Chapter 90 Unexpected Farewell
"Who are you talking about?"
Seeing Lyra not far off, Ava became agitated, "It's her! She and her husband killed Benjamin! She's Alexander's wife. I want to confront her!"
Alexander's wife?
Could it be Juniper's mother?
Patricia's eyes lit up, "I'll go with you to ask her."
Lyra was deep in thought in her wheelchair when Ava burst into her field of vision.
Lyra, shaken, said, "Ava, I was just debating whether to look for you."
"You have to testify for me! Tell them Alexander killed Benjamin!"
Ava, frantic, grabbed her arm.
The wheelchair, not having its brakes engaged, wobbled with the pushing and pulling.
"Ava, listen to me, calm down."
"You killed Benjamin! Come with me and turn yourself in!"
Lyra pushed her away, wanting to explain.
"You and Juniper are truly mother and daughter! Both troublemakers! How dare you kill Magnus's father!"
Patricia steadied Ava and, with a surge of hatred, violently kicked the wheelchair.
The chair instantly flew down the steep staircase, tumbling to the bottom with a crash.
Due to the momentum, Lyra fell out of the wheelchair.
Her body rolled down the steps, overturning along with the chair.
Ava and Patricia were stunned.
At the foot of the stairs, the wheelchair lay on its side, and Lyra's head was bleeding profusely, a large pool of blood forming beneath her...
It looked like she was dead.
Patricia's lips trembled, "She's not dead, is she?"
Ava, pale with fear, said, "I didn't push her. I just wanted her to testify. I didn't want her to die!"
"I'll go check."
Patricia took a deep breath and approached cautiously.
She reached out toward Lyra's nostrils to check.
With a gasp, she recoiled in shock!
She hurried to Ava's side, her voice shaking, "She's not breathing, what do we do, Ava? What if Magnus finds out you pushed her, will he get mad?"
"I didn't push her!"
Ava, on the verge of tears, clutched her head as she felt a sharp pain in her brain.
Patricia, seeing her in an abnormal state, suddenly had a wicked thought: "Calm down, just listen to me."
"What should I do? I don't want to be a murderer. I didn't kill anyone."
"If Magnus asks you, you just say you don't know, that you don't know why it happened like this, and you have to stick to that story. Also, Magnus can't know that I was here today. If he finds out I visited, he'll definitely investigate thoroughly. If he digs deeper, he'll find out it was both of us and then Magnus will hate us."
Ava, baffled and panicked, just nodded her head.
She was terrified.
Patricia grabbed her shoulders, calming down with a firm tone, "You didn't see me today. I was never here. Remember, mum's the word!"
Ava, shaking with fear, nodded vehemently.
Patricia, feigning pity, said, "Ava, you know Magnus likes me, and I like him too. If Magnus finds out about this, it's over for us. Ava, being the kind-hearted person you are, you wouldn't want us to miss out on each other because of this, right?"
Ava nodded vigorously: "Don't worry, I won't say a thing."
Outside on the tree-lined path, someone was approaching.
Patricia's face tensed up, and she let go of Ava, quickly making her escape from the path and hurried away from the sanatorium.
She dove into her car and started it up, speeding off until she was well away from the facility.
The car screeched to a halt in a desolate area, its tires yowling against the pavement.
Patricia's head jerked forward from the sudden stop.
Clutching the steering wheel tightly, her face was ashen.
She was gasping for air.
It was Ava who had pushed that woman!
Not her!
She had done nothing!
Even if Ava spouted nonsense, who would believe the words of someone mentally ill?
Moreover, the testimony of a person with mental illness could not stand as evidence in court!
What was she scared of? She had nothing to fear.
With this in mind, Patricia looked up into the rearview mirror.
She grabbed a tissue and wiped the cold sweat from her face with determination.
The look of fear and panic in her eyes switched instantly to one of cunning and calculation.
As long as she didn't confess, no one would ever know what happened today.
Juniper, this time, you and Magnus are truly done!
Who would have thought that luck would be so on her side?
Patricia smirked, feeling confident that she had everything under control. She had just offered Ava an opportunity to inadvertently be part of a plan that would rid Patricia of Juniper's mother. Now that Ava would be implicated, she would have no choice but to obey Patricia and play matchmaker between her and Magnus or else face the consequences.
However, her scheme was not yet complete. She needed to create a solid alibi. She called Matthew. As soon as he answered, she invited him out for drinks.
"Drink? In broad daylight?" Matthew asked, surprised.
"Just meet me at the Windy Pub. Don't stand me up," Patricia replied with a light laugh.
After hanging up, Patricia touched up her makeup and applied lipstick. Her face, a mask of calm composure, betrayed none of the panic she had felt moments before. She then meticulously deleted all the data from her car's dashcam, erasing her movements entirely. How could she have met Juniper's mother when she didn't even know who she was?
Juniper, who had been dealing with severe menstrual cramps, was just starting to feel better and was about to get up to pour herself some hot water when she received a phone call from the nursing home.
"Juniper, you need to come to the nursing home right away!"
"What's happened to my mom?" she asked, anxiety rising in her voice.
"Your mother has fallen down the stairs. She's already..."
Juniper's heart skipped a beat, and she froze for a few seconds, her ears buzzing, unable to hear anything else from the other end of the line.
Juniper and Magnus arrived at the nursing home at the same time. The scene was untouched. Lyra lay at the bottom of the stairs, her body partially covered in a half-dried river of blood. Juniper stood there in shock, thinking perhaps she was seeing things.
"Mom..." She murmured softly to the motionless Lyra, who didn't hear her.
Juniper's eyes locked onto Lyra as she slowly walked over, brushing past Magnus.
"Juniper..." Magnus called out to her.
But Juniper continued forward as if she hadn't heard him, step by step until she reached Lyra's side.
"Mom, why are you lying here?" Juniper knelt beside her and lifted her into her arms. Lyra lay there quietly, resting in Juniper's embrace.
Juniper raised her hand and frantically tried to wipe the blood and dirt from her mother's face.
"Mom, wake up, I'm here now. Why are you lying here? Mom..." She held Lyra, her expression one of utter bewilderment. There were no tears in her eyes, just a numbness as she gently shook Lyra's shoulders.
"Mom, wake up, don't sleep now. Didn't we agree this morning to live to a ripe old age? Why would you... I told you, you're not a burden to me. Why did you do something so foolish? Please wake up, Mom. Talk to me, please wake up..."
