Chapter 304 The Sound of Longing, Deafening
These words weighed heavily on Michael's chest, making it hard for him to breathe.
He slowly let go of Sinclair, sat on the edge of the sofa, and hung his head low.
They remained silent for a long time.
He took a deep breath and suddenly asked, "You still haven't told me why you transferred a hundred thousand dollars to me."
Sinclair pursed her lips and said, "Do you remember when you represented the company to sponsor a batch of scholarships at Imperial Capital University?"
Michael was visibly taken aback. During those years, he often went to schools to give lectures and represented the company to sponsor college students. So such things were quite routine for him, and he didn't have any special impression.
Sinclair smiled, "It's okay if you don't remember. I was one of the students you sponsored."
Of course, this was nothing special to Michael. He had sponsored countless students.
But to the sponsored, he was special.
Michael suddenly realized. "So, you knew me from back then?"
She nodded and continued, "Later, in my senior year, just before my internship, my dad was diagnosed with stomach cancer and needed surgery. We were short a hundred thousand dollars. My mom and I were frantic, unsure where to get the money. Out of nowhere, I mustered the courage to call you. I didn't expect you to lend me the money so readily. Although a hundred thousand dollars might be nothing to you, it was life-saving money for me at the time."
Michael's gaze darkened. "So, when you later applied to my company, it was because..."
Sinclair interrupted him, "I majored in Business English in college. I originally wanted to become a simultaneous interpreter, but when I saw your company needed a receptionist on the job application software, I thought I could work at your company while studying for my certification."
She paused and then said, "Honestly, I didn't think much at the time. I just wanted to be a little closer to the person I admired. It didn't matter if I didn't get the job. But as luck would have it, I got the job. Not only that, but the boss would also invite me to dinner when he saw me eating instant noodles."
At this point, she laughed mockingly, "This hundred thousand dollars is the money you lent me back then. Although you didn't ask me to repay it, now that I've returned it, we're even. I didn't intend to bring up the past, but I couldn't feel at ease if I didn't repay the money. My mom kept urging me to return the money. She doesn't it was you who helped us. Now that it's finally repaid, I have no reason to entangle with you anymore."
That night, it snowed heavily outside the window.
Michael stood downstairs at Sinclair's apartment, drenched in snow all night.
By dawn, he called Luke, instructing, "Have the lawyer come to my office tomorrow morning to draft two divorce agreements."
Sinclair would likely never be able to have children.
Michael had originally wanted to spend the rest of his life making it up to her, but she didn't want him anymore. He could only compensate her with cars, houses, and money.
He wanted to give her more, like a warm home and emotional care, but she didn't want any of it.
He trudged through the snow for a long time, as if punishing himself, his legs feeling as heavy as lead. His feet and pant legs were soaked, and they were so cold that he lost all feeling in them.
With red eyes, he slowly turned back to look. None of the warm, yellow lights were left on for him.
Patricia was dead. Sinclair had also left him. He had no home.
The snow fell heavier and heavier. He wished this snow could bury him too.
At this moment, he felt abandoned by the whole world. The heavy snow quickly covered the traces of his journey. The road he came from had become blurred. There was no way back.
In Solara, it was also snowing on a winter night. Everything outside was blanketed in snow.
After safely sending Juniper and Jenny here, Ronald had returned to Southern City yesterday.
Juniper took Jenny to a nearby mall, picked out a pair of platinum couple rings at a counter, and then returned to the villa.
After dinner, Jenny followed her private tutor for a while, then went upstairs with her tablet to watch cartoons.
Juniper, wrapped in a cream-colored woolen shawl with tassels, saw the private tutor off. But as she opened the door, she saw Magnus standing in the yard.
He was wearing a black, well-fitted coat, standing tall and conspicuous in the snow.
Juniper stood in disbelief.
Just as she thought she was hallucinating, Magnus smiled faintly and opened his arms to her. "Juniper."
The sound was clear and close.
Juniper couldn't help but scream, rushing out in her slippers. When she reached him, she almost tripped, and Magnus caught her. She threw herself into his arms.
The force made him stagger back a step, barely catching her.
He chuckled, raised his hand, and tapped her nose. "Why are you running? You almost fell."
Juniper didn't care about that, wrapping her arms around his neck, her eyes full of surprise. "Why did you suddenly come? Didn't you say you were too busy to visit us? Or am I dreaming?"
She asked several questions in a row, her delicate face brimming with joy.
Magnus, overwhelmed, wrapped his arms around her waist and held her tightly, looking deeply into her eyes. "You asked me so many questions at once; which one should I answer first?"
Juniper was completely immersed in happiness, excitedly asking him, "Why didn't you tell me in advance that you were coming? When did you arrive?"
He leaned down slightly, his forehead touching hers, his voice low and affectionate. "I just arrived, and you rushed out."
Looking at his handsome face, Juniper thought of his journey from Imperial Capital to Solara, and her heart swelled with emotion.
She hung her arms around his neck, leaned into his embrace, and kissed his lips.
Magnus... she loved him so much.
Even though they had been apart for less than a week, the longing felt like a flood, unstoppable once it started.
If longing had a sound, it would be deafening now.
Their lips and tongues intertwined in a deep kiss.
Juniper, holding his neck, pulled his face down, and they embraced, kissing in the yard for a very long time.
Magnus held Juniper close until their breaths completely mingled and she was slightly out of breath, then he finally loosened his hold on her.
Her eyes were misty from the kiss, looking both alluring and tender. When she looked into his eyes, they seemed to be filled with stars, sparkling brightly.
Magnus gently caressed her warm face with his calloused fingers, his gaze intense, and smiled, "Why are you so proactive now?"
Juniper blushed. "Don't you like me being proactive?"
Magnus said gently, "I do."
Juniper's lips curled up. "I think my slippers are filled with snow."
Magnus bent down, scooped her up in his arms, and strode towards the house.
