Chapter 225 Blood Sacrifice Juniper
"That's your dad who kicked the bucket! Juniper, how could you be so heartless? Your father just died, and you're still spouting off like that?" Isolde fumed.
"So what? And why would I say such nasty stuff? When you join Alexander in the afterlife, ask him why he pushed his own daughter to this point," Juniper shot back with a sneer.
"Are you cursing me?"
Juniper's voice was icy and robotic, "Isn't it obvious? Yeah, I'm cursing you."
Before Isolde could clap back, Juniper had already hung up!
Isolde tried to call again, but Juniper had already blocked her number.
On the other end, Isolde stared at the dead phone, eyes wide with shock.
"How dare she talk to me like that? Alexander, she was so rude." Isolde yelled at Alexander.
Alexander frowned, his face darkening, "She doesn't plan to come back after hearing about my death?"
"That won't fly! Juniper doesn't see you as her dad anymore! She's been brainwashed by Magnus, and now she even talks back to her elders!"
Listening to Isolde's rant, a cold glint flashed in Alexander's eyes, "Since she disregards our relationship, she can't blame me for being ruthless!"
"But if she doesn't come back, how can we squeeze money out of her?" Isolde asked.
Alexander said sternly, "Isn't her daughter still in the Imperial Capital?"
"Right, Juniper cares a lot about her kid. If we nab her daughter, things will get easier! But I had someone look into it, and her daughter is with Magnus, so it might be tough to get to her."
Alexander snorted coldly, mocking, "It might be hard to deal with Magnus with personal power now, but I haven't been sitting idle all these years. If I had joined the Shadow Syndicate back then, could Magnus have taken me down? Juniper is so naive, thinking she sent me to prison just by risking everything to testify. She was so obedient as a kid, but she changed completely after meeting Magnus!"
Isolde snapped, "It's all your fault! If you had let me discipline her properly back then, would she be so arrogant now? Forget about that brat, you mentioned the Shadow Syndicate, do we still have a shot at joining them now that we lost ecerything?"
A hint of pride flashed in Alexander's eyes, "I was once the governor of X City. I've got something on a lot of people. They won't give up on recruiting me. I got out this time thanks to the Shadow Syndicate's help. I contacted them yesterday, and there's a requirement to join them."
"Is it about money? Alexander, we don't have any cash right now!" Isolde was anxious.
Alexander gave her a disdainful look, "Stupid! Do you think the Shadow Syndicate is short of your little money?"
Isolde complained, "How would I know anything about the Shadow Syndicate! Are they really so powerful that they can help us immigrate to Celestia?"
Alexander replied, "The Shadow Syndicate has already prepped a villa, car, and driver for us in Celestia. As long as we complete their specified tasks, they'll take us to Celestia to live the good life."
Upon hearing this, Isolde's eyes lit up, "What tasks?"
"Over the years, the Shadow Syndicate has infiltrated every corner of the country, deeply entrenched. They want to monopolize all energy and assets and establish a new social order. So they have recruited many top figures from various fields, including business and politics. They have their eyes on the resources controlled by Magnus. As far as I know, the Shadow Syndicate approached Magnus two years ago, but he refused to join them," Alexander explained.
"They want you to recruit Magnus? But we're enemies with Magnus, how can we team up with him?"
"Magnus already turned them down, but the Shadow Syndicate's motto is 'comply or die.' Knowing our beef with Magnus, they want us to help take him out."
Isolde's eyes lit up with hatred, "With the Shadow Syndicate's backing, we have to kill Magnus this time!"
Alexander's face darkened with worry. "They suggested using Juniper to bait Magnus, but weirdly, they picked Juniper as the blood sacrifice target."
"Blood sacrifice?"
"It's the Shadow Syndicate's initiation ritual. Every new member has to choose a target for the blood sacrifice, preferably a relative," Alexander explained.
Even Isolde, usually so ruthless, shuddered at the thought. "The Shadow Syndicate is so evil. Isn't it dangerous for us to join them?"
"The Shadow Syndicate's been around for over a hundred years. Their leaders worship Satan and do the most sinister stuff imaginable. Once you're in, there's no backing out. If you don't follow orders, you die a violent death. That's why I hesitated before. Magnus was brave enough to refuse them outright. If I hadn't used some X City secrets to curry favor with the Shadow Syndicate, they'd have killed me long ago. Wealth and power always come with risks. But now, being forced to this point, I can only join them and take a gamble," Alexander said.
Upon hearing the news of Alexander's death, Juniper felt a mix of emotions.
After all, he was her biological father. Despite his many crimes, hearing about his sudden death didn't bring her any joy.
She wasn't exactly sad, nor was she happy. It felt like an overcast sky hanging over her, neither raining nor clearing up, just oppressively grey.
After leaving the Imperial Capital and distancing herself from those unbearable past events, Juniper hadn't had insomnia for a while.
Recently, her emotions had been quite stable, and she hadn't taken much paroxetine.
But tonight, after hearing about Alexander's death, she had insomnia again.
It was only when the first light of dawn touched the sky that she finally fell asleep.
When she woke up again, Jenny gave her a video call.
Juniper sat up, rubbed her eyes, and answered.
"Mom, did you just wake up? It's already noon! Have you become a lazy bug too?"
Looking at the cute little face in the video, Juniper's mood instantly improved, and she smiled, "I didn't sleep well last night. Did you call because you missed me?"
"Yes!"
Jenny nodded firmly, but the next second, she took out an English test paper.
Juniper clearly saw the grade on top: a B.
"Is this the midterm exam?" Juniper asked.
"Yes! There's going to be a parent-teacher meeting! But I haven't told Dad yet. Mom, can you come back for the meeting?"
Juniper was puzzled, "I can, but why not tell Dad? Your grades are great."
Jenny blinked her big eyes, looking at her innocently, "Mom, I really want to get an A on the test."
"Yes, I see, but you still are great."
"Mom, I'm the only one in my class who got a B," Jenny said sadly.
"Are you the first?"
Jenny honestly said, "Mom, I'm the first, but from the bottom."
She was first in math, but last in English.
Juniper didn't know what to say for a moment.
