Chapter 260 Sweetie, Don't Cry Anymore
In the dimly lit room, the light was hazy, their breaths a bit uneven, and every sense seemed heightened.
Juniper was perched on his lap, her back to the big screen, heart pounding. "You think there's surveillance here?"
"Nah, even if there was, it's off now," he replied.
This private cinema was Robert's idea. He had thrown some cash into it, making him an original shareholder. Robert loved sinking money into random stuff like bars, niche cinemas, corner coffee shops, and board game cafes. Whether they made a profit or not was secondary; it was all about the fun.
Juniper was doubtful. "Really?"
Magnus pressed his forehead to hers, his dark eyes smoldering as he looked at her with a slight smile. "I don't have an exhibitionist kink."
That put Juniper at ease.
But still, this was a public place, so they couldn't get too carried away.
"But I haven't finished the movie, and it's probably pretty dirty here."
He tapped her nose, chuckling. "Juniper, what's going through that head of yours?"
Juniper was taken aback.
Magnus grinned. "I just want a kiss. Or were you hoping for something more?"
Juniper's mind screamed no, absolutely not, she didn't want that!
Her face turned bright red, even her ears were burning.
Clearly, he was messing with her, but she thought he wanted sex.
Magnus looked into her eyes, his usually stern and sharp features softened with a hint of a tender smile.
The light from the big screen flickered on his face, his gaze deep and gentle, so different from his usual self.
In the dim light, she couldn't see the fleeting pain and regret beneath his tenderness, and she couldn't help but kiss him.
Just one kiss.
The sweetness of the popcorn mingled with their passionate kiss.
They kissed for a long time, lingering and tender.
Juniper slowly opened her eyes, asking uncertainly, "Magnus, does this mean we're back together?"
Were we together now?
He looked at her eyes, gradually misty from the kiss, and clearly responded, "Yes."
"Magnus, I think I'm getting a bit greedy. I want a future with you, what should I do?"
Her voice was soft and gentle, her expression clear yet immersed.
She didn't really yearn for marriage.
Having seen Alexander and Lyra's messed-up marriage since childhood, how could she long for marriage?
Marriage, for anyone, had always been a shackle. No matter how much it was glorified, the institution of marriage went against human nature and instincts.
She wasn't looking forward to marriage, nor did she suddenly want to get married.
Magnus was the reason she was willing to believe in forever, to try for a love that would last until the end of time.
It wasn't marriage she looked forward to, but the irresistible presence of Magnus, the man she had been infatuated with for seven years.
On the big screen, the movie was reaching its climax.
"I love you, you have to come back, come back to me."
"I must go back, I promised her."
"With the photos, our new home."
"Dear Cecilia, I will come back, find you, love you, marry you, and live with my head held high."
"I love you, I will always wait for you, wait for you to come back," said the characters in the movie.
The kiss, during the movie's climax, gradually got out of control.
In the dim light, Juniper cupped his face. "Magnus, you have to keep our promise, bring Jenny and me back."
"I will come back. I have to come back, I promised her."
In a fluent British accent, Magnus's deep and alluring voice echoed the lines from the movie playing on the big screen behind her.
It was also his response to her.
Juniper was a bit taken aback, her eyes moist and red, but a faint smile crept onto her lips. "Weren't you just sleeping?"
"I just heard it," Magnus replied.
He hadn't meant to eavesdrop, but maybe because the movie's protagonist, Robbie, had a story that hit close to home, the lines stuck with him.
Juniper leaned against his chest, and they watched the movie's ending together.
The protagonist, Robbie, was the housekeeper's son, growing up with the heroine, Cecilia. They knew and loved each other. But later, due to Cecilia's cousin's false testimony, Robbie was wrongfully imprisoned for rape.
Years later, World War II broke out, and Robbie, still bearing his wrongful conviction, went to war. The brutal war ultimately separated Robbie and Cecilia by death; Robbie died on the battlefield, and shortly after, Cecilia drowned in a flood caused by a bombing.
When Robbie died, he was still clutching a stack of letters from Cecilia.
The story ended with a dream.
In the dream, Robbie and Cecilia returned to the seaside house where they had promised to spend their lives together. They ran hand in hand on the beach, kissing passionately amidst the crashing waves.
The movie ended.
Juniper was in tears, silently staring at the big screen in front of her, clutching a tissue.
The movie's protagonist, Robbie, had experiences somewhat similar to Magnus's, except Magnus hadn't experienced war and didn't die of sepsis.
But those three years of unjust suffering had indeed caused him pain and humiliation he shouldn't have endured.
And part of that was because of her.
She felt heartache for Robbie, and even more for Magnus.
The movie had struck a chord deep within her, Juniper's eyes were red-rimmed with tears.
Magnus pulled her into his arms, gently wiping her tears with his thumb, sighing helplessly. "Why watch such a tragedy? When we go out later, people will think I did something terrible to you."
Juniper looked up, frowning at him, her voice choked with sobs. "Do you think we'll end up like them?"
Magnus was stunned for a few seconds.
Her gaze was so sorrowful that Magnus didn't dare to say anything negative.
His heart ached as if it were being crushed.
He lowered his head and kissed her forehead, avoiding her eyes, looking at the darkness behind her, and told another lie, "No, I'm not Robbie, and you're not Cecilia."
Juniper wrapped her arms around his neck, sniffing. "Will we have a future?"
"Yes."
Magnus's thin lips pressed against her forehead, and he responded softly, but there was no light in his eyes.
But in his arms, Juniper cried and laughed foolishly.
Because Magnus had made a promise, he would definitely keep it; he despised lying the most.
But the impact of the movie was too strong. Juniper lay in his arms, unable to stop her tears for a long time.
Everyone had unresolved feelings in their hearts.
Robbie and Cecilia were a complete regret, they longed to be together but they never truly were.
Having experienced it, Juniper could almost empathize.
But Magnus couldn't bear to see Juniper cry, so he pulled her into his arms, lowered his head, and patiently coaxed her in a low voice, "Why are you still crying? Do you want some coffee?"
Juniper continued to cry.
"Or do you want to buy a bag?"
He remembered Robert saying that when Ophelia was sad, just mentioning buying a bag would make her instantly happy.
But Juniper had no interest in bags.
Magnus sighed almost inaudibly, holding her, his large hand gently stroking her long hair, his hoarse voice incredibly tender. "Sweetheart, don't cry anymore. If you keep crying, people will really think I bullied you."
