Book 2 Chapter 26

John
I had my shirt off, sparring with my father. It was 5 in the morning, but since my wolf woke me up at 4:30 exactly, I figured that I may as well get up.
“Your form is good, but you lack patience. I’m going to get serious now that you’re warmed up, and if you aren’t ready, I’m going to probably kill you.” He said like Alpha Kaiden used to, but he was way more serious. I barely dodged his fully extended claws in my face, only to be followed by a kick to the ribs.
I coughed blood, and he shook his head. “No breaks dad, I can take it.” I growled, dodging his punch to get him twice in the stomach as hard as I could. If he was going to be serious, I would too. He chuckled.
“Now that’s what I expect from my boy.” He said proudly. “Oddly enough, you feel stronger than Herrakken when he was your age, but you have a long way to go.” He said with a small grin.
“How old is my brother?” I asked while we practiced hand to hand, exchanging a light punch from time to time.
“4,455, but he never had the patience to learn how to properly fight like this. He’s nearly blind in his left eye though, so if you ever have to fight him, attack that side first.” He commented casually.
“That’s dirty… and Father realistically, I will never catch up to that.” I grumbled, and he slapped me on the back.
“If you think he has any honor you can forget it. Also son, Realistically, you could if you follow the regimen I give you. There’s a reason why we rule you know.” He corrected and took off his pants, shifting into his wolf. Come on, we were supposed to check the border yesterday. He linked, and I followed him. I could barely keep up, but he ran around the entire territory with me like Alpha used to. My legs burned, and I tried absorbing every scent, every odd shaped tree, and anything else that could familiarize me with the territory.
I’m surprised you aren’t whining to give up. He linked with a smile on his wolf’s face.
Nope. I can take it. I have to be ready. I grunted in wolf, and we stopped suddenly.
Don’t move. He warned, growling with all his hair standing on end. He was alert, daring his eyes around swiftly to look for threats.
What is it? I asked.
Look at your feet, and back away slowly. He said with a snarl.
I looked and there was a thin shiny line… a tripwire. I backed away, making sure I didn’t run into another one, because now that I was aware of them… they were everywhere.
What do we do? I shifted, as I was smaller now, and so did my father after he howled for the pack.
“I don’t know son… I smell gunpowder… These set off something explosive.” He picked up a thick fallen stick, and tossed it into a line that was a few yards off. There was an explosion, and what looked like small needles lined a tree. They looked like they were coated in something purple… it had to be poison.
“Silver darts…. How drole.” He snorted. “Son, remind me to give you, your mate, and Anastasia wolf’s bane treatment starting this afternoon, but for now, meet up with Garnet. He should be about halfway down the trail by the time you see him.” He grumbled, purposefully setting them off one by one.
“Ok dad.” I shifted and trotted off. I saw the ink black wolf practically dissolve into my sight, and he gave me a bow. He was a little smaller than dad, and it made me wonder just who this guy was. He was as large as an ancient, though there were only four known lines. There weren’t others. At least…. none that I knew of.
Alpha, I will protect you with my life. Forgive me… I can’t patrol the pack and watch your mate at the same time. I have been securing the inner ring of the pack’s homes so hard that I neglected the perimeter. He linked but I shook my head.
You’re only one wolf Garnet. I don’t think that you should beat yourself up over this. You kept me and my mate safe, and for that I thank you. I linked.
Thank you. Also, I smell a Shadow. I must get you and your mate to safety. He linked, and we ran faster. It would be difficult to get this close to my mate in the middle of the pack… but they already showed that they knew what they were doing. There were guards surrounding the house, and I almost held my breath, worried for my mate. I shifted, barging in and being engulfed in a hug.
“They said assassins attacked the border and I was so worried, thank the Lady!” She screamed, hugging me tighter.
“I’m fine, but we need to get to the packhouse.” I told her, patting her head.
Heidi had been woken up, and Ann was still out. The change had happened in her, but we couldn’t wake her, as her body wasn’t ready yet. She had shifted too soon but she would be fine with allot of rest. She smelled like a full blooded wolf, but not a strong one. She was only about as strong as Heidi, but she was a wolf. That was the most important thing. Now she could be a full member without someone trying to kill her because she smelled of hunter.
“I can carry Ann while we evacuate you two to the packhouse.” He said, tucking a stray hair behind her ear.
“Go ahead.” I said, picking up my mate. I was faster, and though it wasn’t that far, I didn’t want to wase time.
Wolves were told to go indoors, while I had too as well. I wasn’t ready to take on anything out there yet… as much as I hated to admit it to myself. I wouldn’t beat myself up about it though.
“Alpha what are your orders, the pack is secure.” Said Warrior Commander Latruce. He had at least 20 warriors behind him, and they awaited my direction.
“This is a Shadow Warrior we’re dealing with, so be ready. I want at least 1 warrior on every block of the pack residency, all shops closed, I want everyone ID’ed and I need our Shadows out there finding this guy. He can be anywhere, but most importantly, he’s going to want to get in here... so Garnet you stay here, while I go look for dad.” I said like an Alpha and all heads were bowed.
“But Sir, if you go out there, how can I protect you?!” He was concerned with my safety, and I had an idea. I rubbed a hoodie on myself, and passed it to the Warrior Commander.
“Do not question me.” I almost shouted, and their eyes lit up like a lightbulb. They didn’t know what I looked like if they were new, but even if they did, anyone can be anybody in a hoodie.
He slammed the door, snarling as he did so, and I immediately heard scuffling. “I got him.” He yelled while we rushed outside, to see him get stabbed in the leg. The hooded assassin in all black twisted the blade, but his eyes looked fearful, when he saw Garnet.
He tried running, but Garnet got the man by the neck, forcing the assassin to instantly submit. The neck is the most sensitive place on the body, that he had it meant he pretty much won the struggle before it started. There was another man who had the same crazy eyes as Garnet, but he froze in front of him.
“Take the Commander to the infirmary!” I shouted, and warriors put him in one of the pack cars.
“Release my daughter.” Demanded the man and Garnet laughed.
“You know better Quentez. Why don’t you start off by telling me why you betrayed the Shadows, and who else is with you?” He said darkly, squeezing the girl’s neck tightly.
“You know I won’t do that.” He sneered. Garnet snaped the girl’s neck, tossing her to the side. I was surprised that he did it… but he seemed unaffected by his actions. I was a little worried that he was the one protecting my mate… geez
“Gen NO!” HE screamed, shifting, and running toward us who were ready to fight but Garnet reacted first. He rushed the assassin, and they fought as wolves. The fight was intense, until Garnet pinned him to the ground by the neck, and clamped down until he passed out. He then shifted, and wiped the blood off his mouth with a clawed hand.
“There, take him to the holding cell. I must protect their majesties.” He said with a growl, and there wasn’t any hesitation.
