Book 2 Chapter 22
John
How…. How could she think so little of herself? She was my true mate…. but honestly… honestly, I loved her so much I knew that I would have made her my mark mate if she wasn’t. I don’t care what anyone wants from me if she isn’t there…I accidently let out a soft whine, and she stroked my hair.
“I’m sorry.” She whispered kissing the top of my head.
“Don’t be. You’re scared of what the High Council will do now that you’re on it. There’s a difference from before. Before you were just the King’s adopted granddaughter…. now you are the Second Luna’s Heir. Now what you say holds weight… now what we do matters, and there will be wolves who do not like it. I already know there will be some who wish to replace me with my brother because he is older…. And because he’s corrupted. Don’t apologize for being afraid.” I told her honestly and she nodded.
I let her sit between me and Garnet, as he was already a marked man. I could see it. He sat with a small smile, looking in the direction of Ann’s room, worried but much calmer. His eyes were only for her, though he could make no official move on her yet. Not until the Goddess lifted the curse she placed on him. Maybe I would pray for him, since she seemed to consistently grant them….
My mate however was in destress right now, thinking that I would mark another for the sake of my political future. I internally sighed, Terracotta was livid, ready to kill whoever it was that told her this, but we both knew that was her own original thought…. How was someone so sweet mistreated so badly… she didn’t even think she was worthy enough to be my mate. What do you tell someone like that?
“I smell your stress John, don’t worry about me.” She said more confidently than I thought she would, and I relaxed a little… maybe I was overreacting.
“Ok… but if I think you’re freaking out, I’m taking you home tomorrow.” I warned her gently. I kissed her softly, and I sat her down. It was early, so I figured we could stay in the rest of the day together. Technically, I was supposed to put my scent around the territory with my father today, but we could tomorrow.
I let her sit at the table with Garnet, and made her something to eat. I was making grilled cheese with fried ham, one of her favorites, and there was a knock at the door.
“I got it.” Said Garnet. His calm demeanor became serious. It was almost as if he could flip a switch and change.
“Good Afternoon Garnet.” Said my Adopted father.
“Clan Chief.” He said with a bow. That blew my mind a little, but it made since. Who better than to raise me than one of his best spies.
“I gave that title to my little brother, please, it’s just Xavier now.” He chuckled, patting him on the back and he flinched a little.
“No one in the clan recognizes him as chief, that you breathe sir. It is law.” He said formally.
“If I hold my breath, does that count then?” He chuckled, walking in, and I didn’t even notice my adopted mom with him. And Jesse too, though she looked ashamed for some reason. She was told to make a scene, but I hoped she didn’t go overboard.
Garnet seemed to change back to his happy self and laughed, sitting down at the table. I went on ahead and got out more ham and cheese, while Garnet got himself and Xavier beers. He got everyone else canned sodas. I didn’t really care for the taste of alcohol, neither did my adopted mom. Heidi was too shy, and I don’t think I would let her anyway. I didn’t know how it would affect her if she got drunk.
“How was your first day, your grace?” Asked my adopted mother. It still felt weird having them call me that.
“Can you guys please just call me John?” I complained and they both smiled a bit.
“We figured it would help you acclimate sooner but if you insist, we can only do so in private.” He told me honestly, and I accepted that. It would have to do. I served everyone, and sat down at the head of the table, which was also weird. That was the place where Derrick would sit, since Alpha never ate at Crimson. I really was an Assistant Alpha, stronger than almost everyone in the room… it felt unreal. It blew up my wolf’s head a bit, but I could always spar with father or Garnet if I needed to.
“I can live with that… it was fine…. Father tested us, but he said we needed more training.” I ate some ham, drinking a bit of soda.
“Ah yes, and Jesse went a little overboard, causing Heidi to lose control of her magic.” Said Xavier, shooting my sister a glare.
“Really.” I said, glaring at her as well. I didn’t like that the report said that there was a serge of magic, but I thought it was because she usually does that when she wakes up….. I didn’t know my adopted sister was the cause of it.
