Chapter 100
Kaiden
Heidi laid on a cushion on the floor, next to my leg in my office while babygirl went to get Noah for me. Jerold was in the guest office chair, reading some of the minor incident reports that were originally on my desk. They had stayed the night, as they had the weekend off together. I typed silently, trying to hide my slight agitation. I didn’t trust one of the guards that worked in the prison with him, as he too was an avid human eater.
[Remember Commander Assistant Benet. The Human Is Off Limits. You will join Mr. Cobbler on my office floor if he has so much as a scratch.] I linked.
[Alpha…. I already left. I want nothing to do with that loud, smelly, annoying mortal.] He linked jokingly. I couldn’t help but hold in a laugh, I was literally sitting right in front of the man’s mate. He gave a knowing look, and chuckled a bit nodding his head.
[Yes. But that loud annoying …. Cologne smelling human is the mate of a King. Do not forget that. I would rather not have to deal with that level of bullshit.] I link back.
He didn’t live in the packhouse, he had come to give me an incident report on the disrespectful Mr. Ernest Manning. It took everything I had not to kill him. He had a Rogue mentality, and was removed from his former pack because of it. I ordered for him to get a year’s worth of behavior and therapy, to see if that would help. Maybe the thought of seeing his mate would make him fucking behave, as they were full members of LemonMoon. Leon may be easy going, but he was still an Alpha for well over a thousand years. He’s going to kill this guy if I let him out like he is now. Why am I even bothering? Ugh
I was interrupted by Heidi’s humming. I didn’t know she could sing. She seemed to be content with her spellbook and must have forgotten that we were in the room. It sounded a tad sad, but had a sweet melody to it. It was the tune that Connor sung at the Lunar Festival, though she sounded much better. I hummed with her, which surprised her at first, but I enjoyed my pup’s company.
“Jerold Help! They won’t stop nipping my ankles!” Squealed Noah, and I instantly felt sorry for the little guy. That many pups could overpower a wolf, yet alone one human.
My smaller pups trailed behind their mother, Izzy pulling on her leg the whole way. I carefully grabbed the tiny terror, who liked to bite. “No!” she squealed; her little eyes red with her wolf snarling. I rolled my eyes, ignoring her protests, and got bit on the ankles hard enough to yelp. Caleb, Michelle, Jason and even little Mini attacked my heels; their leader was in trouble. I wanted to growl at them, but I would let them have their small victory.
“fuck...” I mumbled; the gremlins were drawing blood.
“Mama!” She squealed after I put her down, running to babygirl.
“Babygirl save me!” I was taking high steps, and Lady damnit, Caleb wouldn’t let go. I had to growl at him. He growled back but let go. I looked dumbfounded… the boy is 3.
Against my better judgment, I picked him up, and he did not protest. I let my eyes turn red out of curiosity. He responded with the same intensity. He was unafraid, and he showed me his little teeth, but I could smell he was getting a little scared. I didn’t know if I should be proud or worried. I heard what grandmother said, but was this part of it too?
I growled at him, showing my teeth, making him yelp. I let him go and he ran to babygirl. “Mama!” He yelled, being scooped up by Eclipse in her other arm. The glare she gave me made a shiver go down my spine. Heidi let out a long yawn, and went to her room. I was glad that she wasn’t afraid; but she left me to die.
[What. Are you doing. To our children?!] She screamed in my head, making me hold my ears.
[Caleb is a strange one.] I linked. [He showed no real fear until I faked being serious. This is not normal.]
[Maybe he’ll grow out of it.] She linked looking at him with worry.
[Maybe.] I link. He stared at me with red eyes, but his hair was bristled.
“He reminds me of Ash when he was with his father, Grendel.” Said Jerold.
“What?” I asked confused.
“The unshifted ones… they live in the furthest, most uninhabited parts of Europe, but Grendel is the oldest. The first. He reminds me of them.” He said, reaching for Mini to sit on his lap. She tried grabbing the papers to chew, but his stern look was enough to get her to stop.
“How do you know of them?” I asked.
“To summarize an entire life story, I’m fucking old.” He said with a small smile.
“How old?” Blurted Noah with a smile.
“…Since cattle were domesticated.” He said with a grunt. “I’m the first half-beast, it is why I am sometimes called the King of Halves. My mother was human by the way.” He said with a grin on his face, knowing that he shocked us…. that explains why his people were pretty much all male and so rare. “My people must be born of a woman. It doesn’t matter what race though.” He said with an eyebrow wiggle. I cringed.
“Ok, Bath time for the babies.” Said babygirl, who changed the subject.
