Her yellow-hazel eyes were red now. She was only 3 feet tall, yet she spoke the truth. But I would not have her spoiled. “No unicorn.” I commanded. It was final. I crossed my arms at my desk.
She let a single tear fall from her cheek, dropping to the hardwood floor. My eyes grew wide.
“Izzy don’t you dare!” I whisper yell in my Alpha voice. My little girl grinned like a mad man, and started crying real tears, screaming, and running away from me. I tried chasing her down the stairs, and she screamed louder, crying like I was going to hurt her. Grandfather roared, rattling the windows and walls of the packhouse.
“Daddy said he was going to spank me!” She squealed running to a confused babygirl, who’s eyes were now silver. I was being framed! Never had I ever done such a thing, but the air in the room changed anyway.
Fuck.
“He. Said. WHAT?!” Boomed my grandparents in unison. I tried to make a B line out the door, but was swiftly tackled to the ground by grandfather. His claws dug into my back; his eyes were almost black they were so crimson and ablaze. He pinned my hands behind my back and squeezed, just enough to hurt, but I could feel the restraint in his death grip. There was no way I was getting out of this.
“I said no such thing! My pup is evil! Ahh!” He had begun to press his thumb in my back as a warning with his free hand, and it felt like it would break any moment. My daughter grinned behind her mother, but clung to her dress like she was terrified.
“You will not harm what is mine, boy.” He spat. With his thumb, he jabbed me in the kidney as a final warning. I snarled at the pain, and he growled, submitting pretty much everyone in the house…. including me. He got off me. I rolled on the floor on my back to catch my breath, and stared at the ceiling. No one came to see if I was ok. I was, but I swear it hurt more that I was given the cold shoulder.
“She’s not even 5 yet…” I pant. Her birthday was a week from now, yet here she was, already getting ‘grampy’ to assault me to no end. I thanked the Lady that Caleb was… a more quiet pup. He was 6 months younger nearly to the day, yet was already a foot taller than his big sister.
I look back to my grandparents, who still glared at me from the dining room area. Laying on the floor was about as submissive as it got, and I didn’t want to get mauled by gram-gram, whose eyes were still black. This was karma, I thought. Rakaam said nothing, he was still shocked that she pulled that stunt off better than I had a few years ago. And she figured it out all on her own too. I was almost proud, if not for my burning sides. They were here the rest of the week until her birthday, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they stayed until Caleb’s. I laid there still, listening for a chance to raise my head. Grandmother went back to cooking, and talked with all the warriors to see how good or bad of an Alpha I was.
Thankfully, I was because of babygirl and the little ones. They were my anchor, but now they knew the secret. Cry to grandmother or father and they will let you have your way, and punish the grownups with swift retribution. It took me a half hour to heal on the floor, and the wolves were getting concerned as to why I was there like that, slightly smelling of blood. But what was I to tell them, that I was framed by a four year old mastermind? The moment the attention was off me by the King, I left out the house. It would probably be the rest of the day before the bruises left me, but at least I wasn’t dead.
Izzy had no idea the power she had in her little hands. She had the most powerful living wolves at her fingertips. All she had to do was shed a tear, and this entire pack could be leveled in flames. I thanked the Lady that she didn’t fully understand that, and went to the coffee shop at the bottom of the hill with my phone. I don’t remember the name of the shop owner, only that he was still friends with babygirl; they would video chat from time to time.
“Alpha,” He bowed, he was crowded today, but when I came in, they were leaving. I held up my hand to stop them, there was no need to run away on my part… it would probably get me mauled by grandfather for being a bully too or something anyway if he caught wind.
“I just needed a breather, no one leave on my part.” I said with a small smile. I tried to come off as friendly, and I think it worked, as everyone relaxed. I got some black coffee, and got on my phone. Just because I wasn’t in my office didn’t mean that work would magically disappear. I was trying to organize the schools in both territories to get remodeled. It was just too far away a commute to combine them in the middle, but we did add a road to cut travel time in half, as some pack members did choose commute to work now anyway. The new wall and prison stopped all but the most stupid of daredevil, and the humans caught by us in our territory was reduced by 75%.
I mind linked Beta to bring me my laptop, and he came within 15 minutes, with a messenger bag on his shoulder. “There ya go brother, that’ll be $50.” He said with an evil smile.
The coffee shop got quiet. I sighed and rolled my eyes at him.
“This is a shake down.” I growl with a smile, thankful that I had my wallet in my back pocket… there was no love for me today. I handed him the money, and he gave me my laptop, the bastard.
“You’re lucky you didn’t finish payroll with Delta, or I wouldn’t have come at all.” He growled back with a smile, sitting across from me, pulling his laptop out his satchel.
“I can’t believe she learned how to pull that off so soon…” I grumble.
“Shook down by an almost 5 year old…” He laughed.
“The power of My Tiniest Horsey, Connor. She wants a unicorn… a REAL one, and I am NOT dealing with that.” I grumble, sipping my coffee. I had attracted attention to myself. “Do you know what Queen Sky would do to me? How the fuck am I supposed to break her little heart and tell her that they’re a kind of shifter?” I let my head fall on the table with a loud thud. They are a people, not a damn pet. Queen Sky would skin me. Hell, grandfather would probably help. Beta gave the $50 to the shopkeeper and ordered a double shot expresso. We hadn’t slept the night before, and we were running on E.
“Dude just rent her a damn horse, or do you want grandfather to actually hurt you? I heard you had to lay on the floor for like an hour.” He laughed loudly, I growled, shaking the windows.
“…Fine!” I sigh. This was the 2nd time in 24 hours I was attacked in my own home. I rented a cute white pony along with a bounce house and other kid friendly rides. One almost empty petty cash savings account, and an empty cup later, I organized the party for pretty much every pup in the pack’s dreams…. I just wondered how I would tell her that the pony wasn’t staying.
“Buy the horse.” The King commanded from behind me, making me nearly jump out my hide. He had Heidi, and an army of small pups with him; the little ones were holding his hand. Heidi stood next to him. She honestly loved when they came over, because they were the ones that gave her the confidence she needed.
“I will not repeat myself pup.” He said sternly.
“Lady Damnit.” I grumbled.
“Thank you Grampy!” Izzy squealed and hugged his leg. He smiled. Caleb stood quietly.
“Is there anything you want son?” I ask, genuinely concerned. I look at Caleb, who said nothing. He just looked at me. He had the temperament of grandfather.
“No.” He said quietly.
[The boy thinks of a small blue and red truck, that turns into an odd metal human? I am confused as to what this is.] Mind linked grandfather.
[That’s a Transformon grandfather. Thank you.] I link him back and set up his birthday. I think this was the only time in my life I was ever happy that grandfather can just read minds regardless of any mental walls. I just didn’t think to do it.
“Heidi, do you need anything?” I ask. She looks down, like I would say no. I saw grandfather frown, making me curious. What he does is automatic, it just comes with being so fucking old, but sometimes, like now, I would have to pry. I knew I shouldn’t have, but I read her mind.
She wanted to be with John. Her mate bond had finally started to solidify, but she didn’t understand what she was feeling. It was faint, like an extremely small crush, but soon she might want to be marked when she turns 18 in a year or so.
Damn.
That was something I couldn’t give, nor a conversation that I could have with her now, in public. But I could do the next best thing. I could be a father. If it’s one thing Eric taught me, it was that sometimes, just being there and positive for your pup helps. I would talk to her later, but for now, I would just reassure her that I was there for her.
“You are my daughter; if there is anything you need, just ask.” I mention. She nods. She was a good kid.
