Book 2: Chapter 61

Heidi
“Thank you mistress.” He hummed happily, eating a cheeseburger from the cafeteria cross legged on the floor. It was his third one. Wrappers were stacked needly to his right while he ate them with his left.
He had been given some navy blue jogging pants, while John refused to stay and heal his reopened wounds. He chose to get staples and go home, while I now had a bodyguard who was at least seven feet tall. He wouldn’t fool any humans any time soon though. He still had his whiplike fluff ended tail and two of his largest horns out, though I don’t think he could help that.
John chose to wear a hoodie out with dark jeans, and he got someone to go get his orange truck. “Son are you sure you don’t want to spend at least a few more hours here? You’re still so injured I can smell it.” Asked his father, but John refused.
“I hurt, but as it is, my stitches will probably be removed in two or three days. Plus my bones are set thanks to my wolf.” He clawed off the cast, flexing his fingers, but Rahrraam spoke with his mouth full
“Your father is right. You feel good because of your powers, but you’ll hurt in a little while.” He said licking his fingers.
“No, I’m not staying here while that ass is.” He grumbled, while Rahrraam agreed.
“If I knew he needed to be humbled, I would have done so sooner.” He growled. He stood, locking eyes with a nurse who came in with the release paper. He looked like he was trying to read it, but the confusion on his face told me he didn’t read English.
John signed himself out, and got his car keys from her, and she ran out feeling intimidated by the man whose gaze to anyone else looked confrontational and hungry. I knew better. He was a rat for the longest time, and before that a demon goat. He didn’t have facial expressions, so his default was like that.
He followed me closely without a word, and John held my hand. I don’t think he liked another male around me so closely, but he didn’t have to worry about that. He saw me as his master, and I could understand him without speaking with him. He was alert, holding his whip from hell. He wanted to probably test his new body, but I don’t think anyone would willingly do that.
“You stink like matches. You must smoke.” Said John when he let me in the car.
“This new flesh is reformed from the Master himself. I’ll take a shower in your room when we get home.” He said casually.
“Oh no. You aren’t going in there.” he glared at him from the mirror.
“Why not? Do you worry of my superior form little virgin?” He smiled.
“What?! No! That’s me and my mate’s bathroom!” He complained. Rahrraam laughed.
“Then why is it a problem now? I don’t understand.” He said genuinely confused.
“Because I said so!” Said John flustered.
“That isn’t a real reason. Give me one and I will bathe and sleep outside. I have no problem with that. I will also hunt my own meat if you do not wish me welcome.” He said confused how to get out the car. He rode in the backseat, and I reached back and showed him how. “Thank you, mistress.”
“No problem.” I smiled. “But for John’s sake… I guess at night be a rat?” I suggested and he nodded.
“I was going to do that anyway. It was fun seeing him become so upset.” He chuckled. “I would never disrespect the mistress with inappropriate behavior… especially since it is she who gives me my mate.” He mumbled.
“What?” Asked John.
“I must ask permission to court. When she becomes with child, traditionally I would mate with the demon of her male, but since you do not have one, I will have to request one with her permission.” He mumbled.
“Wow, sorry I don’t have some sexy succubus.” Joked John, but Rahrraam rolled his eyes.
“Be glad. They are a terrible bunch.” He corrected, going inside. Garnet was instantly hostile charging my demon with blades from his pockets, though Rahrraam held his hands in a T.
“Who is that and why do my instincts scream not to trust him?” He asked.
“I am Rahrraam, the Flayer. Heidi’s familiar Garnet.” He smiled. He sounded so proud to introduce himself. Garnet put away his blades and hesitantly shook his hand. Ann was on the couch, using it for a shield. He reached into my pocket, pulling out the blank piece of paper that he’d put in there ages ago, and sat at the table. He made no effort to be friendly or share words with anyone, not even me. He was on a mission, and I sat next to him to look over his shoulder.
He got a bowl, and bit his wrist, letting the black blood ooze slowly until he was satisfied enough to lick it closed.
