Chapter 275 The Truth
In a swanky private hospital in Southern City, Christopher lay unconscious, hooked up to advanced medical equipment. Ronald, Karen, Juniper, and his daughter Sophie stood by his side.
Outside the room, Karen crossed her arms and said, "We still don't know what caused this accident, but Windsor Group can't just sit around waiting. Ronald and I should keep running things. When Dad wakes up..."
Before Karen could finish, Sophie cut in with a smile, "Karen, you and Ronald have been helping my dad for years, and I appreciate it. But with him in such bad shape, we need to pick a new leader fast to avoid any chaos."
Karen gave her a once-over, clearly unimpressed. "A new leader? You mean yourself?"
Sophie replied, "I'm his only biological daughter. Legally, I'm the one who should inherit. Of course, you and Ronald will still keep your shares in Windsor Group."
Karen sneered, not holding back, "Whether you're his only biological daughter is still up for debate. Even if you are, Dad's not dead yet, and Windsor Group isn't yours to control. Sophie, did you have something to do with Dad's sudden incident?"
"What are you talking about? He's my father, why would I hurt him? But you, an adopted daughter, did you harm him to grab power?" Sophie shot back.
Karen pointed at her. "Watch it. You can call him whatever you want, but don't talk nonsense!"
Ronald stepped in to break it up. "If you want to argue, do it outside. Don't disturb Dad here!"
Karen glared at Sophie and said coldly, "I don't think we should bring amateurs into the group's affairs. And since we don't know why Dad's in a coma, we should get some bodyguards at the door. No suspicious people should be allowed in."
Sophie clenched her fists. "Who are you calling suspicious?"
"Whoever's asking! After twenty-five years of searching for the biological daughter, she suddenly shows up. Isn't that suspicious?"
Sophie was about to argue more, but Karen had already turned and strutted away in her high heels.
Ronald said, "Don't let it get to you, that's just how Karen is."
Sophie took a deep breath, trying to calm down. "But with Dad in a coma, no one's managing the group's affairs. If this drags on, people will find out, and it'll be a huge blow to the group. We need to take action."
Ronald listened. "What do you want to do?"
"Announce my status as the successor to the public. As his biological daughter, I'll temporarily take over Christopher's duties to keep the group stable. Even if something happens to him, the group won't fall apart and will still be controlled by the Abbotts."
Ronald looked at her thoughtfully but didn't agree right away. Instead, he turned to Juniper. "Quinn, what do you think?"
Juniper looked a bit surprised. "I came back to see Christopher. I don't have shares in the group, so I don't have a say. Ronald, you shouldn't ask me about this. But I do want to know, how did Christopher suddenly fall into a coma?"
"The doctors are still stumped. Dad never had heart issues, so they're still trying to figure out what caused his sudden heart failure," Ronald said.
Magnus, leaning against the wall nearby, frowned slightly.
Could the Shadow Syndicate have gone after Christopher too?
Ronald shot a wary glance at Magnus. "Quinn, shouldn't he step aside?"
Even though SY and Windsor Group were partners, business was a battlefield. One moment they were allies, the next, they were rivals.
And Magnus, as the head of SY Group, now knew about Christopher's coma. If he pulled any shady moves, it could seriously hurt Windsor Group.
Juniper said, "He wouldn't do that."
But Magnus had clearly heard their conversation. He picked up Jenny and casually walked over to the terrace.
Ronald's suspicion of Magnus was understandable given Magnus's unique position.
Juniper looked through the ICU glass at the unconscious Christopher. Her heart felt heavy, and she couldn't shake the somber mood.
Christopher had given her a fatherly love she never had before. To Juniper, he was like a mountain, shielding her from life's storms. But now, he had suddenly collapsed.
She hadn't even had the chance to repay him.
Standing beside her, Ronald glanced at the terrace.
Magnus suddenly sending Juniper back to Southern City was definitely odd.
He knew a bit about the recent troubles at SY and knew that SY had been targeted by some dark force. But for Magnus to send Juniper back to Southern City was unusual.
On the terrace, Magnus's phone rang.
The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number from Imperial Capital.
He answered, "Hello?"
"Is this Mr. Blackwood?" A female voice came from the phone.
Magnus didn't recognize it. "Who are you?"
"I'm Sinclair. I called Juniper, but she didn't answer."
Magnus's eyes darkened, and his tone became distant. "I'll tell her later. If it's important, you can call her again."
Sinclair took a deep breath, paused for half a second, and said solemnly, "No need. I can tell you."
Magnus frowned. "What is it?"
"On the day Juniper's mom had her accident, Patricia was also at that nursing home," Sinclair spoke cautiously.
She didn't outright say Patricia was the culprit because there was no solid proof.
But from the conversation between Patricia and Michael in the study, it was clear Patricia was there when Juniper's mom had the accident. Who would believe there was no issue?
If Patricia hadn't done anything wrong, why would she run?
Magnus's grip on the phone tightened, his dark eyes narrowing with a sharp glint. "How do you know?"
"They had a sibling argument. Patricia admitted it herself. I overheard it. One night, I wanted to tell Juniper, but then I had a car accident. The accident was arranged by Patricia."
"So you're telling me this now on purpose?" Magnus asked.
Sinclair took a breath. "Yes, I want Patricia to be punished."
"If Patricia is the culprit, she'll die a horrible death. But if I find out you're falsely accusing her, you won't have another chance to speak." Magnus's voice was cold and piercing, carrying a strong sense of menace even through the phone.
Sinclair felt a chill run down her spine and swallowed hard, "I wouldn't be foolish enough to play games with you."
Messing with Magnus was a dead end.
In this world, the only person who could trick Magnus and come out unscathed was probably Juniper.
