Chapter 115

Connor
I adjusted my tie as I walked into the stupid cathedral. It was an errand that I figured I would do for Noah, to flush the vampire venom and witch magic out the little guy’s system. He couldn’t go to a human hospital for this, and he didn’t want to go to ours…. As there really wasn’t anything we could do either.
I walked into the grand place, and it was after hours, because it was Tuesday. No one was in there except the priests and nuns and such, but I would respect this place. I could feel the holy energy from the walls, and it made me uncomfortable. I saw the little booth, and went inside out of half curiosity, and half knowing that I would have to explain why I was here to the XIII Sect of the Light. I didn’t want trouble, I only needed supplies.
I rung the little bell, and waited inside the Confessional. The little bench inside the box creaked under my weight. I felt like a sardine too, because this thing wasn’t made for a 300 pound, 6’7 werewolf. Both me and my brother have been getting taller these days, but that was because we had been aging. I looked about 25 now? It’s not something you can control, that’s up to the Lady. I still don’t look like someone with pups, but knowing my boy, he was driving Nancy and my brother nuts.
“Welcome Prince of Darkness, why have you come?” Said an older priest. That kind of stung, he made it sound like I was working with the Horned One or something. I ignored it and chose to stay respectful.
“It’s been a long time since I went to Church, Father of the Cloth.” I leaned back to try and get comfortable. “Forgive me Father for I have sinned. I was born a Sinner, the Son of the Pale Lady and the Grandson of the King of my people. I neglected my duties. I have not taken life without reason… but I have been selfish, slothful, and reckless with my life, living under the rule of my brother instead of ruling myself… it suffocates my wolf. He desires to live his birthright, but if I leave the Crown Prince will undoubtably lose his mind, as he did all those years ago….” I felt compelled to tell this man this… this Box was magic.
“It is my fault he was this way. It is my fault that countless lives of wolves and human men were slaughtered for no reason. If I had never given my wolf a taste of power, I would not have left, compelled to taste more of it…. and he would have had someone to stop him. I am the reason you came to be stationed here, because of my actions, I caused the Crown Prince to behave as he did.” I shed bitter tears, but I did not sniffle. I came to JUST get holy water, not confess my darkest secrets with an old man I don’t know.
I hate this place.
“We all choose our own paths in life. This thing your brother had done over 200 years ago was no fault of your own, young one. He should have been strong enough to accept that you would leave, or that even now you may. You are free to live your birthright, though, I appreciate that you don’t. Your actions have saved more than have been lost, and you should be proud. It’s why The Night Daughter recognized your actions. You have a pure heart Connor. Do not allow yourself to be unhappy, for your soul is a joyous one. I’m proud of you, my boy.” He said quietly, and calmly. His words soothed my soul, and his voice was like butterscotch.
Wait a minute.
“How do you know my name and the fuck I’m talking about old man?” I questioned, but he was gone, and in his place was a gallon jug of holy water.
My forehead also burned a little bit, but it went away as quickly as it came. I took this as my cue to leave and I got into my car, trying not to speed off. I wiped my face with a rag I keep in the glove compartment, and I noticed that my roots on either side of my skunky stripe were blonde. Great. My hair is making me an old man. What’s the point of working out and being hot for Nanners if when she sees my hair, she thinks of me as an old geezer? Ugh!
I got two buckets of chicken from JFC before pulling up to Jerold’s 2 story brick house that had a balcony. I expected a castle because he was a King, but I guess that would be in another part of the country, or maybe even on another continent altogether. I wondered where it was now, but I would ask later. I wanted to get into the house and share with them before it got cold.
Noah coughed like he had the flu, and his neck was dark purple where he got bit. It was because he died and was human, immortal or not. He was too healthy now to become a blood sucker, but the venom in his blood wanted to turn him.
The witches magic and my brother’s blood still coursed through his veins, which tried to combat the shit, like a tug-O-war over his body. The wolf’s blood, witches’ magic, and vampire’s bite were all from pureblooded, highborn members, so it was only natural. If he wasn’t immortal, he would be dead. Not anything supernatural, just in a grave from all the conflicting shit going on.
