wrist, and the dude fired two more shots!
One hit the stage!
The other hit a light fixture!
Sparks flew everywhere.
Magnus flipped the guy over his shoulder, slamming him to the ground!
The gun went flying, and Magnus kicked it away hard!
The fire was raging.
The crystal chandelier above was swaying dangerously over Juniper.
The guy took advantage of Magnus looking at Juniper, punched him, and broke free.
The chandelier was about to fall!
Magnus grabbed Juniper, shielding her with his body.
Then the chandelier crashed down, smashing into Magnus's back!
Sparks flew, and the light fixture shattered on his back!
The guy found the gun, aiming it at Magnus's head again!
Just as he was about to pull the trigger, Ronald whacked him on the head with a steel pipe!
The guy was stunned, the gun slipping from his hand.
Ronald picked up the pipe and smashed the guy's head again!
The guy dropped like a sack of potatoes!
Ronald ripped off the guy's hood.
He'd hit him hard, and the guy was already dead!
But the priority now wasn't figuring out who this guy was, it was Juniper.
Ronald rushed over and shoved Magnus, who was holding Juniper, aside.
Magnus was shoved to the ground, his back injury flaring with intense pain.
He had a mask on, so Ronald didn't recognize him.
Ronald shook Juniper. "Quinn? Wake up!"
The fire department burst in.
Ronald picked up Juniper and told Magnus, who was lying on the ground, "I can only take one. The fire department's here, they'll get you out. Thanks for saving her!"
Magnus lay in the shattered crystal, watching Ronald carry Juniper away, out of sight.
He reached out for Juniper, staring after her, his eyes wet and red.
His whole body felt like it had been crushed.
In Southern City's People's Hospital, Magnus lay on a stretcher as medics wheeled him into the ER.
Juniper was out cold, lying on a gurney, with Ronald trailing behind.
Their gurneyes passed each other in the hallway.
Ronald, a bit out of it, did a double-take.
Was that Magnus?
He wasn't sure if he saw right.
He wanted to follow and check, but Juniper was already being wheeled into the exam room.
A nurse handed him a form, "Who are you to the patient?"
"I'm her brother," Ronald replied.
"Go pay the fee!"
Ronald rushed off to register and pay.
Meanwhile, Magnus was already being wheeled into surgery.
In the VIP ward, Juniper had been drugged and inhaled a ton of smoke. She already had lung issues, so after a few IV drips, she started to come around finally.
When she woke up, it was already the next morning.
As soon as she opened her eyes, a bunch of people were around her bed.
Christopher looked the most worried, "Quinn, how you feeling?"
Ronald, seeing her awake, said, "I'll go get the doctor."
Jerry helped Juniper adjust the bed.
When the doctortor arrived, he did a thorough check, "She inhaled isoflurane yesterday, but not too much. The drug's worn off now, she should be fine."
The doctor asked Juniper, "What's wrong with you?"
Juniper touched her head, feeling a bit fuzzy, "My head's a bit dizzy, and I've got some memory loss."
The doctor replied, "That's normal. By the afternoon, you should be better. Once this IV drip's done, you can go home."
Ronald, worried, asked, "Shouldn't she be observed for a few more days?"
"No need. I've seen her scans, there's no problem."
After the doctor left.
Juniper asked, "Ronald, what the heck happened yesterday? I only remember some guy in black covering me, then I blacked out."
Ronald answered, "Yesterday, the theater caught fire outta nowhere, and the guy who attacked you had a gun. I think it's some illegal group. When I got there after calling, the guy was about to shoot you. Quinn, you got any enemies?"
Upon hearing about the gun, Juniper's head throbbed, and she went a bit pale.
Besides Isolde and Alexander, she couldn't think of any other enemies.
But how could Isolde get her hands on a gun?
Juniper's head ached.
Ronald gently said, "Don't think about it. You need to rest. I'll look into it."
Juniper asked, "Ronald, did you get hurt saving me yesterday?"
The guy had a gun. How did Ronald save her without getting hurt?
Ronald shook his head, "I'm fine. But I wasn't the only one who saved you."
He added, "When you were out, I was just focused on saving you. Later, the fire department came and took him away. I didn't see his face clearly."
Ronald was being straight, not hiding anything.
Juniper nodded, "Ronald, can you help me find him? He saved me, I should at least thank him."
"Okay."
Christopher, standing nearby with a serious face, said, "We need to get to the bottom of this. Someone dared to hurt you in Southern City, they must have a death wish!"
Ronald nodded, "Yes, Dad."
Sophie looked at Ronald, "Ronald, you said the guy had a gun. What happened to him? Did the cops take him?"
"He's dead."
Sophie looked shocked and scared, "Dead?"
"I hit him a bit too hard. I wanted to keep him alive to get info on the group behind him."
Sophie thought to herself, 'That is great; dead men tell no tales, after all.'
She secretly sighed in relief. Ronald was pretty capable to take out the assassin.
