Chapter 41 Watch the Movie
"Juniper is carrying Magnus's baby? How could this... That tramp Juniper must have trapped Magnus! She must have!"
Upon learning the secret, Patricia was livid to the point of insanity.
She clutched her wine glass so tightly that it seemed as if she intended to shatter it.
No doubt Juniper planned to use the child to trap Magnus into reconciling with her or even force him into marriage by the child's birthright!
She was not going to let Juniper succeed... That bastard had no right to be in this world!
Juniper was utterly unworthy of bearing Magnus's child!
Hate gnawed at Patricia, almost causing her to grind her molars to dust.
Crash—
In a fit of rage, she swept all the cocktails from the table onto the floor.
She was furious.
After a hectic day, Juniper didn’t get off work until seven-thirty in the evening.
The summer nights in the Imperial Capital only began to darken around this time.
While on the bus, an ad on the mall's giant screen caught her eye.
It was an advertisement for Sycamore Group's sixth anniversary celebration.
June 6th? What a coincidence, that was her own birthday.
But she hadn't celebrated her birthday in years, not since Magnus was incarcerated. The day of her birthday brought back their last good memories, but it was also the day that cut her the deepest, coated with the sweetness of honey.
Her phone rang.
The caller ID showed Jennifer.
"Mom, are you home yet?"
"I’m on my way, sweetheart. I’ll be there soon. What would you like to eat? I'll pick something up on the way home."
"Godmother is here, too! Hurry back! We've got a surprise for you!"
Jennifer’s voice was mysteriously excited as she spoke before hanging up.
Juniper glanced at the disconnected call and smiled indulgently.
As Juniper opened the front door, she was greeted by darkness.
She fumbled for the light switch.
Suddenly, a sweet little voice began to sing, “Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you…”
Holding a birthday cake lit with candles, Jennifer walked slowly towards her, still singing.
"Mommy, Happy Birthday!"
Juniper looked down at the adorable face and felt an unexpected warmth welling up in her eyes.
It had been so long since anyone celebrated her birthday, the taste of birthday cake had faded from her memory.
Ophelia burst out with two bottles of champagne, "Happy birthday, Juniper!"
Juniper's tears wouldn't stop streaming down her face.
"What are you crying for? Birthdays are meant to be happy! Jennifer and I spent all afternoon getting ready. Make a wish already!"
Juniper lifted her head, holding back tears. She sniffled and laughed, "Suddenly, I don't know what to wish for."
Jennifer suggested, "Mom, make a wish for a handsome dad for me!"
Juniper and Ophelia both chuckled at Jennifer's comment.
Juniper clasped her hands together, closed her eyes, and silently made three wishes in her heart.
After making her wishes, they cut the cake.
The trio frolicked, smearing a bit of whipped cream on each other's faces.
Jennifer, licking a small fork covered in cream, leaned in and asked, "Mom, what did you wish for? Did you wish for a handsome boyfriend?"
"If I tell you, it won't come true," Juniper replied.
Ophelia teased, "Most kids fear getting a stepdad, but you, little miss, you're pushing your mom to find a hunk!"
Jennifer, unfazed, retorted, "A stepdad is bad only if he's a bad person. If I pick one, you can bet he'll be a great guy!"
"So you've been scouting for your mom?"
Juniper, wiping Jennifer's mouth clean with a napkin, said, "As long as I'm with Jennifer, I'm content. I'm not missing out by not dating."
Besides, she had lost her taste for romance.
It was hurtful and self-damaging.
Jennifer puckered her lips and planted a kiss on Juniper's cheek, saying earnestly, "Mom, I have another surprise for you, but it's not for tonight!"
"What kind of surprise?" Juniper's curiosity was piqued.
"It's a secret! But you're gonna love it!"
Juniper played along, "So when do I find out?"
Jennifer cocked her head, thinking, "Hmm... how about Saturday? That should work!"
Saturday, the man would probably be off work and free.
After they finished the cake, Ophelia headed home.
Jennifer bathed first and then settled into her bed with her iPad.
As soon as Juniper went to the bathroom for a shower, Jennifer grabbed her little watch and called someone saved in her contacts as "The Man."
The phone rang for a while and then he picked up.
"Hello, Jennifer?"
The little girl's face lit up with surprise, "Wow, I didn't even say who I was this time, how did you know it was me?"
Magnus chuckled with a hint of amusement on the other end of the line, "There aren't many who dare to call me in the middle of the night and disturb me, but you are one of them."
This wasn't the first time the little girl had texted or called him.
Strangely enough, Magnus had actually saved the little girl's number in his phone.
"So, what is it? Bad dreams again?"
At that moment, Magnus was in the middle of work, but he paused and focused solely on her upon receiving the call.
"Sir, are you free this Saturday?"
"Why do you ask?" The man lifted an eyebrow ever so slightly.
"I'd like to invite you to a movie!"
Magnus couldn't help but be torn between laughter and disbelief, "How old are you to be inviting men out to the movies? Little girl, aren't you afraid I might be a bad guy?"
Jennifer was fearless in her naivety, "Sir, you're so handsome, how could you possibly be a bad guy? My mom always said that beauty comes from within, and someone as good-looking as you has to be a great person!"
Magnus lightly scratched his temple, at a loss for words.
How do you explain to an innocent child that being handsome has nothing to do with whether someone is good or bad?
"Please, Sir! Let me treat you to a movie!"
Magnus, of course, couldn't entertain such an absurd idea as accompanying a child to the cinema, "Does your mother know about this?"
"I'm going out by myself. She doesn't know."
"Then I definitely can't agree to it."
With a frown, Jennifer sulked, "Sir, really? Can't I treat you to dinner with the pocket money I've saved up?"
Magnus could hardly conceal his amusement, "Little girl, you're really willing to go all in just to have some fun, huh?"
Jennifer corrected him seriously, "It's not just to have fun; it's to have fun with you. Won't you please say yes?"
Such a young age, and already so adept at being charming.
Was this something her mother taught her?
Magnus certainly couldn't agree to her proposition.
However, he found her enthusiasm too heartbreaking to bluntly reject.
He had to think of a diversion, "Alright, I'll send you a math puzzle. If you can solve it, I'll agree to your request."
Considering the girl was probably only about six years old, likely just first-grade level at most.
A tough math puzzle would probably be way beyond her ability to solve.
"Sir, can I add you on WhatsApp with your number?"
"Sure."
"Then I'll add you with my number later, and you better accept! My nickname is ‘No More School'!"
Magnus simply sighed.
After hanging up the phone, the WhatsApp contact named "No More School" swiftly sent a connection request.
Magnus tapped 'Accept'.
No More School: "Hey! Send me the problems quick!"
"..."
Magnus was beginning to regret this, even wondering what he'd do if this young girl actually solved them.
"You shouldn't ask anyone for help, and cheating is out of the question."
"Alright, alright, stop nagging! Just send them!"