“I brought chicken!” I said happily, but Jerold legitimately snarled at me.
“Get the fuck out of here smelling like that.” He growled, but I had no idea what he was talking about.
“I just brought holy water to help out the pipsqueak. I could take a shower….” I said submissively. I cannot challenge a king. That would be suicide.
He took a deep breath. “No… sorry, you just smell like a priest.” He said with a little anger. “Nothing against them, but last time I encountered them, they rallied humans against me and stole my tail.” He said bitterly. I held in a laugh, because I didn’t think it was possible for them to had done such a thing but whatever. He had it back now.
“Thanks Connor, and I’m fine!” He coughed, but I saw he had very small fangs. It wasn’t enough to do anything with, but that he was getting them meant I needed to pour him a glass of the stuff and put a wet bandage on his neck.
Jerold helped, and we shared human food together until it was time to get Mini from school. It was interesting to see that Jerold could strip the meat off the bone with one bite. It actually made me uncomfortable, and I was the predator.
It’s hard to imagine him turning into a bull man seeing him eat like that, and have fangs too. I Volunteered to get her, as she went to a human school, and I thought maybe she wouldn’t mind the ride home from someone else. I also wanted to get out of the hostile aura of my friend, who was over protective of his little mate. I could understand that though. I got into my truck thinking about this, and looked again at my weird ass stripe I was going to get soon. Damnit.
The drive was only 5 minutes, but she didn’t recognize my car. I should have taken one of theirs, but I wasn’t thinking. I rolled down the car window. “Hey Mini I’m here to pick you up, and take you home.” I Yelled, hoping she wouldn’t freak out. Thankfully she didn’t. She was scared, but quiet and got into the front seat.
“You smell safe.” She said quietly.
“Thanks, I went to church to help your daddy Noah get better.” I said with a small smile.
“Really?” She asked, nearly bouncing in the seat.
“Yup, but I’m going to warn you, never go there or near a priest, they’re really dangerous.” I told her honestly.
She looked at me confused.
“They’re dangerous because they kill anyone that isn’t human…. But since I’m a prince they leave me alone.” I told her, and she nodded.
“Ok…” She said shyly. I was sorry that I scared her, but I didn’t want her to get burned at the stake either. That’s what they did to those who broke the peace, or venture into their den. It was their law given right. She sat there quietly and I let her out the car when she was home.
She ran to the door, and she melted my heart when she hugged Jerold. He growled at her softly in wolf, welcoming her home. She snuggled into him, and she hugged Noah, who was asleep. She didn’t know the difference, but I could smell it. He was getting worse. He wasn’t going to die… but I felt bad for him. He breathed heavy breaths and refused to allow Jerold to move him.
I made it up in my mind that I wouldn’t leave and I stayed in the living room, and kept Mini occupied until it was time for her to go to bed. She reminded me of Izzy, but a shy version. She always seemed to ask for permission for things, and she was definitely afraid of me. I could hear her little mind buzz, she wanted to play with Jerold… but with Noah in limbo, he had to tend to him.
It was a school night, so I put her to bed at 9 for him, and I came downstairs to see that Noah’s heart had slowed. Too slow for a human. “I could give him my blood.” I offered. Jerold nodded, because his would have been way too strong for Noah to handle. It would have been like putting jet fuel into a regular car.
I bit my wrist and let him drink, and some color came back into his face. I had looked up how to turn mortals, and he would have to drink a lot to get to that point, so this was fine. He drank until he went to sleep, but I was unhappy. Very unhappy.
I didn’t like that he was still unwell, but with another glass of pure holy water, he got sick again. It was purging everything, leaving him weak, but since I kept giving him my blood throughout the night, mine was soon the only supernatural substance left. It left him with small wolf’s fangs, but he would be fine. He was all human still after all. To another human, it would look like he was just blessed with ever so slightly longer canines than the average mortal.
But what mattered most was that he was still 100% human.
I knew this was important to him, as he had been an officer for over 85 years now. If he wanted to be supernatural, there were countless opportunities for him to be as such. There was no need to have his choice taken from him.