“What is he doing?” Asked John. “No magic in the house.” He chastised. He was ignored.
He used his claw for the pen, and his black blood was its ink. He wrote demonic words on the paper, and handed it to me. He placed it in my hands, expecting me to know what to do with it. “Fire please my lady.” He asked with a bowed head.
My hands glowed red, and it caught on fire, but the words he wrote floated into the air. They landed on him, making a collar of letters on his neck. It looked branded into his skin, and soon he smelled of burning flesh. He said nothing, allowing the marks to turn into a raised black tattoo around his neck.
“Are you ok?” I asked, but he smiled genuinely.
“Yes mistress. Please allow me to shower and retire for the day. I am rather spent.” He asked politely, and I would let him. I nodded, and he got up, taking off his pants. I tried not to look, focusing my attention on my disgruntled mate.
“Next time change IN the room. Little shit.” Grumbled John.
“It’s only flesh.” He yelled back.
“Anyway.” Said Garnet. “I’m taking Ann out tonight. I requested off, but I made sure that Xavier’s watching the house.” He smiled.
“How far off is the Harvest Moon this year?” I asked.
“A week from now. Honestly… if she isn’t my true mate, I’ll make her my mark if you’re willing.” He smiled.
“I can’t think of any other wolf I’d want to be with.” She smiled. They kissed, and it made me happy to see her thrive here. If it weren’t for chance, the gods, or just plain old fashioned luck she’d still be a Hunter’s wife…
“Well have fun you two. I got it here.” Said John, fully confident in himself, but he was heavily injured.
After they left, I grabbed my mate and hugged him close. “I know you need to rest.” I told him, and he held me back gently.
“I do… but I can’t relax. I Need you to be ok. I know your demon will protect you, but honestly… in my heart I can only feel worried for you. Aikesh saw his true form…. And he’s turned out to be pettier than I thought… I don’t want to wake up to you being handed over to the church or something.” He mumbled.
“No wolf in his right mind would do that!” I exclaimed, but he rested his chin on my head.
“Heidi… I don’t think he is. He was so rabid about being stronger than me. We almost killed each other because he Refused to acknowledge that he was weaker. Even now, when Rahrraam got ahold of him, he didn’t once submit. You didn’t see that or notice it but I did. I have a feeling that we’ve made an even seated enemy….” He mumbled kissing me on the top of my head.
“If he did something like that he would endanger this entire pack…” I said quietly.
“I know… but this is for me to handle. Get a shower and some rest.” He suggested kindly, leading me to the bedroom. Rahrraam was on a pillow asleep as a rat, and I took off my clothes. John did too, but he wouldn’t turn around so I could see his body… his back had deep black bruises… so I knew his front was worse.
“Turn around.” I said putting my hand on his shoulder, but he refused.
“Just get in the shower Heidi… you don’t need to see.” He said quietly.
“I do… I can’t heal it... but I need to know how badly it reopened.” I asked, but the glare he gave me made me pause.
“No. It wouldn’t be right for you to see this… I don’t think I could live with having you cry for me.” He said leaving out the room. Was it that bad that he almost growled at me…? He sounded like he threw up in the guest bathroom, and I went in to see the toilet full of blood.
His scars were semi open, but healed as if he had rested a few days. It didn’t stop me from patting his back gently, letting him get it out. Most of this was probably from him trying to fight Aikesh over me… and that made me feel guilty. Ultimately if I wouldn’t have said anything he would have probably kept egging John on anyway… I had to be strong for him.
I let my hands turn green, but this time they burned uncomfortably. I tried healing him, but I felt sick to my stomach and I had to stop. I began to get a light bruise where his was, I could feel it, but with my cloak on he couldn’t see it.
“Why’d you stop?” He asked heaving one last time.
“It didn’t take.” I half lied. I couldn’t do it…. I was bound with a demon proper now… healing magic came from Lia’s grace. She was a good goddess to let me use that power long enough as it was, but I needed to find a spell book of the Horned One to help him.
The problem was that it was rare… anything to do with him were almost always destroyed out of fear.
