Chapter 28
Kaiden
My Luna would stay home today, to my displeasure, but it was necessary. She was still sleeping, and I would have to drive to the secret building bought and built just for this. It was somewhere where I would never willingly take her, surrounded by males who would sneer at her, and wish her to begone. Rakaam growled, but that would be about the most I would get out of him since these things ran for hours… ugh. Now that I thought of it, it would be wise to suppress him once I got there too. I hated doing that, but it might be needed.
I would be formal today, as all the other Alphas at this meeting would be too. I hated the formalities, old time sentiments and tradition, but if I wanted to keep this local, I would have to do this right.
Also, this was about more than the boy. It was about him attempting to stake his claim as the more dominant of the two of us. To have given him what he wanted in front of My men in My own house would mean that he was to be kneeled to, and that wasn’t happening. It would make me look more than weak; I may as well not have been an Alpha at all.
“See you later babygirl.” I kissed her on her sleeping cheek before going downstairs and borrowing one of the delivery Nissans. This car was for doing business in human towns, and it wasn’t usually parked in here. I’d have to borrow it because my ‘stang was in the shop.
I was old compared to her, and even older still are the council. There were many still who changed with the times, but there were more still that did not. There was also the fact that nearly every Alpha from Missoura to the Carulines would be there, and all would be pissed that they were summoned a week early for our meeting.
The drive was uneventful, though there was one small rule we all followed; we did not stop for gas nor rest stops if we could help it. Most of us were old wolves that looked too supernatural, and stood out too much to really interact with mortals. I was only a few inches short of 7 foot, and my eyes were so wolfish due to my bloodline that I stick out. I should have not banked on that movie’s attendance so much, but that was the past… now I had to deal with the council.
The plain brick, multistory building was well hidden in the trees. To a human, it would look like just a business, but the inside held the most powerful men of the region. We wolves for the most part cared about power. Every wolf knows his place. He would know if he were stronger or weaker than another, save the Omegas…. There would be no contention between them like it is for werewolves with active wolves.
For us, instincts drive us. Many Alphas, save the strongest bowed to me when I got out the car. That was also common. Many wolves liked fast cars…. Because we drove fast too, but I would have to wait to get mine back. At least in the Nissan I wouldn’t get a ticket. Thankfully the Secret Police dealt with that too, and we usually got them in the mail.
“Alpha Kaiden.” Said Alpha Opal of OpalMoon. We all had nametags at our seats, and over the years, I learned of wolves who I would not typically cross paths with. I knew Of him, but his pack was almost in the Midwest District.
I gave him a grumpy morning, and made my way to my chair, but of course everyone including him wanted to meet and greet.
We shook wrists. This wolf was over a thousand, though he smelled weaker than me by a bit. This was the same with many of the other Alphas, many had no idea what I was, but they could sense it. I was also in a bad mood, which made it harder to control Rakaam. He wanted to get his teeth into Wade, but I wanted to try this the diplomatic way first.
After all, he’d ruled that pack almost as long as he’d lived, and I’d known him my entire life. He wasn’t friends with my father, but he’d tolerated him. I wasn’t friends with him either, but ruling CharredMoon was easier with a neutral border. His younger son however was my fellow ne’er-do-well. There was no stone unturned or watering hole unsplashed when we were pups before I had to grow up. I vaguely remember those times, as it had been a while, and a lot has happened since then to be fair.
I made my way to my chair in the front of the long rectangular table. I was the youngest Alpha to sit in this region, as well as the highest ranking, even over the council, though only a very few knew that. I never used that power since I swore off the rest. With that responsibility lies the weight of more expectation, something now that I had my mate no one could convince me of.
“I am Alpha Joseph of LeafMoon, head of the central South Council, filling in for Advisor Phillip, who usually leads meetings. He is unable to attend on grounds of his mate being ill. This meeting has been presented as an emergency, to avoid conflict in multiple packs. As you know at least six packs must have dispute in order to call all wolves available, though the presence of the parties involved is mandatory.” He said standing slightly. He was a stocky old wolf from North Caruline. He was an ink black haired Native wolf that looked no older than 40. I think the only other wolf older than him here would be the Advisor, but he was never really here unless he had to be, like me.
“The first agenda is Alpha Nelson of HorseMoon in Tennasaw and Alpha McDaris of WhiskeyMoon in Tenassaw. There is the issue of 1000 acres pasture and Ultra Lightening Mock IV, the racing stallion.” He said with a straight face. “The estimated value of the third place Jentucky Derby winning breeding stallion is 1.3 million dollars. The stallion’s sire is considered in this value, as well as the lifespan of the beast. The 1000 acres of land also resides on top of an artesian well, the main source of water for both packs.”
There was no way in hell someone would give that away, not the water anyway. I would be more interested, however I just wanted this to be over so I could speak next.
“I got the deeds and bills of sale right here!” said Alpha McDaris.
“I haven’t signed anything!” Alpha Nelson growled and there was a hand waved in the air as the documents were passed to the council then me. They looked legitimate, but I wouldn’t say anything.
They went back and forth on this for at least half an hour until it was discovered that the rightful owner’s son and the opposing Alpha already sold the horse and split the money, and had been illegally breeding him since the stallion placed in the race five years ago. The well stealing was his own original plan, but it didn’t matter. Since neither were legitimate, it was his job to find that horse and also pay punitive damages.
“The next agenda is Alpha Charred of CharredMoon in Jentucky and Alpha Crimson of CrimsonMoon in Jentucky. A Soulbroken pup, Mathew Rustin, is contended on the grounds of being the blood of Alpha Wade, however alpha Kaiden has already claimed this boy on the grounds of defeating him in fair combat as well as his soul mate is a member of CharredMoon, and has not requested to transfer.”
“He is mine. Of my blood was he made, of my blood he returns, useless or not. I appeal the original decision.” He said coldly.
“Then both parties state your case one more time.” He said waving at me to go first.
“You only wish to have him to make friction. How long have our packs been neighbors?” I said calmly. It took everything I had to repress my wolf this long, but for the sake of doing this right, I had no choice.
“You are nothing like your father.” He said holding back his wolf. His eyes were lit up with him, but mine was just as ravenous. Suppressing him was beginning to get difficult. Letting him out would mean he would probably pick a fight, and it wouldn’t help the situation…. I began to wonder did he notice that I still smelled of silver?
“No, for I am stronger, and I will not be as tolerant as him. It takes More than strength to lead, but I feel as though I should remind you of your Place.” I said casually, looking stoic, though his feathers were clearly ruffled.
