Book 2 Chapter 9
Heidi
“They forgot to feed me again.” I said with a sigh. I looked out my cell window to see that the moon and sky was a dark crimson. It seemed the Horned One and the Lady Moon were dancing in the night, while their children ran amuck.
I was in the cellar, where I was to sleep at night, and work ‘like a dog’ in the day. I had done a bad thing by talking back to the High Crone yesterday… and now I was awaiting punishment. She coughed horridly coming down the stairs, with her pet Agatha walking behind her, giggling like she always does. She was only a year younger than me, and she was 6.
Oh no… I remember this memory.
“You really fucked up this time mutt.” She sang, and she held a hot rod in her hands.
She was slapped across the face coldly by her mother, who then patted her head. “You would do well to keep your mouth shut and speak when acknowledged with that potty mouth. What will the good Lords of the Coven think if they heard.” She hissed.
“Yes Mo-High Crone.” She said with respect.
“Open the cage.” She sneered, giving her the keys. Agatha hesitated, but she opened it all the same.
“Strike her.” She commanded.
“What?” She asked. She had only accompanied, but never joined in any of my formal punishments until now.
“My bones are tired, beat the dog, until she whines like one.”
“All I did was beg them to leave me alone….” I mumbled. I was slapped.
“You will be silent dog! You dare be born in this house. The Only half breed since the fall of Constantinople, yet you have the Audacity to complain! I should have you Hung! Show her her place, or you will join her!” She hissed, slamming her cane on the floor. I didn’t even notice it until now… she used that too sometimes.
Agatha took two steps forward, and she shook, and so did I. I backed into the back of the corner, and I didn’t have to pee anymore. The High Crone laughed a cackle that I can’t ever forget. The stone was cold against my back, and I begged them to leave me alone. I had no powers. I was not pureblood. I had no wolf. I was 7.
“Heidi!!” Screamed John shaking me awake.
“I’m sorry.” I whispered. I didn’t know where I was, the lights were too bright, my eyes had to adjust.
“Sorry for what?” He demanded, and I didn’t want to think about it. I shook my head and cried into his chest. I thought I forgot about that day. Everything was my fault, no one could be questioned, and I was to be punished for even the slightest things. I had wanted to be left alone from them using me for their spell practice. They didn’t care that I was covered in hexes and burns… and I was beaten for asking them to stop.
“I don’t know….” I lied. He pursed his lips, knowing that I was lying, but it freaked me out that I made him mad too. He smelled angry, and I didn’t want to upset him more.
“I won’t make you tell me, but I am here.” He said with a small frown. He held me gently, and I felt like crying more, but I held it in. He was a warrior, and I figured he wouldn’t want me to be a baby.
“I’ll be ok, you can go to work John.” I told him, and he licked my mark. I felt a rush of comfort and safety through our connection.
“Heidi you can cry on me you know… it isn’t like you haven’t before.” He said with a small smile. And I let myself rest my head on his lap. He didn’t move, and he rubbed my back in little circles. “This is my fault for turning off the light… I didn’t know.” He said soothingly.
“No… the nightmare was going to happen…. the lights are on to protect me from other witches.” I mumbled. I was scared they would find me and make me go back with them… I wasn’t as strong as them… He picked me up as if I weighed nothing and held me. It sent sparks through me, as I could feel his love and concern in our bond.
“Then I will protect you. You are mine and I am yours. To take you, to force you, even the suggestion of separating us breaks the laws of all the kings, even theirs. You are safe now Heidi.” He said holding me tighter. “You are safe here and no one is going to hurt you anymore. And you don’t have to submit to me like you’re beneath me….” he said kissing my forehead gently.
I wished I could believe him, but deep down I knew that they were still out there and hateful… I pray to the Lady something; anything happens to them to force them to change. I know they won’t on their own.
He growled at me, smelling my hair and it made it stand up on end. I didn’t understand wolf as well as I should… and his growl was powerful. He will not hurt us. Protested Sparkle, and she was right, I took a deep breath and looked up at my mate. He looked sad, but he quickly washed the pained look off his face.
“I’m still rattled from my dream.” I told him quietly. I was also rattled from hearing him growl so loud, but I left that out. He sounded and smelled different than yesterday. This was the second time I noticed that. He was getting stronger. He smelled as strong as a weak Alpha… I’m only a little stronger than an Omega. But he was also my best friend. He protected me, and helped me whenever I needed. Would he change that he was getting stronger? Alphas can be really aggressive. I looked down, and felt dread in my stomach.
“I know, and I would never hurt you. I swear this.” He said, kissing me on the forehead. “Sparkle is a snitch.” He said with a small smile. He got up and popped his neck and rolled his shoulders. He also popped all his back and even his toes. He reached his hand out to me, and I hesitantly took it.
We walked down the stairs holding hands. I would love my mate; I refuse to let my past control me. Fearing him would be exactly what they would want. That I was happier now, and that I wasn’t under someone’s foot being submissive would make their blood boil. Downstairs there were whistles and wolves were joyous.
“Calm down guys.” Chuckled John waving at the warriors and they waved back. Now that everyone knew that he didn’t betray dad, they were more welcoming to him.
“Come have some coffee with us.” Said Warrior McDaniel with a smile. He and his mate Lilly were at the table, and she had made him waffles and eggs with bacon, while she opted for a slice of nearly raw meat. Alpha Ron sat on the other side of the table with his Luna. They too had nearly raw food. I remembered that that was something many pureblooded wolves went through. They don’t like normal food, but I had my breakfast just fine. I looked at John nearly inhale his waffle, and I wondered would he get like that one day. There was a good chance that maybe he would.
“Son slow down, there’s plenty.” Said Luna Aemi happily. She seemed to be very content on hugging him any chance she got, and he didn’t seem to mind. However, Hanna did. She looked like she wanted to say something. She looked like she was going to, but Assistant Gamma’s hand squeezed her shoulder a little bit. Her tenseness relaxed, and I didn’t know if I should console them or not. Was it my place? I would make it worse. Yup, it was settled in my mind that I would make it more awkward.
“I would like to go on patrol with you son, and see what his highness taught you.” Said Alpha Ron suddenly.
“Only if my mate promises she will be ok while I’m gone.” He said sternly, glancing my way. His gaze was intense, and I had to look away after a moment. He patted my head. “The floor must be pretty interesting huh?” He said with a smile in his voice.
“I’ll be ok.” I tried to sound confident, but it came out almost like a whisper.
“That doesn’t sound very convincing…. but if I leave you hear with my sister, would you be ok with that? I know you two don’t-” He stopped himself from talking. Alpha Ron narrowed his eyes at us, then he glared at Jesse…. It made my hair stand up. I hope she didn’t get in trouble just now.
“I could take her shopping with Warrior McDaniel.” She blurted shyly with a smile, but I could tell that she was as freaked out as I was.
“I’ll go as well.” Said John’s mother. Alpha Ron hummed, scratching his chin.
“No, if they are to go out, I would prefer you all to leave with one of my warriors. Warrior Cruise, see to their shopping needs.” Said Alpha Ron, and a man I hadn’t seen until this moment just seemed to appear in the living room.
“My lady,” He said with a small bow. I waved at him weirdly, and I remembered I was supposed to nod my head. Lady dang it….
