Chapter 47 Tangled Fate

When Juniper was ten, Lyra Callahan fell into a coma after an accidental fall caused by Alexander Beaumont.

During his relationship with Juniper, Magnus had accompanied her to visit Lyra a few times.

Back then, Lyra hadn’t yet awakened and she wasn't at this nursing home.

This was actually Lyra’s first encounter with Magnus.

She maneuvered her electric wheelchair closer, smiling, "It really is you. I thought I might have mistaken someone else for you."

She had seen his picture on Juniper's phone.

Magnus didn't reply.

Lyra went on to ask, "Are you here for your family?"

"Lyra, if there's nothing important, I should be going now." The implication was clear—he had nothing more to divulge.

Magnus's demeanor remained detached, without a hint of interest in reminiscing or small talk.

"I have something for you," she said.
Lyra Callahan quickly pulled a silver ring from her pocket and handed it to him.

The man's dark eyes flickered with surprise. "How did you have this ring?"

Lyra spoke truthfully, "Last time Juniper came to see me, she mentioned you got engaged and felt unworthy of wearing this ring. She threw it into the bushes. Worried she might regret it, I asked the groundskeeper to search the lawn for it, and they actually found it. Now, I'm returning it to its rightful owner."

Inside the black Maybach.

Magnus sat in the backseat, his fingers caressing the worn sterling silver ring engraved with M&J on the inside.

He had personally crafted these promise rings at a silversmith's shop on the day they committed to each other. The engraved initials were also his own handiwork.

Back then, he had never imagined their relationship would turn out like this.

Lyra's words still echoed in his ears—
"Six years ago, Juniper didn't betray you intentionally; it was Alexander Beaumont who used me to force her into giving false testimony. Blame me, Magnus, if you must. Juniper's feelings for you have always been sincere. If you seek vengeance, direct it at me. I beg you, don't take it out on Juniper. She's had a tough time these past years."

"This ring, lost by Juniper and now rightfully returned to you, might signal a chance for reconciliation, if you're willing."

Magnus looked down at the ring on his finger and let out a bitter laugh.

A second chance?
Unless he had never met Juniper, never loved her, only then could he perhaps not harbor any hatred.

Lyra said Juniper had suffered greatly these past few years.

But hadn't he as well?
Three years in prison had nearly cost him his life.

He couldn't trust Juniper anymore.

Joseph, who was driving, remembered something and asked, "Mr. Blackwood, your father is staying with you during his recovery. Should I find a nurse or a cook to help out?"

After contemplating for a moment, Magnus replied, "He was fond of Juniper. Let her come."

Joseph was taken aback. "Ms. Beaumont? What for?"

The man furrowed his brows, his tone icy, "For cooking."
Joseph snapped to attention, "Cooking... I'll let Miss Beaumont know in a bit."

But, it crossed his mind, isn't Mr. Blackwood the one with a soft spot for Juniper, using cooking at Royal View as a mere pretext to see her?

Was going to Royal View just about cooking?

He couldn't shake off his skepticism...

Magnus remembered something urgent, "How's the investigation I asked you to carry out?"

Joseph straightened up, "Found a witness from back in the day; lives out in the rural parts of S City. Should we pay a visit?"

"First thing tomorrow, we head to S City."

"Okay."

Years ago, his biological father, Benjamin Brown, and Alexander Beaumont were friends.

Together in X City, they had launched the Benjamin Corporation.

But just as the company hit its stride and profits soared, Benjamin Brown succumbed to a sudden heart attack in his office.

If it was death from overwork, there would have been nothing suspicious.

But suspicion lingered because Ava couldn't stop talking about it all these years.

She claimed that Alexander Beaumont was responsible for Benjamin Brown's death.

If his hunch was right, the woman Ava encountered today in the sanatorium, the old enemy's wife, must be Lyra Callahan.

After all those years, even driven mad, Ava had instantly recognized Alexander Beaumont's lawfully wedded wife, Lyra Callahan.

She must have learned something back then, something that struck her so hard that it shattered her sanity.

If Benjamin Brown had merely passed away from a heart attack, Ava wouldn't have ended up like this...

Holding the ring tightl, Magnus was lost in thought.

Joseph cast a worried glance at him in the rearview mirror and offered some solace, "Mr. Blackwood, maybe the truth is simpler than we expect, and all this is just conjecture. Besides, even if Alexander Beaumont was the culprit, I'm confident that given Miss Beaumont's character, she'd stand by you."

To Juniper, Alexander was nothing but a villain bound by blood.

If Alexander Beaumont truly was the murderer of Benjamin Brown...
It was as if fate conspired to keep him and Juniper on a collision course.

Alexander Beaumont had brought ruin to his household, while Juniper had nearly cost him his life.

His connection with the Beaumonts was nothing short of cursed.

But as the saying goes, every wrong has its culprit.

He would reclaim what was owed to him, down to the last cent!
