Book 2 Chapter 40
John
I snarled, lunging at her again, only to be smacked away, but each time, I became more motivated. If I didn’t win, I wasn’t sure if she was lying or not. I didn’t know that something as simple as training could have stakes attached to it, but it probably did.
She dodged me suddenly, leaping completely over me, charging to the arena’s seating area. I was panicked, but I mentally slapped myself, and ran after her. I couldn’t believe I caught up to her, but when I did, I chomped down as hard as I could on her back legs and she snarled in pain for the first time since we started. I summoned all the strength I had to hold her, because I could tell she was trying to get to my mate, but I would never let her. She turned around snapping at my face, but I wouldn’t budge. Even if she did bite, I still wouldn’t move. This was for Heidi…
Good. She growled. Thankfully, she’d stopped moving forward, because I wasn’t going to let go until she did.
She shifted. There were claps, even from my mate… I internally sighed. I was an idiot. There was no way in hell that anyone would actually let my mate get hurt. “Well done son. That was much more progress than I thought I’d see in one day. Come, have some, what is this again? Alligator-aide?” He said looking suspiciously at my favorite flavor, the dark blue one. It was so cold it was sweating, and I bowed to her deeply before leaving the arena.
“Father, I thought she was going to eat my mate or something!” I complained, but Warrior Shikara laughed.
“That was the point. You weren’t serious until then, and I needed to see your true potential.” She chuckled, but I was still a little pissed at them…. Let it go John, they scared us to help me not be so chicken shit. Growled my wolf, and I almost laughed at him. Don’t beet yourself up too bad, we’d never had an opponent so aggressive. I tried soothing him, so I could get to Heidi.
They were proud of me, but I only cared about my mate. I ran walked to her as fast as I could, not bothering to go up the stairs. I jumped, grabbing the top of the wall where the seats began, and I got my hair ruffled. There were many council members who shook my wrist, but I tried to keep any greetings short. Both me and my wolf needed her. She got up, meeting me halfway, and I kissed her on the lips.
“I don’t know how… but just the thought of you in danger made me irrationally determined…” I said quietly, and she kissed my cheek.
“I know it was a tad underhanded, but necessary. You understand son?” He said linking someone, but I didn’t know who. He passed me a drink, and I didn’t think anything of it. I took deep gulps, and felt sick instantly afterwards but I tried playing it off…. He wasn’t kidding about the training. They put the damn wolf’s bane in my Alligator-aide. I didn’t even taste it. They knew what they were doing.
“I was really worried until your dad let me in on the secret.” She said with a small smile, and I shot him a glare. “Is he ok?!” yelled my mate but, he only smiled.
“All of you are evil.” I growled, falling to my knees, but the Council members chuckled.
“I commend him, Honored Second. Even afraid, under the face of death, he chose to fight. If you would have ran, I really would have killed you boy, and I would have raised their next heir myself.” She growled.
“I told you he was nothing like my older son.” He stood, taking my mate’s hand to shield her from the other council members while we left. I followed him feeling like shit. I was thankful that he had that planned out, because in the state I was in, there was no way that I would have been able to do anything more than fall over.
He dropped off my mate with the Queen, and once he did, he walked so much faster I had to jog to keep up. “Boy you will get no special treatment. We will train every day. Poisoned Every night. You will Hunt with me, and defend pack with me.” he said proudly, but not slowing his pace.
“If it means I can defend my family, my mate, and all those innocent wolves from my enemies then I will train until I bleed.” I told him with determination. He stopped to turn and grin.
“My son…” He put both his hands on my shoulders. “My only regret is that I could not raise you myself. You are already stronger than your brother… simply not in body. But this will change. You will surpass him. Both in body and in spirit.” He said to me in confidence, but Brutus passed us.
“You spoil him. He should still be outside.” He commented casually, and my father scoffed.
“I have trained every pup of every councilman; I know what I’m doing. Too much would only strain the joints.” He growled, walking inside with his head high.
“I will take my leave; you seem too agitated to dance today.” He chuckled, taking his seat, and we walked in to take ours.
It was something between him and Brutus that was more than just political rivalry, but I didn’t know what. In a way I wished he would tell me, but if I knew, I would probably hate that guy more.
He’d already harassed my mate, that was more than enough to fill his throat with sand. My wolf agreed, but for the sake of peace, and not looking an ass, I would behave. I had no choice. Even with all the precautions I had taken… sitting next to the king is legitimately taxing.
He sat there tall and firm, looking bored but somewhat content.
“This meeting is not mandatory, however all involved with the sleeping Old Ones…. And their maintenance should stay.” He said sternly, causing the hair on my neck to stand.
“My I ask then, your Highness, why is Alpha Ronitus’s pup and Brutus here?” Said Alpha Augustus, who had his fingers interlaced. Brutus left, grumbling, while half the council snickered.
“If it pleases the court, I could go?” I asked, but my father stopped me.
“As one of Ancient blood, he will take my mantle, guarding the world From the Wet One, as well as maintaining the trick I laid on the Beast Prince, the head general of Xaxas…” He said loud enough for Brutus to hear as he left, and I internally sighed.
-------Heidi------
I felt really bad for John, but I knew it was something he would have to go through… especially if the dream I had before he marked me came true. I had been in the Luna’s Council Room for a while, at least an hour. I drank tea silently with my grandmother, who sighed putting down her cup.
“My fellow Lunas who are still present, know this meeting is optional. I have given the allotted time allowed in case someone changed their mind, however the Royal Guard informs me that the Fifth, Tenth, and Eleventh seat have already gone home. However this nonmandatory meeting is to discuss the attack of my Beta’s pack.” She said, while everyone else in the room remained where they were. This meeting was informal, and she allowed us to be comfortable.
“Your highness, please, you do not have to use your attention on my behalf.” Bowed Luna Aemi, but grandma growled.
“Be silent. You are my most dear friend. My pack sister, if anyone lays a hand on your fur, they will die. It is simple.” Snarled Falcon, grandma’s wolf.
“Forgive me your highness…. Please have mercy upon my son… He has done so many terrible things, but he is still my child.” She begged, bowing her head as low as it could go, but grandma’s wolf snarled a real snarl. It made me nervous.
“Never. He is a threat. He lost his way, and was given a chance to redeem himself in exile, and chose to try and kill his mother. He was no longer your son that day.” She growled, having to close her eyes to compose herself.
“Forgive me, Luna.” She tried not showing that she shed tears, but the other Lunas were silent. They were all mothers; they knew how she felt…. I would feel the same way if it was John we were talking about.
“For now, we may have to simply capture him before the King does.” Suggested the Third Luna.
“You only say that as a farse.” Growled Luna Aemi in tears. “He is My Son. A son I will watch on trial again. A son who will bring shame to his father a second time… a son who I cannot hate because it’s My fault.” She yelled, stomping her feet, but I never expected the Third Luna to come and to console her, putting her hand on her shoulder.
“No, my eldest son too is rotten to the core… as much as I hate to admit it. Aemi, this is not your fault. He made is own choices. Poor choices. All we could do was give them a good life, if they chose to throw it away, do not blame yourself…” She said quietly.
“It is the first time in a long time you have shared meaningful, well-placed words Third Luna.” Said my grandmother, who held a stern gaze. “But I will not stand for what has happened to my Second.” She growled.
“Your highness, all reports of Herrakken indicate that he may be in Bosten. He may be on the move to Londion in order to escape.” Said the Sixth Luna, handing grandma a folder. She skimmed over it with a hum.
