Chapter 252 Hold Him Tight
Juniper sent him those messages, and he read every single one.
He listened to the voice messages over and over again.
During the eighteen days he was away, Juniper said goodnight to him every night.
He looked at Jenny, with a hint of guilt and apology in his eyes. "Daddy might not be able to propose to Mommy anymore."
"Why, Daddy? Don't you love Mommy anymore? Have you fallen in love with another woman? Weren't you with another woman all these days you were away?"
Jenny's eyes widened in shock.
She heard from her classmates that if a dad fell in love with another woman, he wouldn't want his child and wife anymore.
Outside the study door, Juniper's fingers dug into her palm, and her heart tightened.
Magnus said, "There's no other woman. The issues between your mom and me have nothing to do with anyone else. It's just... I might not be able to love her anymore."
"Why not? Daddy, I don't understand. Grown-ups are so complicated."
The little one held her head in her hands, her face full of confusion.
Magnus just patted her little head and said cryptically, "You'll understand when you grow up. Loving someone makes you want to possess them, but when you really love someone, if letting go makes their life a bit easier, then letting go is also willing."
"But if Daddy lets go, Mommy's life gets easier. What about you, Daddy? Doesn't letting go hurt you?"
Magnus smiled. "I'm used to the pain, so it's not that bad."
It hurt a bit more this time.
But he wouldn't live much longer, so he wouldn't hurt for long.
Odis told him that without an antidote, he had at most twenty days left.
Jenny furrowed her little brows, struggling to understand.
She just looked into her dad's eyes, sensing his sadness but too young to comprehend the complex emotions within them.
She reached out her little hand and patted Magnus's head. "Daddy, I hope you're happy."
But ever since she could remember, Magnus rarely smiled.
Over the past year, she remembered Daddy always being very serious, only being a bit gentle when he was with Mommy.
Although he was friendly to her as a child, he was more often strict.
Juniper came in with a fruit platter. "Jenny, I need to talk to Daddy. Can you go do your homework for a bit?"
Jenny nodded. "Okay! I'll go do my homework. Mommy, you can do it!"
She couldn't do anything about her Daddy.
The little one took her homework and walked out quickly. At the door, she thoughtfully closed it for them.
"Daddy, Mommy, you guys talk nicely, don't fight. Fighting is bad for a child's growth, it makes them unhealthy."
Magnus and Juniper were speechless.
The little one stood on her tiptoes, holding her homework in one hand and struggling to close the door with the other. "Bye-bye!"
In the study, only Juniper and Magnus were left.
Magnus opened his computer and started working again.
Juniper raised her hand and closed his laptop.
She asked directly, "I heard everything you said to Jenny just now. I want to know, what exactly happened during the eighteen days you were missing?"
Magnus finally looked up at her. "During those days, I was recovering from my injuries."
He had been shot twice, and the injuries were severe. Even if he survived, he couldn't come back to her. But why didn't he even reply to her messages?
"You were hurt and couldn't come back, but why didn't you let us know you were safe? We almost thought you were dead, so we lit candles at home. I sent you messages every night, and you saw them, didn't you? Then why didn't you reply? If I hadn't been chased by the Shadow Syndicate in Sherlock Valley, were you planning to keep hiding from me? Was it that so-called Agency 719 forcing you to do something? What kind of organization is that? And the Shadow Syndicate, why..."
These organizations and the recent events surrounded her like a mystery.
Even though she had been asking Magnus about these things since they met, he always avoided answering.
She didn't know what he was hiding from her, but she thought it wasn't anything good.
"Knowing those things would only bring harm to you and Jenny. The news of me being alive must have reached the Shadow Syndicate by now, and there are urgent matters within the organization that require my attention. Juniper, I can't spare the energy to deal with our relationship right now."
Juniper looked at him, puzzled. "So now Jenny and I have become a burden to you?"
Magnus knew Juniper was very persistent.
If he insisted on forcing her to leave, she definitely wouldn't go. He could only take a roundabout way that was half coaxing and half deceiving. "Even if you and Jenny are a burden, you're a sweet burden. Juniper, be good and go back to Southern City, okay?"
"No."
Juniper stared at him with her watery eyes and refused.
Magnus stood up and pulled her into his arms.
Juniper was slightly stunned. Since they met yesterday, he had been rejecting her or not responding. But now, he suddenly took the initiative to hug her. She didn't know if it was an illusion or something else, but she always vaguely felt that Magnus was pushing her away from him in a gentler yet more resolute manner.
He held her, his hand stroking her hair, kissed her temple, and looked at her with extreme tenderness, so tender it seemed like an illusion.
"Now there are many spies in Imperial Capital monitoring SY. If you and Jenny go to Southern City, it will make things easier for me. You never liked Imperial Capital, and Jenny hasn't been to Southern City. Just take her there for a trip. Once I finish dealing with the company's issues, I'll come to Southern City to get you. You don't like Imperial Capital, so how about we settle in Solara as a family of three? We'll forget about the past, and it will just be you, me, and Jenny, okay?"
Everything he said was too tempting for Juniper.
Even if it was an unrealistic promise, she subconsciously wanted to accept it.
The wonderful things Magnus promised were impossible for her to refuse.
Even if there were traps, she would willingly jump in.
Juniper could only hold him tightly, looking up at him with red eyes. "But if we go to Solara, what about SY? And... Ava..."
What about Ava, the one who killed Lyra, Juniper's nemesis?Could they really let go of all past grudges and live in peace?
Juniper didn't dare to think about it.
When someone had been in the whirlpool of pain for too long, they became accustomed to loss and didn't dare to have a moment of happiness. They feared it and subconsciously felt they didn't deserve happiness.
But she was too tired to hold on any longer. She just wanted to hold onto Magnus tightly and cling to the warmth they had seven years ago.
