Chapter 66

Kaiden
He got up and growled defiantly, meeting my red gaze with black eyes. I glared at him, and we circled each other as best as we could in the small, cramped arena. He was as strong as Beta, though I could not feel any ancient blood within him. He was simply blessed this way by the goddess, and as much as I blaspheme her, I doubt I was as blessed if not for my ancestors.
I spat blood and so did he. My throat was completely open, he had barely missed my veins, though my insides stung from being exposed. He bled with the same intensity, because I sliced too low upon closer inspection. His entire left shoulder had his bones and tendons exposed, though he showed no pain. He stood as if nothing had happened to his broken body.
Without saying anything, we bounded to each other. Teeth gnashed, and fur flew, but I wanted to show him, without my true power, I was Alpha. I didn’t have that kind of wiggle room with him to get cocky though. He tried desperately to grab my exposed veins, but my claws would not let him. He reared on his back legs, to try and muscle me to the ground, but I weighed more. I forced him to the concrete. It was now I who had him by the throat, pinned to the blood stained, slippery floor.
He did not yield. I bit down a little harder, he cackled a mind linked laugh to me. /I too am Alpha, prove to me that I am yours to bend./ He laughed. /You cannot. I smell your wolf is weak./ He cackled. Rakaam let our true aura flow through our bodies. My eyes were still red, my strength still the same, but he had stopped trying to hold back even more than we already do.
/I realize now… that no matter what I choose, I will be wrong./ He said to me. /I will not be submitted. I am Alpha. I will not fear our little mate leaving./ He growled in my head to me.
Bryson submitted and my presence made him revert into his human form. I let out a howl of victory that was responded with howls of loyalty or submission. I shifted and threw his ass in the cell while I had him not truly defeated, but it would have to be good enough. He’d lost enough blood that he would die if he continued, but also at the moment I’d surprised him by my aura.
“Kneel.” I commanded.
I felt the rush of victory overtake my pain, and he saw this. He kneeled by lowering his head, his red eyes showing submission by looking at the floor, though all of this was so slight I wouldn’t have noticed if not for my mental state…. He did not feel my wolf until now, because until now, Rakaam was conflicted.
Babygirl last night must have been horrified of what I become with no control… my wolf hates that, and his silence told me that I was right. I could tell though that this definitely wasn’t going to be our last encounter, but for now I had no choice but to shift.
I showed no pain with my head high for the prisoners and guards alike to see I was Alpha. To show weakness is to be cast out… but that slight moment of hesitation was literally all a wolf who held strength would need. I almost died today, that wasn’t new, but what was was the thought of coming home to my mate looking like this.
This wound would leave a permanent scar since those fangs of the prisoner’s were serrated… a rarity…. And I knew it would be a bitch to heal. My wolf was silent, blaming himself, but I would not allow that. It was partly my fault as well for not soothing him properly, instead of just threatening him on what ifs.
He did not want to lose babygirl, yet, without our strength, we would anyway.
/We cannot be Alpha by holding hands and singing songs, though that would be nice. We live by might. That is the wolf within us. We rule with our minds and abilities to adapt around humans, holding the façade to unleash our true nature in private. That is the human side. But that being said… Eclipse will never leave us. She is fragile because we had no control… even now I don’t remember what happened and I care not to know. What matters is that right now, our mate is waiting for us to return to her, but we cannot if we don’t do our job./ I said firmly. Rakaam nodded, and I walked as my wolf to the infirmary.
I was terribly dizzy, and on 4 wabbly, but good legs I made it to our small clinic that was being renovated. Beta decided to approve the expansion while he was standing Alpha. Honestly, I was impressed. He would have interrupted me during the council meeting, so he made the right choice.
I walked through the double doors, and was greeted by the nurse, who tossed me a pair of bike shorts. “Alpha that’s all I have… we’re running low on your size.” She said with a bow. I nodded. I figured it was about time to order more replacement clothes. I went to my room at the end on the right and waited. The smell of my blood filled the halls, I knew I wouldn’t wait long.
“Holy shit Alpha.” said the doctor, I let out a dry cackle. I sat still while he sprayed my neck with iodine. It fucking stung, but I didn’t move. “I can’t really stitch this… but I can staple it.” he pulled a machine out his pocket. Rakaam immediately took over and growled. “Alpha if I stitch that, it could get infected... but I can’t leave it open either… I don’t think it will heal without serious intervention….” He bowed respectfully. If only he knew that we saw him more as a friend than a doctor.
“I understand, but tell that to my wolf.” I said as a corny, light joke, and he seemed to relax.
I didn’t feel any pain, but he did stick a drain tube in my neck. Rakaam immediately tried to mess with it, and I had to fight him. The doctor left swiftly after that, most likely from seeing the rapid eye color changes. I didn’t have any intention on staying there any longer than I needed to. I decided to walk in my human form to the other packhouse, since shifting would open the staples. I was still dizzy, but I still hadn’t seen what they were up to.
The walk was peaceful, and I howled hoarsely to strike the fear in the hearts of anyone crossing the territory line. My howl was a little deeper than usual, seeing as how all my power was just at the forefront, ready to come out. It made my throat burn a bit, but it was soothed by the thought of Meat. I could probably heal all this skin by morning if I could find something. I smelled around while I walked, thinking about how hungry I had gotten. I smelled a human in the wind. It was fall, so it was probably a camper.
I followed the fresh scent to see that they were already about to be taken by the warriors to the prison. The warrior on the left was about 6’4 and had green eyes and chestnut hair. He was taller than the female who also held chestnut hair, and brown eyes. They had the humans sitting by a campfire, while they were putting on clothing.
I looked to see a fairly nice truck, and a cooler. They camped in a clearing with a cheap tent, under the stars. They had a small fire going. The teen boy was obviously trying to be romantic. He was about 5’11, blonde hair, and brown eyes. The girl looked to be about 5’2, with short curly brown and green dyed hair, and blue eyes. They hadn’t noticed me, as they were still mind linking others about the apprehension. The wind was also blowing away from me. So, I decided to watch.
“Roger what’s going to happen to us… they’re monsters…” whispered the girl.
“All I have to do is call my dad Stacy, don’t worry. They seem like they might be reasonable.” He whispered back.
The male warrior laughed a deep chuckle. “You would be blessed to be silent, little boy. Mommy and daddy can’t help you now.” He said darkly with a chuckle.
“Dad, it wasn’t that funny,” said the she wolf, elbowing him in the side. She looked as if she was maybe 16, so possibly a similar age to the humans.
“Calm down Ellie, you did a great job! We’re keeping the pack safe.” He boasted proudly.
“But they’re pups...” She looked down, watching the fire.
He put a firm pat on her shoulder. “Pups that would go and tell where they went… thus causing MORE to know this location. Pups that would cause our way of life to be in danger. You have a good heart, but remember, you can’t trust humans… there are too many destroyed packs to prove this… almost ours too if not for Alpha.” He clenched his fist, looking at the humans with hatred.
