Chapter 279 I Won't Marry Anyone Else
In the middle of everyone's weird stares, Magnus, the new guy, boldly followed Juniper upstairs.
Sophie was lounging on the living room couch, watching them go with a slight frown. "Ronald, Juniper's an outsider too. With Dad in a coma, things are gonna get messy. Is it really smart to have so many random people around?"
If they found out Juniper was actually Christopher's real daughter, this whole plan would fall apart.
Ronald shot back coldly, "If Juniper's an outsider, then so am I. Just like her, I'm just an adopted kid of Christopher."
Sophie bit her lip, speechless.
Karen, sitting nearby, got a message on her phone.
She glanced at it, squinted, and read it out loud, "Windsor Group might be inherited by Christopher's only biological daughter, who will own 35% of the shares and become the largest shareholder and actual controller of the group?"
Karen looked at Sophie with a mocking smile. "Care to explain what's going on?"
Sophie didn't flinch, "That news is probably just speculation from shareholders and netizens."
"Speculation that becomes a hot topic this fast? Sophie, do you think I'm dumb? Are you that desperate to get Dad's shares? So, you leaked the news about Dad's coma, didn't you?" Karen pressed.
Sophie shot back, "So what if I did? I'm Dad's only biological daughter. With him in a coma, the best move is to push me forward to stabilize the shareholders and the group. You and Ronald have helped, sure, but you're just adopted. You have no right to inherit!"
Karen cut her off with a cold laugh, "Whether you're Christopher's biological daughter is still up for debate!"
"Can a paternity test be faked?"
"Who knows? Maybe you've got spies in every genetic testing lab in Southern City, and the info could be swapped anytime," Karen sneered.
"Karen, what are you implying? You think I'm fake because you're scared that if Dad finds his real daughter, you, as an adopted daughter, won't get anything?" Sophie challenged.
Karen stood up, facing Sophie head-on. "Dad's shares can go to whoever he wants, but the projects I manage at Windsor Group were built by me, especially the resort hotel project. No matter who takes over, they can't just sit back and enjoy the fruits of my labor."
Sophie retorted, "My dad's usually generous and doesn't meddle much in the projects you manage. Do you really think those projects are yours? Karen, as an adopted daughter, being able to work at Windsor Group and getting some shares is already a favor from my dad. Now you're opposing me, how is that not ungrateful?"
Karen laughed mockingly. "Yes. Some people who aren't even adopted daughters, trying to pass off fake as real? However, fake will eventually be exposed. What is false cannot be made true, and what is true cannot be faked."
Sophie, furious, raised her hand to slap her, but Karen caught her wrist.
"Getting mad out of shame? I didn't say you were fake. If you're real, why are you so anxious?" Karen leaned in close, whispering so only they could hear, "That birthmark on your back that looks so real, I happened to see it on Juniper's back too. Who between you two is fake and who is real, I'm really looking forward to finding out."
Sophie stared at her, completely stunned.
This was clearly a threat, forcing her to pick a side.
If she went against Karen, she might get attacked.
But Karen, already cool and collected, let go of her wrist and said to Ronald, "It's late, I'm heading home to sleep. Can't wait for tomorrow's shareholders' meeting."
Sophie watched Karen walk away, a hint of murderous intent in her eyes.
Karen couldn't be kept around.
Upstairs, in the guest room, Juniper closed the door and looked at Magnus calmly. "Given the current mess with the Abbotts, it might be tough for me to stay here with Jenny. I don't want to trouble Ronald. And I'm not going back to Imperial Capital to bother you either, but you need to help me and Jenny find a place to stay temporarily in Southern City."
Magnus thought for a few seconds and suddenly asked, "Do you want to go to Solara?"
Before, sending her to Southern City seemed safe because they thought the Shadow Syndicate hadn't targeted the Abbotts yet. But Christopher's coma was likely tied to the Shadow Syndicate.
The Abbotts weren't safe anymore, and there might even be spies from the Shadow Syndicate in this house.
Sending Juniper and Jenny to Solara was the safest bet for now.
She hesitated and looked at him. "Is it just me and Jenny going to Solara, or are you coming with us?"
Before, in the cinema, while watching the movie, he had promised her that once everything was settled, he would take her and Jenny to settle in Solara.
Magnus was silent for a long time, his Adam's apple bobbing. "I've arranged for people over there to receive you. You don't need to worry about living arrangements."
The meaning was clear.
Juniper smiled wryly. "If you're not going, what do you mean? Are you sending me and Jenny to Solara so you can marry Mary? Or is the crisis SY is facing this time requiring you to marry someone else?"
Marriage?
If it were that simple, it would be easy to handle.
Magnus looked at her, his heart softening. He wrapped his large hand around the back of her neck, pulling her into his arms, his chin resting on the top of her head. "I won't marry anyone else, Juniper."
Well, he wouldn't marry anyone else, nor would he marry her.
So, how was she any different from others?
Juniper suddenly wanted to be willful for once. "I don't want to go to Solara. I can stay in Southern City, but Solara is just too far."
She was afraid that once she went, she wouldn't be able to come back.
Magnus sighed, gently pressing his forehead against hers, "Do you know why Christopher is in a coma?"
Juniper naturally didn't know.
"It was probably the Shadow Syndicate. Christopher was likely poisoned, so Southern City isn't safe anymore. Juniper, you and Jenny are the most important to me... the ones I can't afford to lose. Listen to me, go to Solara for a while. When things settle down, I'll bring you back."
Juniper's eyes showed clear astonishment, but soon she shook her head and said, "But you don't keep your promises, Magnus. Recently, you've lied too much. I can't trust you anymore."
He smiled bitterly, his eyes indulgent and doting. "It's just that I haven't fulfilled them yet. That's not lying, Juniper."
Juniper didn't want to hear any more. She grabbed his shirt at the waist with both hands and looked up. "Since the Shadow Syndicate poisoned Christopher, what about you? Will they come after you too?"
