Chapter 212: He Arrived in Southern City
After Sophie sent Christopher back to his room, she headed to hers.
Her phone buzzed with a call from some random number.
"Hey, Sir," Sophie answered.
The other person used a voice changer, sounding extremely hoarse, "How's it going?"
"Pretty smooth."
"It's been a month already. When are the Christopher going to announce that you are his biological daughter?"
Sophie frowned a bit. "I haven't fully won over Christopher yet, Sir. I need a bit more time."
The guy on the phone snapped, "So, your 'pretty smooth' means no progress, huh?"
"Christopher's really into his stepdaughter Juniper. I have returned to the Abbotts, but he still calls Juniper Quinn."
"If Juniper's messing things up, get rid of her," the man ordered.
"Got it, Sir," Sophie replied.
The man sounded pissed. "Get into Windsor Group ASAP and get involved in their core stuff. I'm not waiting around for you to slowly gain the Abbotts' trust."
"And Ronald..." The guy's voice turned cold and mean. "If he's a problem, take him out too!"
"Yes."
"Oh, and watch that birthmark on your back. You just got in with the Abbotts; they're gonna be suspicious." The man added.
"I get it." Sophie hung up and deleted the call log.
She stripped down and checked out the blue birthmark on her back in the mirror. The bruise was still there.
In a few days, if it faded, she would simply find a way to bump into something again.
At the Banyan Tree Hotel in the Imperial Capital, a shadowy figure slipped in through the window.
"Sir, Juniper's probably Christopher's real daughter. What should we do?" a man asked.
" Kill her," another one said.
Right then, there was a knock on the door.
The person inside tensed up. "Get out, now."
"Yes." The shadowy figure silently climbed back out the window.
In seconds, the suite looked normal again.
Outside the door, Karen was already kicking the door, shouting, "K! Open up!"
K opened the door, frowning. "Ms. Abbott, are you a dog? Why are you barking?"
"You were sneaking around in there. What shady stuff were you up to?" Karen stormed in.
K stood at the door, smirking, "I was just about to find a woman to satisfy my desires. If you keep yelling like that, you might ruin everything if I were truly occupied."
Karen's mouth twitched, and she glanced at his crotch. "Who knows if you have erectile dysfunction and are just taking it out on me."
K smirked, "Wanna check if I have any such problems?"
She cursed, "Get lost! If you try anything with me, I'll rip your kidney out!"
K's eyes flashed with disdain, "Ms. Abbott, I'm shaking."
"You better be!" Karen said, "Why are you here in my room so late? Need something?"
Karen finally remembered why she was there. "The day Juniper left, I told you to send someone to the airport to grab her. Why didn't you?"
K said, "Did you forget whose turf the Imperial Capital is? Ms. Abbott, this is the Imperial Capital, not Southern City. The Abbotts don't run things here. If I kidnap Juniper and Magnus comes after me, wouldn't you feel bad? I've been with you for so long, if not for merit, at least for hard work, right?"
"Stop sucking up! I told you to grab Juniper to help Magnus keep her here. If he's reasonable, he won't blame us. Now, Juniper's already working at Windsor Group. It's gonna be tough to get her out!" Karen shouted.
"The Windsor Group is insignificant. Do you really care that much about such a trivial asset?" K smirked.
How dare anyone say Windsor Group insignificant?
Karen felt like she'd heard the biggest joke ever.
She raised an eyebrow. "I know your broke ass can't even imagine it. When I take over Windsor Group, stick with me, and I'll treat you right. You're good at getting stuff done. Oh, and we're heading back to Southern City the day after tomorrow."
"So soon? We done here in Imperial Capital?" K asked.
"That's not your concern. Wherever I go, you follow. Why so many questions?"
"Alright, Ms. Abbott."
But before heading back to Southern City, K had a couple of loose ends to tie up.
If Juniper bit the dust, he wondered if Christopher would be crushed.
Juniper was about to die, but Christopher didn't know she was his own daughter yet.
The next day, at 6 PM, Ronald switched into a semi-formal suit and opened the car door for her. "The concert starts at 8 PM and ends at 10 PM. Let's grab dinner first, or we'll be starving after two hours."
"Sure, let's just grab something," Juniper replied.
Once Juniper got in the car, Ronald asked, "What do you wanna eat?"
"Mexican food."
"Mexican food?"
To Ronald, this was their first real date. Even if it wasn't romantic, he took it seriously.
Going for Mexican food on a first date might feel a bit too casual.
Juniper thought he wasn't into Mexican food and said, "Barbecue's fine too."
Ronald said, "Alright, whatever you like."
They headed to a mall near the theater.
When Juniper said to grab something, she meant it. She took Ronald to a popular barbecue joint.
The place was packed, and they had to wait in line.
Ronald, all dressed up in a suit, looked a bit out of place in the laid-back vibe.
Juniper noticed and felt a bit awkward, "Where do you usually eat? Fancy places?"
"Yeah," he replied. Then, worried she might be upset, he added, "But places like this probably have great food. It's my first time at a barbecue spot. Do you like barbecue a lot?"
"Not bad, I used to eat it quite often," Juniper said.
She loved barbecue and Mexican food. During her whirlwind romance with Magnus, they'd go on dates, watch movies, drink coffee, eat Mexican food, have barbecue, sit on massage chairs in the mall, and waste away a lazy afternoon.
As long as they were together, even the most boring stuff was fun.
Of course, Magnus preferred spending weekends in bed with her, never getting tired of it.
They sat on a bench outside the barbecue joint, waiting for their turn to be called.
Ronald peeked inside and asked, "Do you grill the food yourself here, or do the waiters do it?"
"I usually grill it myself. When it's busy, the waiters might be too swamped."
Back then, Magnus did the grilling, and she just ate.
Ronald nodded. "I'll grill for you later, but it's my first time, so I might suck at it."
"I'll do it. It's pretty simple." She glanced around, estimating that their turn would come up soon.
She stood up and said, "Ronald, I'm heading to the restroom."
"Want me to go with you?"
"No need."
Juniper, carrying her bag, glanced toward the restroom, which was on the other side of the floor.
As she walked, she felt like someone was tailing her.
But when she turned around, there were only hurried passersby.
It was so weird; was she just being paranoid?
After coming out of the restroom, Juniper still felt like someone was following her.
She turned around again but saw nothing.
In a blind spot around the corner, a tall figure stood.
The guy wore a black baseball cap and mask, dressed in casual dark clothes, trying to stay low-key. But his tall, lean frame made him stand out, catching eyes on the street.
He followed Juniper from a distance.
When Juniper turned around, he ducked out of sight.
He watched as Juniper walked back to Ronald and entered the barbecue joint with him.
