Book 2 Chapter 45
Heidi
I held the number in my hands that Alpha Oliver gave me, but I put it on the Luna’s desk…. This entire time I had it… but I didn’t use it. I sat there nervous. What if it was some scheme? He was an odd seat….
“It’s going to be ok… I’m right here.” Said Luna Aemi…. And even though I was sitting right next to her in her office … I was still freaked out…
Just Call! Screamed Sparkle, and I picked it back up. She’d been screaming at me for ten minutes now to stop being a chicken…
I gulped, and finally dialed the number. “Hello, this is Dr. Hinds, how may I help you?” Said the man on the other end. I froze. “Hello?” He asked questioningly.
Ann came in the office and nudged me, and I took a deep breath. She was never too far away from Garnet, who stood silently as my guard.
“Um.” I said after he was silent a second… I don’t know why I was so terrified. He was in New Apple…. Hours away and I was surrounded by my mate, warriors, and the second strongest living Alpha…. Lord help me.
“Are you ok? There’s no need to be scared young lady.” He said as if he had a smile in his voice. Who was he? Why did I get this number… why did I call?
“Um I’m fine… just not good with strangers.” I admitted, and he chuckled.
“If it’s all the same to you, I used to be that way too until my Alpha helped me.” He admitted. “What’s you’re name? Then we won’t be strangers.”
“Heidi Stone…” He sounded like he dropped his phone and some other things, and I could hear shuffling.
“Heidi?! Oh praise the sweet Pale Lady moon… is it really you?” He sounded like he was on the verge of tears. “My little Heidi… I’m so sorry. So so sorry.” He cried. This was too much… and I felt so strange about it. I’d never heard of a Dr. Hinds… I wasn’t allowed medical care, not even healing magic in the coven. Maybe he felt bad that he wasn’t allowed… I’d heard that Alpha Oliver killed allot of the leaders when he took over.
“It’s ok… you did nothing wrong.” I said trying to soothe him, but he sounded like he was worse.
“I should have taken your mother away from that place, but I listened to her. She wanted so desperately for you to be accepted, but we both knew…we knew…. It’s my fault… I know they hurt you….” He sobbed and my eyes grew wide.
“…. father?” I asked. He composed himself.
“Yes. I am… I am why you’re like this. Your mother and I died before we could raise you… the only thing I gave you in this world was your name before we died.” He said quietly, but I was confused. He needed to explain.
“I do not like the games you play wolf.” Growled Luna, but the man growled on the other end.
“I play no games! Never!” He snarled.
“Hang up.” She commanded me, and my wolf wanted to comply because she was making me, but I needed to hear.
“No Luna… please... let me hear him out.” I said pleadingly, fighting my wolf to keep her hand off the button until she gave in.
“Fine.” She snarled. “Be quick little man.”
“Your mother was sterile until she did a ritual with her coven. You were supposed to be pure blood, but instead she had you with me… because I was her true mate. We both knew the risk, and thought the coven would accept you…. eventually. Instead, they killed us both, and both of us were resurrected…. Though she wanted revenge. We thought you were dead…” He said quietly.
“Where is my mother…?” I asked.
“She has returned to the Horned One… her blind rage and revenge seeking caused Alpha’s hand to be forced to put her down… I’d have liked to say that losing you was why… but she was never a good woman, but she was mine.” He sounded heartbroken, but I had to know.
“Was he her patron?” I asked.
“No, hers was the Earth Goddess Lia, but they pleaded all the other gods one at a time until someone answered…. I don’t know who though.” He said quietly, but I would not tell him that… it was not anyone’s right other than myself to know my maker and pay him homage…
“Well… I thank Alpha Oliver and my patron…. I didn’t know you were alive… But I never died. The coven treated me so poorly I wound up accidently finding the Wolf Prince... he adopted me when I was 14.” I said quietly and he was silent a while.
“All this while… I am sorry I return to you now…Thank you for giving me the time…” He said somberly.
“I actually had this number since the last High Council meeting…” I admitted and he chuckled.
“I hope then if you choose to call again it will be sooner.” He said sounding better, and we said our goodbyes. I didn’t know if I would call again… my head was spinning….
My family did a forbidden ritual to change who my patron was because hers didn’t approve their pairing… and the coven wanted her to find another witch… not be with her mate. They killed her for not cheating on her mate…
“Heidi are you ok?” Asked Luna Aemi, who I know could hear my thoughts.
“The High Crone was a bitch. I hope the Horned One shows her no mercy.” I mumbled, which surprised Luna.
“For you to say that, she had to be pretty evil… but still. You shouldn’t speak ill of the dead.” She Ann coming in. It was a human expression, but I would try and explain anyway…
“She was the one who killed my parents. Beat me. Tortured me. If anyone tried being nice, they got beat too. I didn’t even have a name guys. I only know it because I taught myself how to read in secret and got caught! I was beat for that too! I was beat for smiling. I don’t like being touched. It’s hard to be happy. Even now I still freak out if I have a nice day because I feel it’s going too good!” I threw my hands in the air, and it made the lights flicker.
She hugged me. “Heidi… right now I feel the same way you do, but you have the pack now. Hundreds, no thousands of wolves that would be more than willing to lend an ear or hand for you.”
“I know… but why is it still so hard?” I asked looking down at my father’s phone number… Luna got up and joined our hug.
“No one said healing happens overnight… do you know I still have nightmares of the war? I still fear humans too…So vividly… like the culling of our people was yesterday. Back then we lived in fear. There were no accords, no treaties. You could be sleeping and very well be woken up to a silver dagger in your back… seeing your friends on fire…your home ablaze, livestock killed, Omegas violated before their throats were slit… I know the mortals today don’t even remember the war… it isn’t taught to them, not even as a fairy tale. But every time I see one, or have to talk to them, I think of killing them and running away, because they see me, will know what I am, and will hunt me.” She said quietly.
“Sometimes I still dream of my fight with the Wet One… I can swim, but I would never do it unless I had to.” Said Alpha Ron, patting my back.
“My fear is that you’ll shut me out or away little mate... Why didn’t you link me?” John asked picking me up from everyone’s embrace to hold me. I wrapped my arms and legs around him so I wouldn’t fall, and also the mate bond was so soothing.
“I didn’t realize that hearing his voice for the first time would bring up so many memories… Thank you all for sharing your fears. As crazy as it sounds I never imagined that either of you would fear anything.” I said snugging my nose into John’s strong scent. He smelled like an Alpha now, but he didn’t scare me.
“Heidi no one is exempt from that, not even the King himself.” I felt John cringe and I wondered why, but I wouldn’t ask. It was probably private.
I let John go, but I continued to hold his hand. “Um… I kind of want a breather if that’s ok.” I asked, and they nodded.
“Have the rest of the day off.” Said Alpha Ron, and we both ran down the stairs before they changed their minds… I didn’t want anything to do with anymore Luna stuff right now anyway.
I felt off.
I went home with John, and I was thankful that we lived outside the packhouse. I was also thankful my father got revived, and but also thankful for my new family. I loved them. I really did. I know it was selfish…. But I daydreamed about how life would have been if I had a normal upbringing… but would I have met John…?
