Book 2 Chapter 47

Heidi
I floated off the floor, deep in meditation. I was asked by Alpha Ronitus to look for and find Herrakken, but… because it had been three days since I had any updates on him. My dreams these past few days were repeats, meaning either nothing had changed… or he had access to something magical enough that I couldn’t see past it.
I squeezed my eyes shut in frustration… all I kept seeing was what I’d already seen. I also kept seeing of all things a black box in what looked like an office… but that couldn’t be right. Whatever that was, it was unrelated to John and his brother … I wondered what that meant.
I felt a heavy presence weigh on my soul, but I was alone in my room with John training outside, and Garnet was in the living room with Ann…. It sighed.
“Horned One?” I asked quietly, and there was a small chuckle.
“Yes?” He responded in a whisper I could feel on my ear, but I scrunched my eyes as tight as I could. He was my patron, he would not hurt me unless I was breaking the rules, and I wasn’t.
“I did not summon you sir…” I tried sounding as polite as I could.
“I am a God, I will visit you as I see fit, as you are my child…. Why do you tremble again? Does my true form scare you this much? Was my voice too loud?” He asked, putting his hand on my shoulder…. But his aura felt like an entire building was thrown on my back. I lost my concentration, and I gently floated to the floor… I can’t believe I said that! I spoke too familiarly to the God of Destruction. I didn’t understand his motive…. He spoke gently, but why? Why did he sound so nice… like I could trust him?
“Forgive me for offending you Lord of Night.” I couldn’t gather any strength in my words around him, all I did was stutter. He sighed like he was getting frustrated.
“Open your eyes. You may find this gift less…. Taxing.” He commanded of me gently, but my eyes opened without delay. There was a small black rat at my feet that snuggled into my lap… Lady it was about the size of a baby bunny, but something told me that it was an adult.
What was I supposed to do with it?! It hopped in my lap. It put its front paws on my shirt, sniffing lightly as if it were begging me to hold him. I hesitantly petted it, and it snuggled into me more. I didn’t quite understand. His presence was completely gone, but now I had this rat to deal with….
“I’m on break.” Said John and I screamed! “Sorry!” He ran to me, and kneeled down to stroke my hair.
“It’s fine, I just didn’t sense you at All.” I complained, and he smiled a little.
“What is that? Did you find him outside? Hey little guy.” He reached to pet him, and it bit him hard. “You little shit!” He growled, licking his already healed finger.
“Sorry… I should have mentioned that the Horned One gave him to me…” I said quietly, also knowing this wasn’t for free… he wanted something from me.
“Heidi, I don’t know how magic works, but if the Horned One gave you that thing…. It’s probably not a real rat….” His eyes were whisky brown now… but I couldn’t let him do anything to it.
“John if you kill it, He will be angry. I don’t know why he gave it to me… or why he thought I needed it, but I have to think this through before we do something so rash.” I warned, but he looked at it sternly.
“Fine, but if it does anything evil, I’m killing it.” He warned, leaving out. I followed him into the kitchen, and Garnet looked at me curiously.
“How did that thing get in here?” He asked, flipping a grilled cheese in a nonstick pan. He already had some bacon on my plate, because it was lunch time. I skipped breakfast… so knowing both him and John, they would make me eat something.
“I found it.” I lied, and he knew I was, but he dropped it. I could see it by his scowl. I held the small rat in my hands, wondering where to put him….
“Well, I’ll have to go to town and get some pet food if you three want to come.” He looked down at Ann, who looked at the floor, no longer smiling.
“Arlington County is my hometown, and it’s small so someone would know me.” She held her arm, looking down. “It would be better if they thought I was dead. If anyone found out, they would stop at nothing to find me.” She said slightly upset.
“Then I’ll just ask Prudence, the Omegas can have some here by sundown since they’re already out.” He grumbled. “I wish you’d just let me kill them.”
“No! That wouldn’t solve anything to kill entire families so I could go shopping Garnet!” She tried shaking his arm, but he only laughed.
“I could do it in probably two or three hours. Four if they don’t live in the same neighborhood like I’ve scouted. Fuck. You didn’t hear that.” He rubbed the back of his head, and she stomped her feet.
“Garnet! No!” she yelled, and he sighed.
