Book 2: Chapter 12

John
After comforting my sister, I also linked her ‘friends’ and gave them a stern talk. I decided that I would have my sister’s number changed when we leave, because she didn’t know that they didn’t care. It was something that got under my skin, but I can’t change how they act. They have to do that on their own. I made my way back to my room after at least an hour of arguing with them. I was actually feeling tired from their nonsense.
I came back to see Heidi was reading out of a book that she had already packed. She was kicking her feet in the air while laying flat on her stomach in thin short pajamas…. I had to put Terracotta in a choke hold. I walked right up to her, and she didn’t notice me. I was tempted to touch her, but that would’ve probably freaked her out more than I intended.
“Short stuff, what are you reading?” I asked her and she slammed it closed.
“Nothing!” She screamed loudly, and I laughed, getting in bed. Her face heated up like a tomato, and I pulled her into my lap, flipping her around in one swift motion.
“Oh. If it’s ‘nothing’ let me see little mate.” I said, kissing her temple. I wanted to taste more of her, but she wasn’t ready for that yet. I could tell.
She looked at me hesitantly, and she timidly pulled the title away from her bosom. It read ‘Advanced Guide for Healing Herbs.’ She looked up at me as if she thought I would criticize her, but this was part of who she was. “That’s great Heidi!” I told her cheerfully. “Healers are respected no matter the culture.” I said, and she let out a breath that she was holding. She read about plants for about an hour, and I read along with her silently. I could never use it, but really just spending time with my mate was enough. She read quietly until she fell asleep, and I laid her down on a pillow. I put her things away and went to sleep next to her.
I think it was the best rest I ever had… but my dream woke me up. My eyes were wide with what I woke up to! Heidi was still asleep, and had no idea my sheets were now part of a tent that was hoisted high and proud for all to see since I left the door open, and the lights on. I had to still get used to that, since I sleep with the lights off, and door closed. I hopped in the shower. Soon it would be time to depart, and the last thing I wanted anyone to see was me at full mast in just boxers.
Lady Damnit.
I stood in the shower, which made it worse, because now Heidi’s scent was mixed in with the steam of the water. “John, are you ok in there?” She asked innocently. No! NO! NO! I panicked in my mind. I had every right to! She wasn’t ready for the other half of the ceremony. If she was, she would be the one to initiate it.
“I’m FINE just stay in there!” I yelled. Let me take her! Screamed my wolf, thrashing around in my head. She’s never seen us well... in this condition. She’s shy, even with a kiss. My wolf wanted her, and I yelled at him. Get your head out the gutter or I Will make the water cold as ice. I hissed at him. I also hissed outwardly at how aroused I was. I had never wanted her this bad. I had wanted her before, but not like This.
He made it worse. My Lady HOW could he have made me harder? I warned you, you little shit! I yelled at him.
I made the water cold. I yelped, and she ran into the bathroom, but she couldn’t see anything. The shower curtain saved me, and she slammed the door. “I didn’t see anything!” She squealed, running into the Gamma’s guest room. I could only assume she meant to check on me then shower too, because when I got out, I saw her purple towel and clothes all over my room floor. I chuckled picking them up.
She came back into the room taking my breath away. She wore a crimson pull over dress and black leggings. Her hair was in a messy bun, and she walked shyly to me looking down. “I’m ready.” She said sweetly, and I couldn’t help but hug her gently. I will miss this place, but with my mate it won’t be so bad.
“Alpha said he had something special for us on Charred side.” I told her, smelling her hair. It was coconut and honey. She always smelled like a dessert….
“John is there any reason why you licked me?” She asked a little concerned and I didn’t know I had done such a thing!
“Sorry!” I laughed, thumbing over her forehead. It was still a little wet. I glared at my wolf, who held a smug smile.
I took her hand, ignoring him, and walked with her downstairs. She was still timid, so I could only assume there was something bothering her, but I wouldn’t pry. If I couldn’t hear it, I wouldn’t force it. I walked downstairs to see that there were streamers and warriors, along with the Alpha’s family downstairs. There was allot of breakfast food, and I wondered how didn’t I notice it all.
“I know this is the second party, but I couldn’t just say goodbye to my little girl.” Said Alpha, who held Luna’s shoulder. The pups were in her arms asleep, along with the other pups in Beta and Gamma’s arms.
Heidi cracked a small smile and hugged them both. “It isn’t goodbye dad, it’s see you later.” She corrected and he patted her head.
“Alright peppercorn.” He said with a small smile. I never got why he called her that name, but she didn’t mind. He gave everyone a pet name, well the small pack members. About the most he called me was ‘Johnny boy.’
“John I want to talk to you.” Said Beta Connor seriously. It was weird, because I hardly ever seen the man serious, but I would go with him.
I followed him to the backyard, where Gamma’s mate was waiting. He was sitting on a small bench out there, having a cup of coffee in the early dawn’s light.
“You know you’re in danger the moment you leave the territory right?” Said Beta seriously. The Beta of dad’s pack was also here, but I didn’t want to really hear that. Not now… I knew that already. My brother is a sore loser.
“I heard that you little shit.” Beta Connor slapped me on the back of the head. “Not your brother. The council itself. Don’t trust anyone.” He said seriously.
“…. Can you tell me why?” I asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Well, the Third Seat isn’t the real chair holder. The real chairholder I met by chance. His name was Alpha Phillip. The man’s as old as your father, but Brutus is only about as strong as .. hmm…. By smell I’d say me before I got blessed by the Lady.” He said touching his white hairs. It was the only thing that made him look different from Alpha.
“He must have snaked his way into the court?” I asked.
“Bingo, I heard through Kaiden that Phillip’s mate is human. Your mate is half witch. That gives her some protection, but her wolf is only as strong as a fresh turned Omega. You better be careful with my niece.” He said, pointing a clawed finger in my chest. It made my wolf submit in my mind, because as chill as Beta Connor is, his wolf is absolutely fucking crazy.
“I heard that too!” He chuckled ruffling my hair, and I wanted to growl at him for it. “You need to have a better wall built up. Here take this.” He gave me a small black stone. “It’s black tourmaline. It protects from magic and psychic attacks… aka prying.” He said showing a small necklace around his chest. It was heart shaped. “A gift from peppercorn. Knowing her that dog tag she gave you has anti curse wards on it.” He said with a smile, and I took it off, and put the small square pendant on with the dog tags.
“How do I use it?” I asked.
“Think of shielding yourself. My brother should have given her one by now too.” He said, scratching his chin.
“Why hasn’t the King killed him?” I asked. Beta Scoffed.
“Technically, Brutus has broken no laws, also this is done to protect Phillip’s mortal mate. Brutus has about half the odd seats at his command, so with him dead, and an honest man in that chair, they will plot to remove him.” He growled.
There were 13 seats, and 5 were odd…. So seats 3,5, and 7 were corrupt. This worried me, because they all held high numbers in the court. Also, they probably all have serious connections. This wasn’t something to take lightly, nor assume I could take them. I would have to be smart…. and probably align myself with the even seats. I hate politics, but these guys have been playing this game since man first lived in villages.
“They plot like rats. I remember when I was first mated to Shelly, they tried assassinating me, but the joke was on them, Omegas aren’t allergic to silver or wolf’s bane. Can’t weaken an already weak, practically dead wolf.” He said dryly.
“I didn’t know that… I’m sorry.” I told him but he shook his head.
“Dormant wolves are protected by the Lady. Because we have no power, some of us are immune. Well true Omegas, like me. Some people just have wolves too weak to shift.” He said casually. That sounded tough… I didn’t know what I would do without my wolf.
