Chapter 82
Kaiden
“We have taken no life upon arriving here.” He said flatly springing me from my inner argument, I could tell he was speaking the truth, though the way he said it, implied that it won’t be for long.
“Who are you to make such bold accusations of the Church?” Demanded one.
“Kaiden the Charred One, Crown Prince of Wolves, and you would harass my daughter, little brother, and my pack.” I say firmly.
The leader put on some reading glasses, pulled out the files and passed it around, seeing the official seals. They talked hushed amongst themselves, not realizing that I would hear.
“This is not forged Father Skyler.” Mumbled one.
“She is adopted by one of the Kings, breaking the treaty would have us Excommunicated.” Whispered one.
“We were assigned here for a reason. The Holy Seat does not make mistakes…. Yet he has to be the evil that they spoke of… the girl felt as innocent as a baptized babe… but I can see the darkness radiate off him.” Said the one they called Father Skylar. They all glanced my way and agreed.
They all looked in the box, and their leader’s face turned pale. “A Warning of War.” He mumbled, putting it down slowly.
“I have not cut my hair in over 200 years.” I said with a growl. “I rule these lands. None transgress the laws here without fear of punishment from me.” My eyes flash red, they need to hurry up before I have to fight my wolf.
“Enough. We will not be to blame for the treaty being broken. Go with your life and this warning: return here again, and you will never leave this place.” Father Skyler grumbled.
“What of the safety of my pack and pup?” I ask, getting Heidi’s paperwork back from the priest that led me down there.
“We didn’t know someone of …. Royal lineage would be here, or the source of the ancient evil. You all are beyond our jurisdiction.” He said disappointed.
I put the files under my arms, and faced the stairs to leave, but before I did, I had one last thing to say. “If you would have come just 3 years earlier, all of you would be dead, and this place would be ash.” And with that, I left.
/Why did we not kill them? Why did you shut me out? Growled Rakaam. He did not understand politics….
/If I killed them, their pack would come after the pups in retaliation. Their pack is bigger than ours./ I try to explain. He growled.
/I do not like this Kaiden. I do not trust the humans…./ He growled. He was unconvinced, but by the time I finished bickering with him, we were almost home. The sun was already peeping and I knew that I would get no rest. As soon as I walked through the door, I saw Heidi was the only one awake.
She was playing with all her herbs, writing what they do on the tops of all of them with a plastic labeler. She hadn’t noticed me yet, until I was almost in the dining room. She looked a bit confused scrunching her eyebrows. “…. Where did you go?” she asked staring at my suit.
“To church.” I said casually, sitting at the dining room table with her, and touching all her shit. There were so many little common spices that apparently did things in potions. She had a small notebook and was trying to organize all what she bought the day before. the corked vials she had on the table looked to be of all different colors, though one stood out.
“What’s this one do?” I opened that one out of curiosity. The black potion spewed purple vapors, that smelled kind of like licorice.
“DAD NO” She screamed, trying to stop me from sticking my nose in the bottle. I got so sleepy that my head slammed on the table.
-----Connor-----
I was carelessly sleeping minding my own business, until I heard a loud smack. It sounded like something hit wood with the force of a large male. I rolled out of bed, wondering what was happening downstairs. I didn’t hear growling or the warriors, so it wasn’t a scuffle, but Titus wouldn’t leave me alone. The moment I opened my door, Kaiden’s blood wafted into my nose. It wasn’t much, just a few drops, but I was definitely interested now.
I walked down the stairs to see Heidi freaking out, hands wrapped around her knees next to him, so I knew she was probably tapped out in the explanation department. She reminded me of the first day I saw her, and it kind of broke my heart.
Kaiden was red eyed staring at nothing, K.O’ed on the floor, and a very small pool of blood had come out his nose. Shit. I also looked around, and saw Heidi’s magic stuff on the table, but there was no telling what happened. Most likely he was messing with her shit, she would never ask him, she was too shy for that.
“Peppercorn, do you think you can calm down for me, and tell me what Kaiden did?” I ask quietly.
She didn’t speak, but she did at least try to calm herself. I closed my brother’s eyes, and picked him up, and took him to his room to give her some time.
The Luna was already up, worried out her mind as soon as she saw me. “What happened?!” She whisper yelled.
“Only Heidi knows, but since she’s freaking out, I can only guess that he got into her magic supplies.” I say, putting him on their bed, and he lost his form, sleeping belly up. This is getting serious, I thought to myself.
/The pup must talk./ Demanded Titus, I ignored, if we scare her, she won’t be able to say anything.
I went downstairs to see she had not left her spot, but she was calmer. “He told me he went to church, then put his nose into a sleeping potion. I was just making the ones in my new book… I didn’t know it would work that well….” She said quietly.
“Does it have an antidote?” I ask, bending down to pat her on the back.
“…Time… it said 48 hours.” She said looking at the floor.
Shit.
“Well in the meantime, clean the table off and we’ll watch him.” I told her calmly, I sighed internally, I would have to be Alpha today, and I wouldn’t leave the packhouse if I could help it. He might wake up in a weird state, or need to be subdued.
She started cleaning up, and I went into my office with the book she had used. I sent a picture of it to gram-gram, I figured maybe she would know of what to do better than we could. She was the one who taught her after all.
Gram-gram told me that black chamomile flower was harmless, but ‘it didn’t ‘play nice’ with other herbs. She basically gave me a clear warning not to mess with him, and to just let it run its course. All he was doing was sleeping, the pack wasn’t in danger, and time had slipped me by.
It was already noon, and there was only paperwork, and the occasional play fighting of the pups, or sparring of the warriors outside to hear. It was Sunday; mostly everyone was off on the weekends. All I had to do was pretend that everything was normal. No one had asked me about Alpha yet, and Kaiden probably needed the off time anyway. Of all the members in the pack, we take off the least. There were some nights where we were up all night, with no guarantee of rest later.
There was also the fact that he cut his hair. What was he doing at the church and did it work? Those were answers only he could know. Damn, the pack was running smoothly until all this mess, I thought to myself.
I got a phone call transferred from the Alpha office; it was an advisor from the council.
“Beta Connor here.” I say respectfully.
“This is Advisor Alpha Philip; I was hoping to speak with your Alpha regarding the Rogues.” He said calmly, though his voice held authority. This guy sounded like he was more than just a small-time council member. Did they assign our pack with ancients or something to make sure we were in line? I wondered that silently.
“I’m standing Alpha while he’s on a small vacation.” I say calmly.
“Ah, well Alpha Frank must receive the fugitives for punishment.” He said flatly.
“Elliot left because his mate was sick and with pup. Alpha Frank wanted to force him to abandon her to continue to serve him.” I growl, unsuccessful in holding it in.
The line was silent. “He did not mention this.” He growled. There was silence on the line again, but this time I could hear faint chatter in the background. “Technically, he left his post, so if Frank wishes to punish him, he can.” Said Phillip with a sigh of frustration.
“I’ll fight him for them. I challenge him.” I growl.
“For only the two wolves, not the whole pack?” He questioned. This pack was just too far out the way to want. It would separate me from my littermates. This was out of the question.
“No, just these members and anyone else who wants out.” I say with conviction.
“Well, if that’s the case, I expect to see you in about 45 minutes. No shifting, no killing since it’s a dispute settlement.” He said with authority, and we ended the call with each other.