“Fine…. Anyway, all of you eat. John, I warmed up some raw on the table.” He frowned. “Alpha said you need to build more muscle for the next part of training.”
“I’m already eating 6 times a day for fuck’s sake. First he starves me and now all of you stuff me.” He complained.
“You’ll be ok.” I tried soothing him, but he cracked a small grin.
“I know but still.” He gave me a small peck on the cheek, and began to eat. I held the rat in my arms while I ate, but it wanted to get down. It hopped around but it didn’t seem too interested than anything other than sleeping on my feet. I put him in my pants pocket to keep him from getting stepped on.
After John ate, he left to train, while I went back into the room to meditate. I wasn’t picking up anything, except now I kept seeing Jesse. It was flashes of the past, when she would do mean pranks to me or talk ill of me… but one thing that stood out was the fact that the visions were moving forward in time. I thought I would see her leaving the pack to ShadowMoon, but instead I saw her walk from her home and clock in at what looked like a small prison. It was tiny compared to Horizon… but they had about 150 inmates. My fear of that place made me almost lose the vision, but I squeezed my eyes shut.
I began to float again, and the rat in my pocket squeaked softly. I needed to give him a name, but that would have to wait. I wanted to see what she was up too. She was on her lunch break, though there were other women guards there. Just them, and they all seemed like they were friends.
“Wow Jesse you really were raised with the Second’s son? His grace is certainly handsome… maybe put in a good word?” A woman with perfectly pin straight white hair and silver eyes giggled with Jesse, who was a tad shorter.
“He’s got a mate.” She grumbled, and another woman joined in the conversation. She was the biggest of them all, sporting gray hair cut into a bob.
“That weakling half breed? I thought that was just his pet...” Asked the white haired girl.
“You mean the half bitch?” They snickered, but one looked less enthusiastic than the others.
“Guys you might get us in trouble!” She said. She was the second tallest, a dark-skinned, tan furred she wolf. judging by her hair.
“Natali, the only ones on shift today on this whole floor are us, and I run cameras, so unless You’re the one snitching, stop being such a goody two shoes.” She grumbled, but she stomped her feet.
“Witch or not, she will be Luna… besides Assistant Alpha is almost as big as Alpha Ronitus, he won’t do anything to Jesse, maybe just lash her again…. But we might get banished.” They were quiet, but Jesse spoke up.
“She didn’t even do it right. She’s a fucking joke, and I know John. He won’t do anything other than get mad.” She said with a smirk. “That half bitch has everyone wrapped around her fingers. I don’t even think she’s John’s mate …” She mumbled.
“She is a witch…,” Said the white haired wolf. “But I think by now Alpha would have at least noticed any magic she put on him. He’s been around since the war.”
“True… but I just don’t like her! I Never have. It’s Something about her that makes my wolf growl.” Said Jess, and they looked curious. I was too, but what she said next, didn’t make sense, because it became distorted.
I had reached my limit, as my head was hurting. I needed to see more! This was just complaining at the workplace… nothing enough to really complain to John about…
“Dinner’s ready.” Said Garnet, and I fell on my butt on the floor. My rat ran around me in circles before jumping and biting at my friend. “Ah! You Little SHIT!” He snarled, clawing at it but missing.
“That’s a bad rat! Stop it Rahrraam!” I yelled and it ran to me, jumping in my pocket. I scrunched my eyebrows because I had named him so casually, like I already knew what his name was, but Garnet’s growling distracted me.
“That little bastard bit me on the fucking elbow.” He growled, but my rat squeaked softly. I patted it, and it gave me gentle nibbles.
“Sorry… I didn’t even know it got this late.” I admitted, and had dinner. John came in angry and covered in blood and sweat, but he smiled when he saw me. He gave me a peck on the cheek, but Garnet scoffed.
“Don’t get to close that little shit might bite you too.” He grumbled. John glared at it, and I swear it glared back.
“That’s a bad rat! No biting!” He said shaking his finger at it, and it went into my pocket deeper. He stuck his butt in the air at my mate, who was confused. I laughed.
“God, a rat with an attitude! It looked like it told you to kiss his ass!” Laughed Ann, and John pursed his lips.
“Lady damnit. I’m not arguing with a rat.” He grumbled, walking into our room to shower.