We agreed that I would put them to sleep. Isabelle and Mini splashed with Jason, while Caleb bathed himself with a loofa on his own, completely unaware that he was a small child.
“Caleb don’t you want to play in the bubbles?” I asked him nicely, splashing him.
“No, and I am clean.” He said looking at the towel, knowing he was too short to reach it.
He behaved like grandfather too much for it to be imitation. I didn’t know if that was a bad thing, but it seemed that I would have to make sure I really work with him like grandmother said just in case.
Caleb dried himself off and waited patiently while the girls still splashed and played. I put him in his pajamas, then sent him to babygirl. “Goodnight dad.” He said as he left.
“I love you son.” I told him, looking at his little eyes light up. He then turned and left the bathroom like a man, and I wasn’t sure if I was okay with that.
“I love you too Izzy, and you too Jason, and your dads love you Mini.” I said, pulling the plug and getting them towels.
Babygirl came in the bathroom with Caleb holding her hand, and after everyone was changed into clothes, we let them all share one room. I linked Shelly to bring their pup too, because Mini would go home tomorrow, and they all seemed to just accept her into their little pack.
“Tell us a story!” Beamed Izzy. I would not deny them that. They would grow up so soon, and I wanted more time with them like this.
“Well,” I scratched my chin, and sat at the foot of the bed. I had drawn a crowd now, as it seemed everyone and their left foot wanted to hear.
“There once was a wolf who was so strong, that he could win any fight with the smack of his paw!” I let my claws come out, and they squealed. They were easy to impress. I saw Connor roll his eyes. “Everyone loved him, and they made him king. He was fair, and used his power for good, and helping others.” Jerold scoffed and I shot him a glare.
I continued. “He was the Charred One, and he was supposed to defeat Asanguis the Acidic, the blue snake of destruction. He is the son of the Horned One, and is strong enough to flatten hills. His venom could melt iron. He was so big, that he hid under a mountain! He would come out and eat anything. He was never full, and everything he ate, made him stronger.” Mini looked like she was getting scared, so I dialed it down. “But the king wasn’t alone. He had other strong wolves with him. The Frosted One, the Earthen One, and the Breathless One. All the strongest wolves came together, with the Unicorns, dragons, elves, minotaurs, and the fairies.” I said. Jerold pulled up a chair and finished the story.
“Did the unicorns fly daddy?” Asked Izzy. My Lady she was obsessed with them.
“Only one. Only Queen Sky.” I said to her, ruffling her hair, earning me a growl from her. Jerold cleared his throat. His eyes were almost glowing red. It was as if he were remembering.
“The Charred One, and the other kings and queens went to stop this. With his flaming bite, he stopped Asanguis with King Ezmeros, the Dragon King, he goes by a different name now as I do. All the powers of all the supernaturals confused him. He was defeated. I tied him in a knot with the magic of the elf king Sagrinal, Queen Diana of the fairies, and the late Queen Zing-Xi of the witches, and shoved him deep in the ground. The Charred One, and the Battle Bull agreed to visit his burial site every hundred years, until he either dies.. which I don’t think he Can, or vows in blood to yield.” He said sternly.
“Will he ever escape?” Asked Connor.
“Eh, it’s more than likely he’ll find his mate first. Queen Diana put him in a deep sleep after he tried to escape.” He said casually.
“Daddy was papa Noah there too?!” said Mini with bright eyes. Jerold laughed.
“No, but if he was, he probably would have talked him into submission.” He said with a small smile.
Noah scoffed loudly, getting giggles from most in the room, and the little children were tucked in. They fell asleep no problem.
“So, how long until he wakes up. Spells don’t last forever.” I said in the hall.
“Probably in about three decades. Sky dreamed of his destructive wake… 70 years ago. He is the Serpent King, though his people are no more, and even worse still is the older brother.” He said seriously.
“Why not just kill him in his sleep.” I asked.
“This is a secret. Kings cannot die, nor our mates. We must be defeated by our kind, in fair, one on one combat… Asanguis killed all serpentkind for their disloyalty, so none are left to challenge.” He said looking at Noah, and putting a clawed finger in his chest lightly. “That DOES NOT mean you run into a shootout, because you’ll feel every bullet.” He warned.
He gasped dramatically. “Like I would- I would NEVER.” He complained.
“…. you do realize I hear your thoughts. The idea was forming while I was talking pipsqueak.” He said with a grin, flicking him on the forehead.
I had seen enough, I left them in the hall to bicker quietly out there, while me and Eclipse went to bed.