Garnet’s eyes changed a strange purple red. He looked at me, waiting for a command. His wolf leaned back in his chair, but said nothing.
“I was just doing what alpha told me.” She lied in the sweetest voice she could.
“Lies.” Said Garnet’s wolf.
“Fine. I went over the top a little, she’s fine.” She grumbled, and I got up, and flicked her on the back of the ear.
“Ow! You turd!” She yelled, and I flicked her one more time.
“Jesse, oh my fucking Lady, you’re Blessed you’re my little sister.” I growled. “That report said that there was a fatal amount of magic sensed in the area. She would have accidently Killed you, because you’re still holding onto a petty grudge! Ugh!” I pulled my braid, half ready to claw my table.
“She’s just so insufferable! Weak! You know I’m right. Every royal I ever met would agree if she was Anyone Else! UGH!” She snarled, slamming her fist on the table standing up, and my adopted father did as well.
“Jesse that’s Enough!” He growled, and she sat down with crossed arms.
“I’m right. I’m right and all of you know it.” she hissed.
“And if you were any other she wolf, I would have you on the post for this.” I hissed back. She looked hurt, but growled at me. I growled back. She was a freaking walking contradiction. If she’d been any other she wolf growling at me, after admitting she purposefully was trying to hurt my mate, I’d have lost it.
“If I were not bound to the commands of his majesty, you would be dead little girl.” Said Garnet’s wolf calmly, but coldly. “Your point has some merit, but you are wrong. Her grace Is higher. That is your problem. I am strongest in this room, yet I have no problem kneeling to my Elder and my Prince. The issue is You. If you do not like it, leave the pack, and go to ShadowMoon, before you get yourself banished.” He said calmly. He sounded as if he had thought about everything he was going to say before he said it.
“She isn’t a Shadow, and never will be.” Hissed her father.
“If she is banished by any of their highnesses, she will forever be a Rouge. No one can save her then.” He said casually. “And I will enjoy hunting her.”
“That’s not going to happen.” Hissed her mother
“Then she can mate a worthy male. He will take care of her. She is the Chief Elder’s daughter; she can choose whom she pleases.” He said dismissively. He was right. She had some status after all, but even so, she was still a servant here. Here it didn’t matter what her rank was, she wasn’t in the royal court, so here she would kneel to someone she didn’t like.
“I don’t want to just be some housewife!” She yelled, and Heidi snarled.
“Then Stop acting like a bitch! Everyone here is trying Jesse, except YOU. Do you think I Want to be a Luna, when even pups are stronger than me?! Do you think I want to be around all these powerful old wolves all the time, and at any moment, I could get killed?! I know I’m weak! I know all anyone here has to do is flick their fucking wrist, and I’m gone before I could heal the damage. I’m tired of you always playing the victim when you do wrong. Those bruises on Ann’s arm are from you grabbing her too hard. Whenever I’m around you, I feel like I’m back at the coven.” She growled with silver eyes. She shook, though I recognized this, she was struggling to keep her powers in check, another secret that she didn’t want others to know about herself. I pursed my lips, glaring at my adopted sister.
“Jesse, you did that?” I asked her sternly, and she glared back at me defiantly, but I could tell she really didn’t mean it. I could also hear her inner thoughts.
“She was trying to run away.” She snapped, trying to seem tough, and I had had it.
“Jesse. I don’t know what to do with you. but I KNOW you… if I sit here and let you get away with all this, you’re going to do it again.” I told her, my wolf wanted me to nip her, but I couldn’t do that anymore, I could kill her. My bite was now dangerous…. And I didn’t know how to turn this power on and off right.
“Are you Serious! I Haven’t done shit! They’re weaklings.” She snarled. I snarled in her face, making her submit. Geez… she isn’t scared of me but Lady Damnit. What if she behaves this way in public?!
“If I may, your highness, possibly take an outside source, let another pack member give an opinion.” Said Garnet.
