Chapter 88 Get Out of Imperial Capital Now
Ava paced the edge of the rooftop, muttering incessantly, "Benjamin isn't dead. He promised not to leave me. Can you go find him? I miss him so much."
"Ava, please come down! Benjamin will be here soon!"
At those words, Ava's gaze, once filled with sorrowful stillness, brightened suddenly.
"Really? You're not lying to me? Is Benjamin really coming?"
Despite being fifty, her mind seemed to have remained at the age of twenty-two, the year her sanity slipped away, making her always appear like a young woman.
"We're not lying, Ava. Benjamin is on his way!"
Just then, Magnus arrived at the rooftop.
The nurse breathed a sigh of relief, "Magnus, you're finally here! Your mother has been asking for Benjamin, and we couldn't calm her down. What should we do?"
Magnus didn't want to startle her, so he slowly approached her.
Ava, standing on the platform, looked down at Magnus and smiled, "Benjamin, you finally came. I've been waiting for you."
She opened her arms, and Magnus seized the moment, sweeping her off the platform into his arms.
It was a close call for everyone involved.
"Magnus, thank goodness you were on time. Your mother gets easily agitated, and we didn't dare to approach her."
Ava looked puzzled, "Why are you calling him Magnus? His last name is Lu."
The nurse just smiled wryly.
Magnus said, "You all can leave now. I'll take care of her."
"Alright."
After the staff at the convalescent home had left the rooftop.
Magnus grasped Ava's shoulders, looked into her eyes, and said solemnly, "Mom, I am Magnus. The murderer who killed Dad will soon be brought to justice."
"Murderer? And who is Magnus?"
Ava mumbled unconsciously, her face clouded with confusion.
Magnus embraced her, "I'm your son. Have you forgotten?"
"Son? The son of me and Benjamin?"
Only then did Ava take a closer look at him.
She raised a hand to touch Magnus's face, as if in disbelief, "My son with Benjamin, you've grown up so much? Son, do you have a girlfriend? Are you married? If not, let me set you up."
"I do have someone I like."
"Who is she? When can you bring her over for me to see? She must be beautiful, right?"
Magnus, seeing her disoriented state and thinking of Juniper, felt a tinge of redness at the corners of his eyes.
Holding Ava, he walked downstairs, "Yeah, she's pretty."
"When will you bring her to meet me? I'll have to dress up nicely, can't embarrass you. Son, should I buy her a gift? They say, the first time a future mother-in-law meets her daughter-in-law, she should give a bracelet. Look, this jade bracelet on my wrist was given to me by your grandmother."
She proudly showed her jade bracelet to Magnus.
She murmured, "Your grandmother was so good to me, I want to be a good mother-in-law too. The person you like, I will treat her well. Bring her over, let me have a look, okay? I really want to meet her."
Was there still a chance? He was unsure.
Once they reached the hospital room, he helped Ava lie down on the bed.
After taking her medication, Ava quickly began to lose consciousness.
Holding Magnus's hand weakly, she murmured, "It's not easy to find someone you love, son. You must cherish her."
He gave a bitter smile.
What if the person he loved was the daughter of his enemy?
Would she still support him?
Sometimes, love was powerless and fragile.
Like a spider's web that could trap you helplessly.
Juniper slept a long, deep sleep.
That sleep left her head groggy.
She reached for her phone and, as soon as she connected to the internet, a barrage of news alerts flooded in like a tidal wave.
#X City Governor Suspected of Abuse of Power#
#Alexander Temporarily Suspended#
# Governor's Daughter Testifies Falsely in Court#
# Governor's Daughter Recants in Court#
# Governor's Daughter Reports Her Own Father#
Various sensational headlines made Juniper's eyes sting.
She didn't bother to read the articles. Anyway, they were unlikely to say anything positive.
Her bond with Alexander, her father, was now completely severed.
To say she was unmoved would be false. After all, the man taken away for investigation was her biological father. No matter how poorly he had treated her, the fact that she had a hand in his downfall filled her with a sense of profound loss.
Her cell phone rang.
It was Lyra calling.
She really didn't want to answer, but worried that Lyra might be concerned, she picked it up.
"Hello, Mom?"
"Juniper, I've seen the news online. What's going on? You went to the X City Courthouse and recanted your statement for Magnus. Are you in any trouble? I've been trying to call you since last night. Why didn't you answer? I've been sick with worry."
She reassured her mother, "Mom, I'm fine. Right now, the only people in trouble are Alexander and Dashiell Beaumont. Mom, by doing this, will you hate me?"
She had always known that although Lyra claimed to hate Alexander, after so many years of marriage, it was impossible to believe there were no residual feelings. The only ones capable of such complete emotional detachment were not humans but either gods or demons.
Lyra sighed, "The year I married Alexander, I was about your age. I watched him build everything from scratch, and to say I feel nothing would be a lie. But Alexander has committed too many atrocities. Whatever fate befalls him, he has earned. Over the years, he's been relentless toward us, his wife and daughter. The fact that we haven't sought revenge is already generous enough. Juniper, as long as you are happy, that's what matters. I'm already one foot in the grave."
"Mom, don't say that. You need to live a long and healthy life."
"A hundred years is too burdensome. I don't want to live so long and be a drag on you. If it weren't for me, you and Magnus wouldn't be in this situation."
Juniper forced a smile, "Mom, honestly, the situation between me and him isn't really because of you. Mom, do you know Benjamin Brown?"
"Benjamin Brown?"
Hearing this name made Lyra's heart skip a beat.
"His son is Magnus. Mom, Alexander was the one who killed Benjamin Brown, right?"
Lyra was shocked, "Could it be that Magnus got close to you for revenge?"
"Mom, you knew Benjamin Brown?"
Lyra didn't dare to say much, only adding quietly, "Juniper, if Magnus approached you with malice from the start to seek revenge, you should leave the Imperial Capital soon and never return. The Beaumonts might seem defeated, with Alexander now taken away for investigation, but you never know when he might be released. If he finds you, he may seek retribution. They say even a fierce tiger won't eat its cubs, but Alexander is ruthless and might do something terrible to you. You should leave and go as far as you can."
