Chapter 89 She Couldn't Leave Anymore

If only she had known these things earlier, before discovering the lung cancer, before her depression returned, she certainly would have taken her mother and Jennifer away from the Imperial Capital and X City, far from all the trouble.

Voiceless, she said, "Mom, I can't leave now. I have to stay in the city. The court and other departments could summon me at any time."
"Juniper, how could you be so careless? You implicated yourself just to change your testimony for Magnus. If I had known earlier, I would have told you to stay away from him—the son of Benjamin Brown. I'm sorry, Juniper, it's all my fault. Everything was caused by me."
"Mom, what are you talking about? Even if Alexander hadn't used you to threaten me, he would have found a way to force me to testify against Magnus. This all would have happened anyway."
On the other end of the line, Lyra covered her mouth, weeping softly.
"You always put others before yourself," Lyra sobbed. "When will you ever think about yourself first? I'd rather you were a little selfish. When you came to see me and gave me your bank card, you were prepared not to come back after changing your statement for Magnus. Why didn't I realize it sooner? I kept feeling like something bad was going to happen..."
"Mom, don't be upset. I'm alright for now. And Magnus has not said anything about taking revenge. It was all Alexander's doing. He wouldn't be so unreasonable."
"Juniper, listen to your mother and stay away from Magnus. He's intense in his affections and hatreds and can be extreme. You don't know what he might do."
"Yeah, Mom, I'll heed your advice. I won't associate with him anymore."
She didn't dare to get involved with him further.
Some things are doomed not to have a happy ending. It's better not to start at all.
After hanging up the phone, Lyra's heart was still racing.
She remembered the year Benjamin Brown suffered a heart attack. She was there...
She could never have imagined Alexander would kick away the life-saving medicine. She had wanted to retrieve it for Benjamin Brown, but Alexander had pulled her away.
At that time, she was newly married to Alexander, and they were basking in the glow of their honeymoon phase.

After the incident, Alexander knelt before her, tears streaming down his face, begging her not to expose the secret.

After Benjamin Brown's death, his wife Ava, who had previously been close to her, came to ask about the truth in secret.

But people are inherently selfish and yet also capable of compassion.

How could she betray Alexander, who was still her husband at the time?

She kept silent about the matter, which led to a falling out with Ava.

Later, she heard that Ava had lost her mind, driven to insanity.

She felt guilty but was powerless to help.

"Ava..."

Lyra's gaze suddenly sharpened as she remembered something.

Ava was also in this sanatorium.

Previously, Ava had recognized her and clung to her desperately.

At the time, she had thought Ava was simply delusional, mistaking her for someone else, but now, reflecting on it, the face she remembered was indeed Ava's!

The scandal involving the Beaumonts of X City had caused an uproar throughout the Imperial Capital.

Soon, Alexander was being paraded around like a captive, with one scandal after another breaking out, each capable of ruining his reputation completely.

Behind the scenes, it seemed as though an invisible hand was pushing Alexander towards complete disgrace.

After Michael saw the news, his first concern was for Juniper.

Just as he was about to call her, his sister Patricia snatched away his phone.

"Brother, at a time like this, you're not still thinking about associating with that Juniper, are you? Her father is a criminal, and she's no better, assisting in his crimes. She's tainted now. If you want to join her in her disgrace, I will not stand for it!"

"Patricia, give me the phone."

"I won't! You can't have anything to do with anyone from the Beaumonts right now. They're all dirty."

Patricia's tone was full of disgust.

She despised Juniper, wishing she would just disappear.

Anytime Juniper showed up, Magnus would become lenient, and even her own brother would side with that wretched girl.

But what was so great about Juniper?

Michael had reached his limit with his sister's behavior.

He snatched the phone back, "Patricia, my affairs are none of your business! And there's something I haven't told you. Your beloved Magnus said if you don't change your foul temper, you don't need to bother going to work at SY anymore."

"What are you talking about? Impossible! How could Magnus send me away? Brother, is it because you asked Magnus to convince me to leave?"
"These words," Patricia fumed, her lips turning white from the pressure of her clenched teeth, "came straight from your Magnus. He said if I can't change my temper, SY just won't have room for me."

She squeezed her fists, remembering, "I got it. It's because last time at Sherlock Valley, I gave Juniper a hard time. Magnus wanted to teach me a lesson for that. Juniper, oh Juniper, she's nothing but trouble!"

"Think what you want, but I agree with your Magnus. With that temper of yours, you're currently not a good fit for SY!"

"You—"

Before Patricia could let her temper flare, Michael was already out the door with his phone and car keys in hand.

Patricia stood there, grinding her teeth.

So it's all about Juniper, huh?

She refused to believe it!

If Magnus didn't like her, no problem; all she had to do was win over Magnus's mother!

As long as his mom liked her and given how devoted Magnus was to her, when the time came if his mother had stood by her side, Magnus would surely waver.

Before, Michael had mentioned that Magnus's mother was staying in a care facility on the outskirts of the Imperial Capital.

Patricia's eyes hardened, her red lips curving slightly.

The care facility.

It took Patricia quite a while to locate this secluded place.

Magnus really had some nerve, leaving his birth mother in such a place.

She entered the yard and pulled aside a temp nurse to ask, "Do you know where Ava is? Which room?"

"Ava? Is she the pretty lady who's often agitated?"

"That must be her. Yes, she's not quite mentally sound."

"She's in Room 416."

Patricia made her way to the fourth floor, heading straight for Room 416.

Ava was sitting by the window, fussing with her roses.

Those were all from Magnus, filling the entire windowsill.

"Ava?" Patricia knocked on the door.

Hearing the sound, Ava turned around and saw Patricia, "And you are?"

"I'm a friend of Magnus. Ava, I heard you've been staying here and wanted to check on you. How have you been feeling lately?"

Ava looked at Patricia and suddenly smiled.

Taking Patricia's hand, she asked with curiosity and joy, "Are you the one my son likes?"

Patricia was taken aback. Had Ava misunderstood something?

But this opportunity was too good to pass up—she was determined to grasp it tightly!
She smiled sweetly, "Has Magnus mentioned me to you?"

Ava, innocent as ever, nodded with a smile, "Yeah, he said you're beautiful."

"Really?" Patricia's smile grew even prouder.

She glanced outside, "Let's go take a walk. It's so nice out; I'll keep you company for a chat."

"Sure."

They went to the shaded pathways of the nursing home.

Suddenly, Ava caught a glimpse of a familiar figure.

She pointed at Lyra, sitting in a wheelchair ahead, and screamed, "What is she doing here!"
