Chapter 399 Magnus is the Champion of Sarcasm (1)
When Juniper was going through tough times, she borrowed money for meals from Clio. No matter what Clio was like, now that they met, giving her a ride was just a small favor, a way to repay the kindness from back then.
Juniper didn't refuse and unlocked the central lock. "It's okay, just get in."
Clio smiled and opened the back door. "Juniper, thank you."
Magnus had a bit to drink that evening and was lounging comfortably in the passenger seat.
Juniper, who was driving, asked, "Which subway line do you take?"
Clio replied, "I take Line 3."
Juniper glanced at the navigation system. Line 3 was quite far from here, so she said, "Where do you live? I'll just drive you home."
"Really? That would be great, thank you."
Clio gave the address of her apartment complex.
Juniper focused on driving.
The city was very congested on a weekend night, and they hit several red lights.
While waiting at a red light, Magnus suddenly reached out his hand towards her.
Juniper turned to look at him.
Her eyes said: There are other people in the back.
She didn't reach out to hold his hand.
Magnus, however, directly took her hand and brought it to his temple, rubbing it. "Headache," he said with a thin-lipped expression.
Juniper was about to say something.
Clio in the backseat asked, "How much did you drink tonight, Magnus?"
Magnus lazily ignored the question, as if he hadn't heard it.
Juniper also wanted to know how much he drank. "Answer the question."
Magnus turned his head slightly to look at her. "Three glasses. Eugene and Ethan drank more."
They had been drinking whiskey at their table. Three glasses were Magnus's usual amount, enough to have some effect but not to get drunk.
The light turned green.
Juniper pulled her hand back and gripped the steering wheel. "With your tolerance, how could three glasses give you a headache?"
Magnus responded lightly, "Having a wife around, my tolerance is naturally lower."
Juniper was momentarily stunned, her heart racing.
She glanced at him, almost laughing.
Wife?
He said it so naturally and smoothly.
Clio, sitting in the seat behind the driver, could clearly see Magnus's expression from her angle.
He was looking at Juniper, smiling nonchalantly.
Because he had been drinking, his eyes had a hint of intoxication, deep and affectionate.
Clio's fingers, resting on her lap, instinctively clenched.
She mustered the courage to join their conversation, smiling. "The teachers at school are always in the classroom and don't socialize much, yet they can drink so much? Juniper, I remember you were allergic to alcohol?"
In college, Juniper had accidentally consumed a drink containing alcohol, resulting in a rash on her neck and a groggy feeling that made her sleep in her dorm bed all afternoon.
That evening, Magnus found out and, with the dorm supervisor, carried Juniper to the hospital.
Juniper responded, "I used to be very allergic, but now I can drink a little. I still react, but it's not as severe."
"How did that happen?"
Juniper smiled. "Maybe drinking a few more times caused a slight desensitization."
They chatted casually for a bit.
Clio then asked, "By the way, Juniper, why aren't you working at the TV station anymore? Are you planning to be a full-time housewife after getting married?"
Juniper didn't know how to answer.
It was a complicated and convoluted story.
She glanced at Magnus and joked, "He won't let me."
Magnus let out a low laugh. "Still holding a grudge?"
They spoke in half-truths.
Clio, not knowing their situation, naturally couldn't understand. She tried to find topics to continue the conversation, but each topic quickly ended.
Unwilling to give up, she asked, "By the way, Magnus, Juniper, when are you planning to have the wedding? Remember to send me an invitation. Juniper, you were my best roommate in college. Remember how we used to eat in the cafeteria together? How about I treat you and Magnus to dinner next week?"
Juniper and Magnus were both relatively reserved and not the type to quickly bond with "half-acquainted" friends.
Especially since this person might not even qualify as a friend.
Juniper glanced at Magnus, who clearly wasn't interested, and politely declined. "Maybe next time. He has a dinner next week."
Clio felt a bit disappointed but smiled. "Magnus is so busy. What about you, Juniper? You're not working now, so you must have time to eat or shop."
Before Juniper could respond, Magnus answered for her, "Juniper doesn't have time. She has to be with me."
Hearing this, Clio naturally said, "Juniper, you're so clingy? Well, in today's world, with so many people having ulterior motives, you have to keep a close watch, just in case..."
Magnus interrupted her in a cold tone, "You got it wrong. It's me who can't be without Juniper."
Clio awkwardly laughed. "I see. There aren't many good men like Magnus left. Juniper, you should cherish him."
Magnus frowned, seemingly annoyed, and said to Juniper, "Focus on driving. I'll take a nap. Wake me when we arrive."
In other words: Everyone shut up.
This guy really had a bad temper.
Juniper held back her laughter and continued driving.
The atmosphere in the car was so quiet it felt strange.
After a long silence, Clio couldn't help but lean forward from the back seat and ask Juniper, "Juniper, your diamond ring is huge. It must be expensive, right? How much did it cost?"
Juniper honestly didn't know the exact price. "I don't know. The person who knows is already asleep."
Clio was slightly surprised. "Aren't you curious?"
"Not really."
It wasn't that she was pretending not to be curious. She knew very well that with Magnus's current wealth, he would be generous. For him, money was just a number.
That pink fireworks display, which lasted about half an hour, cost $5 million.
Did she really need to ask about the value of this diamond ring?
The thing was, Magnus had done so many extravagant things that Juniper naturally wouldn't be curious anymore.
Clio sighed. "Juniper, I'm so envious of you. Magnus is not only capable but also willing to treat you well. Some successful men are only successful themselves and aren't generous to their partners."
"Magnus must have a lot of connections, right? Juniper, can you ask Magnus to introduce me to a few people? Even if nothing comes of it, it would be good to network."
As soon as she finished speaking.
Magnus suddenly spoke from the passenger seat. "People with certain abilities make certain friends. The people I know aren't suitable for you."
Magnus spoke bluntly, without regard for the other person's feelings.
Clio's face turned pale, and she bit her lip, feeling a bit wronged. "Magnus, is it because I'm not good-looking?"
Juniper glanced at Clio in the rearview mirror.
Clio looked like she was about to cry, appearing meek and pitiful.
Juniper casually comforted her. "That's not what he meant. I think you're quite pretty."
Magnus, however, was particularly blunt, his voice cold. "People should have self-awareness. Truly good-looking people don't constantly ask others if they're good-looking."
