Book 2: Chapter 16
Heidi
“I can.” She said shyly, and he tossed it to her. She fumbled with it in the air, but all I could do was hold my breath.
She aimed the gun out the window, and shot at it, missing every time.
“Aim!” Shouted john, and his mother went limp in the front seat. I saw the wisp of her spirit… John didn’t notice but I did. I summoned all my strength and forced it back with a chant that goes with the healing hands. I practically glowed green trying to keep her heart beating. She was supposed to be dead, and I was in trouble….
“I’m Trying!” She screamed, and John weaved between cars. “Wait I know that. It’s a cartel delivery drone…. It carries our weapons.” She had fired 5 shots, so she only had one left. John stopped at a red light and she aimed for the drone. She got it this time. It spun out of control, landing to the ground, and now we could travel to the pack. The drone would have showed the location of LapisMoon if we allowed it to follow us. The rest of the drive was peaceful, but we were separated from all the warriors and Alpha Ron.
We pulled into the gates, and they let us in when they saw how bad Luna was. He was escorted by wolves running in front of the SUV to the hospital, where she was immediately treated. They put her on a stretcher, and ran off with her somewhere. John called his father while holding onto the human woman, who still shook with the empty gun in her hands. He was trying to explain that she was the one who saved us, but no one wanted to listen.
I passed out, coughing blood. Everything was black, and I felt really hot. Too hot. I also heard a familiar, sinister chuckle. My wolf receded into the back of my mind, and I couldn’t talk to her.
“Ah, my innocent child has come to visit. Why are you here…. why do you tremble before your father?” Asked the Horned One himself. Oh no… no I had broken a law of nature!
“Um… I was healing Luna Aemi and she was supposed to die sir…” I said in submission. I looked at his feet, and all I could see were flames, hearing the screams of the damned and the punished. His black boots came closer to me. I kneeled before the god I feared most. My hands burned touching the rocky, singed wood smelling soil. My patron god was the Lady Moon…. Not him. He chuckled.
“You think my wife is your patron because she gave you a wolf?” He said amused. He was the God of Punishment and Destruction, equal to the Lord of Light. He was a ruthless dark god…. Those sent here are tormented. I was supposed to stop healing Luna, and let her die when her heart stopped and her soul left her body. I knew I was going to get in trouble… but I didn’t know it would damn my soul….
“Yes sir.” I spoke quietly. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I was surrounded by a charred flaming field. I could taste the sorrow and fear in the air. I could see the countless souls rain from the sky, and be sorted by him without skipping a beat, even though he was about to punish me.
“You think because you broke a law of nature once, that I would punish you?” He said walking to me until his boots were directly in front of me. One step closer, and he would be stepping on my hands…. “Performing a genuine act of kindness, no less.” He said seriously. He patted me on the head, and it took everything I had not to try and run away. This was his domain, there is no where to run or hide. Not from a god.
“Yes sir.” I said even quieter. I just didn’t want John seeing his mom die in front of him before he got a chance to get to know her…. to take from her a chance at being a mother.
He laughed. He laughed so hard, that the demons that started to surround me, slinked away into the shadows. “My little one.” He kneeled to my eye level, and made me look at him by putting a clawed finger under my chin. He was young, no older than 30… and he looked surprisingly kind. Though…. His eyes were void black with red irises. His fangs looked razor sharp. I felt like trapped prey.
“Forgive me, it won’t happen again!” I flinched when he touched my curls. He frowned.
“You don’t have to fear your father.” He told me, patting my back. I was confused, but comforted. If he was going to punish me, he would have by now.
“… Can I ask you a question?” I asked and he nodded. “Are you my patron… my soul’s creator?” I asked quietly. He nodded with a small mischievous smile. I would have known this when I was 13, but I wasn’t allowed to participate in rituals…. Or really anything that would have given me my abilities.
“Anything else?” He asked standing up. he had to be at least eight or nine feet tall.
“…. Would my parents have loved me…?” I asked quietly, looking at his boots.
“Wake up now.” He said quietly, as if he were trying not to scare me.
I bolted awake to see that John and Luna were in the same room as me. She was awake, and I was connected to all kinds of machines, because they couldn’t do much with magical problems. I was shaken from my dream. I was completely confused by my encounter, because it was the same as when I had prayed for dad a few years ago.
What did he mean?
“Heidi are you ok? You looked like you saw a ghost.” Said john, and there were doctors in the room, along with his father. I couldn’t tell them… it could cause a panic. No.... they would reject me. Wolves don’t deal with the Horned One, and it was already bad enough that I was a witch. I’m an outsider, no one would trust me if I said anything.
“I just used too much energy.” I half lied, hoping that they would drop it…
John looked at me very sternly, as if he knew I was lying but he took a deep breath, letting it out. “I’m taking her to our house, so she can relax.” He said looking to his father and he nodded. I was slowly taken off the machines, but the doctor gave us a briefing.
“Her grace is fine, though I wouldn’t do anything else magical. I can’t treat those kinds of injuries. I suggest if this continues, to take her to Emerald Coven.” He said casually.
“NO! I’m fine! I’m just tired!” I screamed, it was where I was from. The Last thing I needed was for them to know I was alive. I was a fugitive for disobeying and running away. There was no telling what they would do if I came to them needing help.
They would probably hex me.
“Heidi calm down… I’ll take her home.” Said John, picking me up. The human girl followed, practically running to keep up. I held onto him, clinging to him for dear life. If I were stronger, I’d be choking him by now. I noticed when he set me down, that he still had his truck. A warrior handed him the keys to his old truck. It was fixed up a little, but otherwise it still smelled the same… it kind of comforted me a little to smell charred pack on the leather seats sitting down.
He let the girl get in, then closed the door for me. He sat down turning the ignition. The stern look he held, putting me in the car told me that John knew I was lying. He breathed deep when he started his old red truck. It surprised me that he chose to keep it.
“Do you mind telling me why you’re so scared.” He said sternly.
“Emerald Coven was where I was raised.” I told him, but I didn’t want to tell him the rest. He clicked his tongue, making a right turn. He was driving past the packhouse, and it made me nervous. I knew he said something about a house earlier, but … I thought we would live in the packhouse. The town was beautiful and there were many Wolves and pups out doing chores or shopping, but I couldn’t enjoy the small tour John gave me. I could only think of the words that echoed in my mind.
He growled deeply, and I looked at him to see he was staring at me with the whiskey eyes of his wolf. “I will never let them take you.” He told me, holding my hand gently.
I prayed to the Lady that he would hold true to that. Hearing their name was enough to make me want to run away again. Nothing good came from them. No one good came out of that place. They were all monsters. They were scarier than the wolves…. At least they were more merciful. I could have things here, and be happy. I remember as a child if I was even caught smiling I could get harassed for it.
I held back tears, because they didn’t know, and I wasn’t around people I trusted to know my weakness besides John and my adopted family. Even Alpha Ronitus didn’t know. He only knew the summery of my life, not it’s story. I hated that I was so weak.
Heidi I hear you. Linked John. My little witch you are strong enough to blow this entire building to bits, yet your heart is pure. You are not weak. You are scarred. This is a battle that you still fight, and some fights leave nasty scars. You are loved now little mate. You are safe.
John thank you. I linked him back. It was what I needed, but I was still a tiny bit worried.
