Chapter 295 Joining Forces to Get the Antidote
Maybe it was because Juniper's question came out of nowhere that Magnus didn't answer right away.
Feeling a bit awkward, Juniper cleared her throat and said, "Jenny told me to call you. She misses you. Got anything you wanna say to her?"
Magnus didn't call her out, just replied casually, "Sure."
Juniper called Jenny over and handed her the phone.
A tiny, childish voice came through, "Hi, Daddy?"
Magnus told her, "Mommy's been feeling tired lately. Let her rest at night and don't always bug her to play games with you."
"Okay! Daddy, we're going to Solara in a few days. Are you coming to see us off?"
Magnus's eyes darkened, "Not sure yet."
Jenny pouted, "If you don't come, Mommy will be sad. You just left, and now she's always daydreaming like she's got something on her mind!"
"Alright, be good and give the phone back to Mommy."
"Okay!"
Jenny handed the phone back to Juniper.
Juniper took it and said, "Don't listen to Jenny. I'm fine. If you really can't make it, then don't worry about seeing us off this time. We're just going to Solara for a bit, we'll be back."
Juniper refrained from pressuring him, as she believed that coercion in a relationship would diminish its spark and meaning.
Before hanging up, he called her name, "Juniper."
"Yeah?"
Magnus paused for a few seconds and said in a deep voice, "I miss you. More than you miss me."
Juniper held the phone, and though she didn't reply, she couldn't help but smile.
Jenny leaned over and, in her little voice, answered for Juniper, "Daddy! Mommy and I miss you too!"
The cold, somber look on Magnus's face softened a bit.
The door to the water dungeon opened again.
Paul walked out.
After Magnus and Juniper ended their call, Paul finally spoke, "Mr. Blackwood, the paternity test results for Christopher and Ms. Beaumont are in the car's glove box."
Magnus nodded slightly, "Don't tell anyone about that."
"Got it."
Everyone was watching SY and Windsor Group. If Juniper's identity was questioned, it could put her in serious danger.
In the car, Magnus opened the manila envelope and took out the paternity test.
His eyes scanned the result: [According to the test, the probability of parentage is greater than 99.99%, consistent with genetic laws.]
Magnus's eyes suddenly froze.
The Shadow Syndicate targeting Juniper and trying to kill her now made sense.
If Sophie was a plant by the Shadow Syndicate in the Abbotts, then Juniper, the real daughter of the Abbotts, had to go.
The reason Juniper was safe for now was because her identity hadn't been exposed yet.
Just as Magnus was holding the report, lost in thought, his phone rang.
The caller ID showed an unknown number.
But upon seeing the location was Southern City, he had a good idea who it was, so he answered the call.
A female voice came through, "Mr. Blackwood, it's me, Sophie. I'm glad you picked up."
Magnus sneered, "Looks like dislocating your arm last time wasn't enough. You still dare to call me."
Sophie chuckled, unfazed, "Not only do I dare to call you, Mr. Blackwood, but I also want to make a deal. Last time at the Abbott Mansion, with Juniper there, I couldn't really say anything. Now, it's just us. Feel free to speak your mind."
Magnus smirked, his voice dripping with menace, "I have nothing to discuss with you, especially not about relationships. Ms. Williams, smart people don't walk into the enemy's line of fire."
"How does Mr. Blackwood know I'm necessarily an enemy if we don't talk? Maybe I could become an ally. About relationships, indeed, there's nothing to discuss. I'm not that shallow. In the face of interests, feelings are worthless. We only talk business. Mr. Blackwood, don't you plan to give me a chance?"
Magnus's tone was icy, leaving no room for negotiation, "I don't like working with people I don't like."
Just as Magnus was about to hang up, Sophie spoke slowly and deliberately, "If you don't play along, you're done for."
Magnus's eyes darkened, a hint of hostility flashing through them. "How dare you threaten me? I think you're asking for trouble."
Sophie curled her red lips, "I'm just a pawn. Even if Mr. Blackwood kills me, it would only add trouble for yourself."
Magnus snorted coldly, "Well, at least you know your place."
"Mr. Blackwood, I know you've been poisoned with Venomshade, and so has Christopher. I've seen the antidote. There are only two, both held by the leader of the Shadow Syndicate."
Magnus frowned, "What do you mean by telling me this?"
"I mean we can join forces to get the antidote. But I have a condition," Sophie replied.
"What condition?" he asked.
"You should give one to me."
Magnus was indifferent, mocking, "Why should I hand over the antidote to you, someone who's got no connection to me?"
"You have no choice. Only I know where the antidotes are, and only I know how to deal with the Shadow Syndicate. If you don't want to join forces, then forget it. I'm willing to give you an antidote because I need your help. But likewise, if you want to detoxify, you must join forces with me. Magnus, you have no choice. If you don't join forces with me, I guarantee you won't get an antidote before the poison takes effect."
Magnus was silent for a few seconds, his eyes deepening.
Sophie spoke again, "Mr. Blackwood, you've got a week at most before the poison kicks in. Joining forces with me to save your life sounds like a good deal. But if you don't value your life, then forget it."
"Did you poison Christopher?"
"Yes, the Shadow Syndicate is watching me. I had no choice but to poison him. Every move I make is monitored. I'm calling you because I want to take a gamble," Sophie replied.
If she didn't gamble, she would die anyway.
Pulling a strong ally into her camp might give her a chance to fight against the Shadow Syndicate and survive, escaping the clutches of evil.
Magnus's eyes narrowed, "Why should I trust a pawn from the enemy's camp?"
Sophie laughed mockingly, "Mr. Blackwood, as you said, to the Shadow Syndicate, I'm just a pawn that can be sacrificed at any time. But what if I want to escape the game? The Shadow Syndicate plays the black pieces, and Mr. Blackwood plays the white pieces. After living in darkness for too long, I also want to see the sunlight outside. It has only one chance of survival by defecting to the white pieces."
