Chapter 220: Once We Meet, My Heart Will Waver
Jenny was yapping away on the video call, but Juniper's mind was already miles away.
Magnus was out of town, so why'd he lie and say he was in the Imperial Capital?
Juniper couldn't help but feel suspicious.
Jenny kept talking, but when she didn't get a response, she called out, "Mom!"
"Huh? What's up?"
Jenny pouted, "What's going on with you and Dad? I video-called him, and he was spaced out too. Now you're doing the same thing!"
Seeing Jenny's puffed-up cheeks, Juniper snapped back to reality and smiled, "Want some juice?"
Jenny's eyes lit up. "But I already brushed my teeth. Can I still have some?"
"How about I order delivery? When it gets here, you can ask Naomi to grab it from the door."
Jenny was thrilled. "Okay! While Dad's away, can you order me a cup every day?"
Jenny had a sweet tooth and loved juice. During her teething phase, she had to visit the dentist a lot because of cavities.
Magnus was always strict with the kids.
Jenny, being a little foodie, often got into trouble over snacks.
Now that Magnus wasn't home, she whispered to Juniper like a little hamster, "Mom, order me some juice, but don't tell Dad!"
If Dad was home, once she brushed her teeth, she wasn't allowed to eat anything else.
Even if Jenny was hungry, it wouldn't fly.
Magnus would sternly say, "If you ate your dinner properly, you wouldn't be hungry now. This is a bad habit that needs to change."
Juniper, seeing her cute little face, softened, "What else do you want? I'll order it for you."
"Thank you, Mom! I also want egg tarts and fried chicken!" Jenny was ecstatic.
"Okay. What other snacks do you want? I'll buy some online and have them delivered. You can hide them under your bed so your dad won't find them."
Jenny was over the moon. "Okay!"
Juniper and Magnus had totally different parenting styles.
Juniper probably felt she owed Jenny. During those six years, they were always on the move, constantly relocating. Back then, she didn't have much, and Jenny suffered a lot with her.
Now, she couldn't help but spoil her a bit more. It wasn't to oppose Magnus; she just felt that a little extra snacking wouldn't hurt.
She and Jenny were more like friends.
Jenny loved talking to her and loved to be affectionate with her.
However, Magnus was a strict father.
After ordering the juice, Juniper saw Jenny shaking her little head and grinning, "Mom, only the two of us know about this! It's our secret, don't tell Dad!"
Even through the video, Juniper wanted to pinch Jenny's little cheeks.
How could Magnus be so strict with such an adorable daughter?
Whenever Jenny cried, Juniper couldn't resist at all.
They chatted a bit more until the juice arrived. Jenny then hurriedly said, "Mom, the juice is here. I heard the delivery guy knocking. I'll ask Naomi to get it."
"Okay, go ahead."
After hanging up the video call, Juniper tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
She opened Magnus's Facebook and clicked on his profile to check out his page.
She found out that, even though he never shared much, he had posted an update over twenty days ago.
The post said: [Got twelve stitches.]
The pic below showed his injured arm.
She rarely checked Facebook, so she was just seeing this now.
She wondered if his arm had healed.
If he was really in Southern City, if he was the one who saved her...
Juniper couldn't resist and called Paul.
At the hospital, Paul saw the caller ID and his eyes flickered. "Mr. Blackwood, it's Ms. Beaumont. Should I answer?"
"Go ahead."
Paul picked up the phone and put it on speaker, "Hello, Ms. Beaumont."
Juniper asked, "Where's Magnus?"
Paul looked at Magnus, replying, "Mr. Blackwood is in Washington, D.C."
Juniper didn't know if she believed it, only coldly saying, "Is that so?"
"Yes, Ms. Beaumont, why are you still up so late?"
"Being lied to like a fool, of course, I can't sleep." Juniper was fuming.
Paul and Magnus were both stunned.
Jenny wouldn't lie.
So the one lying must be Magnus and Paul.
Just as Magnus was about to explain, Juniper had already hung up.
Paul was bewildered, "Mr. Blackwood, Ms. Beaumont seems to know you're in Southern City, and she's mad that we lied to her."
Juniper and Magnus had a similar trait: the angrier they were, the calmer they spoke.
Magnus leaned back, his handsome face tense, saying nothing.
Paul tentatively asked, "Mr. Blackwood, should I call back and explain to Ms. Beaumont?"
"Explain what?" Magnus said.
No matter how much they explained, the outcome between them wouldn't change.
Paul didn't dare speak further.
Magnus suddenly ordered, "Go handle my discharge paperwork."
Magnus's tone was cold and hard, "Are you deaf?"
"Mr. Blackwood, it's late, and your injury hasn't healed yet," Paul expressed his concern.
"Who says I can't discharge at night?"
Magnus was serious, and Paul didn't dare disobey.
He weakly reminded, "Mr. Blackwood, you should think it over. Ms. Beaumont might come to the hospital to find you."
What would Juniper do if she came to the hospital?
At most, she would pity him a bit, and then what? Would she break up with Ronald and go back to Imperial Capital with him?
Or would she be willing to marry him and spend the rest of their lives together?
If neither, he didn't want to face her directly again.
He struggled intensely to suppress his emotions and let her go, knowing that if they ever met again, he would inevitably fall back into the depths of his feelings for her.
"No more nonsense, or you'll lose your year-end bonus."
"Okay." Paul's mouth twitched.
Paul thought, 'After all, I won't be the one regretting it.'
If Juniper really married Ronald, it would be Magnus's own fault!
After hanging up, Juniper was even more sleepless.
The reason Magnus lied to her was that he didn't want to see her again.
Juniper hesitated, not about whether Magnus wanted to see her, but about what she would say if she went to find him.
Thank him for saving her?
If a stranger had saved her, she would typically cover their medical and nutrition expenses and give them some money to show gratitude.
But the one who saved her was Magnus.
Magnus didn't lack money and wouldn't take hers. If she gave him money, he would feel insulted.
So, if she went to the hospital, what could she give him?
