Book 2: Chapter 91
Heidi
John, Ron, Beta Isaac, and Beta Dion were out on a hunting raid. It was because of what I saw earlier, and for it I needed to know more. I looked through the ball while Gulteer spoke high demonic with Rahrraam and Zeh’Kahrraam… who was pretty much double the size of my demon. Even though they both at the moment were human formed, you could tell who was the stronger of the two. I could kind of understand the incantation he wove on both familiars, but I was tired…. I needed a break. It was midnight, but I no longer saw the leader’s son in their base. They too seemed to be preparing for war… I could see more guns and ammo. I found out their address was still the same from when Ann was there, and that made the viewing easier, and for it I was rewarded with more information on them.
Though now I could tell that something was happening. Someone was coming into the office. “Sir, Ben’s not at the Blonde Calf, or the club. He wasn’t on patrol either.” Said a man who I’d seen in and out of the leader’s office the entire day. He was their lieutenant.
“I meant what I said. Don’t let him back in this office. If he and his men want to be fools, let um…. I’ve been feeling uneasy since this morning.” He said lighting a cigarette.
“I bet they’re trying to find our hideout.” Said a woman coming in with a plate of food for their leader. She was just as old as he was by the look of it.
“Thank you Gran.” He said kissing her on the cheek, and she left out.
“Sir… also I used the FindMyPhone app to locate your grandson’s phone.” The lieutenant said putting a blurred green something to the cigarette. I didn’t know what it was, but trying to make the image clear hurt my head.
“Remove yourself Heidi. That’s sage.” Said Gulteer. “He’s caught onto your presence.”
“Yes sir.” I told him, but he shook his head.
“You may call me ‘grandfather’ little one. It is your right as much as Hellinia’s or my other witchlings.” He said taking his cane and putting it in the fire, but it didn’t burn. Instead, it got red hot, and the symbol of the Horned One appeared on its end.
“Yes grandfather…. What’s that for?” I asked. A little sheepishly.
“Do not be ashamed that you don’t know what I’m doing.” He chuckled. “I’m rearranging the spells and visage forms I will use. The Serpent form was a gift, and fire energy is a fast way to recharge the staff without using the souls we’re about to eat.” He said summoning the kettle.
“….we?” I asked.
“Yes We, though you’re a babe, and as such I’ll only give you what I’ve steeped out of them.” He said with a smile smelling the steam.
It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. To the wolves, I don’t think they could smell souls… but I could. It was unnerving to know that even that wasn’t safe from someone like him. “… Is there any reason you’re torturing them though?” I asked and he smiled.
“Well, as you young ones say, yes and no. It doesn’t make a sinner’s soul any more tender, but it does make it akin to baby’s mash for You. I’ve steeped them as tea for you, since I know you would be against using your body as a conduit for teleporting them to hell” He said stirring it with his staff that was still red hot. I could hear them scream from such an act, and I refused the bowl that was presented to me. “That should just about do it. The rest will be mine.” He said putting a ladle he’d summed from nowhere into the pot, and I could see him sip two red orbs into his mouth.
“I… I can’t eat that.” I said looking at the raw energy in the bowl. He didn’t put the souls in the bowl… but the glowing red, clear liquid smelled like beef stew. I sat it down by the fire, and Zeh’Kahrraam shook his head, saying something in a language I didn’t understand.
He placed it in my hands, after shooting him a glare. “You will need it for what’s to come.” He said in a soothing way. “You use energy you do not replenish; you hesitate to begin this aspect of your journey. It will not change you, and it isn’t something that you will crave as a drug… such as flesh. I wouldn’t do that to you… but never eat their raw.” He warned. “Unless you wish to become an addict.”
“I still don’t want this.” I said hearing my stomach growl…. I had eaten but this fed the soul, not the body. I was starving for energy after looking through the ball… and he was giving me a battery to recharge myself.
“I will not repeat myself little one. I share this with you and my wife… She has had her portion. She too does not like souls, so instead both of you have split the energy created … You need yours too. Take heed to someone who has seen the future.” He said taking a spoon and putting it to my lips after dipping it in my bowl.
“…. what will happen if I don’t take it?” I asked, and he debated on telling me.
“…. A Future filled with much sorrow… and even more regret.” I knew what he meant when he said it…. Something was probably going to happen to John.
“Then… for my mate’s sake…” I said taking a sip.
“And yours as well. I will not speak of what I saw, but don’t obsess over the what if. It is why you never speak of the future, unless the Master sends you a warning as he did with me.” He said pressing the staff to the bowl to my lips, arching it up to encourage me to get on with it…. “I need to make you one of these…. But I know you won’t have the stomach to maintain it. Not yet.” He chuckled, but I was too distracted by the effects of his brew…
“Flavor is from their bloodline. Hunters always taste like some homemade stew or another with onion. It’s why their bodies carry the scent of onion too,”
As I drank the thick savory liquid that tasted of roasted beef…. I saw visions of the things they’d done to supernatural creatures…. They killed many innocents…. To get an Alpha pelt, you have to kill his pack, and he was responsible for finding 5 in his lifetime…. 7 including ours. They also weren’t hesitant to get their hands dirty either…. Hundreds of wolves have died because of them, in fire and silver…. I could understand why Gulteer had no issue being so cruel.
How terrible a person would someone be to kill at least 300 people for an item worth a few thousand dollars…...? They looted the empty packs afterwards too… they saw us as animals. They culled us like cattle…. And stole from the dead. I know wolves aren’t innocent either, and some of those packs got found because of a wolf breaking the law… but not all wolves in the entire pack should die for the one….
“Now you see….” He said quietly. “They’ve pillaged this country from coast to coast with this area being their homeland. They think themselves crusaders, but honestly, they are more like pirates… traveling city to city, creating gallons of tears, blood, and immeasurable amounts of pain. Of all the humans I’ve done this to, and you will, never hesitate for sinners. If they’re terrible enough to fit in this pot, then they’ve done something enough to deserve this fate.”
“I understand…” I said feeling full of energy. I felt like I could run a marathon, but there was still a somber quietness that I held. Sinner or not, it was still a life, one that I didn’t take, but I still benefited from.
“Zeh’Kahrraam was right.” He said with a light smile.
“That I’m soft hearted?” I guessed, seeing the massive man who sat next to Gulteer nod.
“It is not a bad thing, but you will have to be strong. To show weakness is to Be weakness. The wolves understand this, as do most magical creatures, but this is Especially true for us. Fear makes demons hungry… pain is their candy. You have seen only the Master’s good side. I pray you never know the receiving end of his wrath…”
“Have you?” I asked and he nodded his head.
“Once, for doing him a favor….. Hold on, I’ll ask if I am allowed to speak of such things. War stories are fun, especially before battle. The Hunters will be here before sunrise.” He said as if everyone within earshot knew that.
