Chapter 11
Eclipse
I heard the roars, yelps, and barks from the packhouse in the distance. Anxiety riddled my mind for my mate. He was out there fighting for the sake of the pack… and my sake. I felt like I was being selfish. He didn’t tell me why he left, because he knew I would worry. Everyone in the house was completely silent. No word was spoken, everyone was listening. All those nights I was terrified of him, thinking he was just tormenting people, but he was defending us too.
In a way, he has to send a message to anyone who comes near as a deterrent. If he were too nice, or let the wrong people in, it would make a mess of his house. He was the one who was to lead us, and I was the one to protect everyone else from his temper. I wonder how he would act once he came home. I was worried, but I knew deep down that by the way he smells, that no one would defeat him.
Then everything got quiet, and I heard Alpha along with howls. Cheers erupted, and I was relieved, I was also proud I had such a strong man. Shimmer and I held our head high; he was ours to love, and hold when he returned. He did his job, protecting the peace, but honestly, truly I had no idea what would have happened if he lost. I shook the thought from that and got an approving nod from Shimmer.
“Ok everyone you know the drill.” Spoke Beta Connor. Then he looked like he had a lightbulb go off over his head and looked at me. “Ok, not Everyone. Heads down averted gaze. Do Not attract his attention unless you want to get your dumb ass mauled.” He was about to pat my shoulder then he pulled his hand away quickly “And nobody touch the Luna!!” he screamed jokingly, but I didn’t even think about that.
“I’ll just be over here.” I said sheepishly by the couch in the living room, but he smiled.
“It isn’t that bad Luna, it’s just that he’s always had an issue with getting out of ‘Alpha mode’ after a fight.” He said as if he was leaving something out, but whatever it was, he wouldn’t say.
It was likely how he got his reputation… but it was one that was warranted. He really was as vicious as the rumors, though for some reason… I kind of understood it a little better. I couldn’t lie to myself and say that it didn’t bother me, but what he did was for the pack…
“Oh Luna.” Said a large warrior, and I looked up to see he had been trying to get my attention. He bowed before waiting for me to nod, which I did… but it was strange to do so. I’d never had to release someone from a bow before, but there was a first time for everything.
“I’m Warrior Bennet.” Said a wolf who I’d seen before in the packhouse, but I hadn’t met him until now. He was serious faced, with a shaved head and piercing blue eyes, though the flecks he held in them were yellow.
“Did you need anything?” I asked and he shook his head.
“I come with news.” He said formally. “Alpha is in a particularly poor mood; the rogue challenger managed to trick him and break his hand, but he will recover from that just fine.” He reported.
“Should I go see him?” I asked a little worried, and he looked like he saw a ghost.
“No, it would be best to stay here.” He said quickly.
He left almost as soon as he came, but that was expected. Alpha would be back soon, and he was already agitated according to Warrior Bennet. Him seeing me talking with another male could likely start a fight, because like Beta warned, I was to be avoided.
People treated me like the plague, afraid that if they were near me, and my mate came through the door that he would crush them. I could see him doing that, so to keep things peaceful, I went upstairs and sat in his office. It was nice with a dark hardwood desk, and papers stacked to one side neatly. He had an official pack stamp along with a desktop computer with a jumbled mess of files on the screen.
It seemed that everything from inventory to individual pack member information was all in one place, but there were little locks by each icon. He must have put a password on them, so no one could just walk into his office and touch stuff, like I was…. Well, more like look at, technically I had as of yet to touch anything. I drifted to the neat stack of papers next.
Everything had his signature. Building permits, requests to change packs to avoid becoming rogues, invoices from orders, and other things were there. It also looked like he wasn’t finished, as there was still quite a bit of things that had as of yet to be signed in a small basket I’d just noticed... He was the organizer of all the bills paid to the human world for everything, you name it.
There was a snarl that got my attention, and I jumped, quickly putting back the piece of paper I’d picked up.
I heard it get quiet again and I knew who it was. His steps demanded attention. They were slow, like a predator, and I was afraid again. I could smell him from up the stairs, reeking of victory. There was a danger in the air to this, like anything could set him off. He was the Alpha, and you bend the knee, or he will break it for you.
“Where is my Luna?” he snarled. I felt my body seize in the silence. I didn’t tell anyone I was coming up here and if he was told the wrong place they could get hurt. I could get hurt. What if he didn’t like me sitting in this chair looking at his stuff? I didn’t misplace anything, but in this state he would not care, it would be a challenge to his authority. He took two more steps. “I will not ask again” he growled a warning challenge. He was now daring any wolf to challenge his authority. I could smell his aggression rise and I could not speak. I tried, but I found myself hiding under the table.
/I have to say something!/ I thought to Shimmer. /But I can’t!/
Shimmer took over, “I’m in here” she said quietly.
He growled a low rumble of confirmation, making his way to the stairs. I could hear him get closer. Even from up hear I could smell how aggressive he was right now… That wasn’t natural, at least not for anyone I’d known up until this point.
His massive gate took each deliberate step with pride and authority. Even Shimmer, who usually likes the confidence and attention became timid. We had never experienced the might of an alpha’s true presence. It was overwhelming. Intoxicatingly demanding, like handling a wild cobra in the desert. No one will save you if you get bit. There was no escape from the grip of Death once he took you.
I trembled again, like I did the day before, hearing him walk up the stairs while I hid under the table. He slid the chair out the way, and just stood there a moment. It was as if he were giving me a chance to explain myself, but I was too intimidated to say anything. I was not bending the knee. I was disrespecting him not coming out to thank and acknowledge his leadership. It was disrespectful to be in his office, that he could smell my scent in his chair without permission. His word is law. That is the way of wolves. We work together, but the Alpha has the final say.
He took a long deep breath in, tapping the desk with what sounded like a claw. Shimmer receded to the back of my mind losing it, whimpering, and submitting in my mind. “Why are you under the desk, my little Luna?” he asked aggressively.
No words came out. More disrespect. I did not speak. “Do I have to get you?” the growl in his voice shook my body.
/I had done everything wrong, and I am going to die./ I thought to myself.
“What did you do wrong?” he growled slowly.
I could not respond, because both me and my wolf were overpowered by his aura. And I think that was the last straw, because he pushed the desk enough to reveal me, arms wrapped around my knees unable to stop staring at his face in terror. Another disrespect. Not averting the eyes.
“Well?” He raised an eyebrow, looking down on me with solid red eyes. Stitches ran down the length of his muscular chest, and a bandage encased his left hand.
/He was hurt to protect us, and I can’t even bend the knee./ I thought, feeling guilty.
“You worry of bending the knee?” he paused and smiled looking amused with himself.
[I submit,] Shimmer mind linked Alpha’s wolf without permission. I just kept staring, he bent down, picking me up and sitting us in his office chair in one swift motion.
“Little mate,” he paused, his eyes still crimson, staring blankly into my eyes. “My wrath is for disobedience, but my love is for you.” He leaned down, putting his nose to my neck and he inhaled deeply. “I am this way for you and you alone. None shall have mercy, save you.” He took his unwrapped hand and held me closer to his chest. The rise and fall of his steady breathing, along with his heartbeat was calm.
His words comforted me, but his presence dominated the very core of my soul. “I dare not kiss you, lest I take you, and you are not ready.” he sighed a growl in annoyance. “You will sit here with me until you calm yourself little mate” he commanded, sniffing me again. “You do not have to respond, but you will comply.” he commanded again.
And he sat with me in his lap, orange yellow eyes reading and signing papers.
