Chapter 329 Be More Polite
The black luxury car was on its way back to the hotel.
Paul glanced in the rearview mirror and saw Magnus leaning back in the rear seat, having taken off his glasses, eyes closed, with a heavy expression on his face.
He reached into his coat pocket for a pack of cigarettes but found nothing.
He had come to Southern City in such a hurry that he hadn't brought his cigarettes or lighter.
Hearing Magnus sigh softly from the back seat, Paul suggested, "There's a store up ahead. How about we stop, and I'll get you a pack of cigarettes?"
Magnus responded with a simple "Okay."
After a while, the black luxury car pulled over to the curb.
Paul went into the store to buy cigarettes.
Magnus straightened up in the back seat, put on his glasses, and slowly opened his eyes.
The winter nights in Southern City were damper and colder than those in Imperial Capital.
He opened the window, letting in a bit of the damp, cold wind, which blew away some of his irritability.
Not far away, under a streetlamp.
A couple was arguing.
They were arguing fiercely, shouting at the top of their lungs.
He and Juniper would probably never have such heated arguments in their lifetime.
For some reason, a rare curiosity arose in him, and he lowered the car window halfway.
The girl said, "My dad was very unhappy with you today! It was your first time visiting my home, and you didn't bring any gifts. He thinks you don't value me or our family!"
The boy said, "How do I not value you? I didn't know about the customs here in Southern City. We're not even married yet, why so many rules?"
The girl said, "If you didn't know, couldn't you ask? At the very least, you should have brought some gifts. Now my dad doesn't agree with our marriage!"
The boy, exasperated, said, "Fine, if you want to break up, just say so!"
The girl, eyes red, bit her lip and angrily said, "What do you mean? Do you want to break up?"
"Isn't it you who wants to break up? Fine, let's break up! Don't make excuses, saying I didn't bring gifts the first time I visited. The truth is, your dad just doesn't want you to marry an outsider!"
The girl, wiping her tears, said, "My dad had already accepted that I would marry far away. I finally convinced him, and now you are having this attitude!"
"Yes, girls from Southern City are particularly precious and don't want to marry far away! I won't marry you! Marry whoever you want!"
After saying these harsh words, the boy turned and walked away without looking back.
The girl stood there, staring at the boy's back.
She waited for a long time.
The boy didn't turn back.
The girl lowered her head slightly and turned to leave as well.
They parted ways.
The sound of their argument faded into silence.
Paul returned with the cigarettes.
Seeing Magnus staring into the distance, he asked, "Mr. Blackwood, what are you looking at?"
Magnus closed the car window, "I remember your wife is also from Southern City?"
Paul handed over the cigarettes and lighter, "Yes, Mr. Blackwood, why do you ask?"
Magnus frowned, "Do the elders in Southern City dislike sons-in-law from other places?"
Paul was taken aback and awkwardly said, "Well... yes, they are known for doting on their daughters, especially those only daughters from well-off families, who are the apple of their parents' eyes."
Paul explained, "The elders here would rather marry their daughters to local men with no prospects than have them marry far away. When I first came to Southern City to meet my wife's father, he didn't give me a warm welcome. I can't remember how many heart-to-heart talks we had before he agreed to let Amanda marry me and move to Imperial Capital..."
As he spoke, Paul noticed that Magnus's expression was becoming more and more serious.
Magnus, looking uncomfortable, asked, "Were you also kicked out the first time you met her father?"
"No, I did better than you..." Paul bit his tongue and swallowed his words.
"Go ahead, or I'll dock your bonus."
Paul cleared his throat, "Then I'll be honest?"
"If you can pinpoint the problem, I'll double your bonus."
Magnus's voice from the back seat was calm, revealing no emotion, but his words made Paul's eyes light up.
Paul quickly pointed out, "Mr. Blackwood, you're my boss, my superior. It's normal for you to speak to me in a commanding tone. But who is Mr. Abbott? He's Ms. Beaumont's father, your future father-in-law."
Magnus frowned, his expression turning cold, "Was my attitude really that problematic tonight?"
Seeing that there was still hope for this man, Paul offered more advice, "You told Mr. Abbott tonight that you are Ms. Beaumont's husband. What father wouldn't be angry hearing that? You and Ms. Beaumont aren't even married yet, and you want to take away his precious daughter?"
"I... didn't mean to take Juniper away."
He had come to Southern City this time to be with Juniper openly and honorably.
Previously, he hadn't made their relationship public, causing Juniper to be caught in a "mistress" scandal, which was his oversight.
Paul pursed his lips, somewhat speechless, "But your tone made it sound like: Ms. Beaumont belongs to you, and there's nothing wrong with taking your own person. They should be sensible and hand her over."
Magnus was stunned, "Was my tone that bad?"
Since the conversation had reached this point, Paul decided to lay it all out, "Anyway, I wouldn't dare speak to my father-in-law like that. If I had gone empty-handed and acted so arrogantly, he would have chased me out with a broom."
Christopher's displeasure was understandable.
After all, he had just recognized his precious daughter, and now a man suddenly appeared, wanting to take her far away to Imperial Capital. Whose father would be happy about that?
Magnus clenched his fingers, his brow twitching.
Paul advised, "Mr. Blackwood, when you're facing Mr. Abbott, you need to tone down that authoritative aura. Otherwise, people might think you're there to steal business from the Abbotts in the middle of the night! You're there to marry his daughter, to take away his precious child, so you need to have a better attitude. However, the fact that Mr. Abbott still had the butler serve you tea means there's still hope."
Magnus in the back seat was silent for a long time, finally restraining his sharp demeanor.
He asked, "How did you go to Amanda's house the first time?"
"My father-in-law likes to collect fine wines, so I bought two bottles of expensive wine. I got a set of high-end skincare products for my mother-in-law. Her younger sister was still in college and needed a new computer, so I bought a high-end laptop as a meeting gift. As long as you make them happy, they'll naturally accept you. After all, if you're so good to her family, you'll definitely be even better to the girl herself. The most important thing is to let the father know that you are absolutely sincere about his daughter."
After finishing, Paul added, "And in this kind of situation, you're essentially taking away their only daughter, so you need to be more polite."
