Chapter 84

Heidi
It was Monday morning and Alpha was still asleep. I expected the pack to treat me like the coven… but no one blamed me. I was already up, even though it was sunrise, and I was nervous. What would happen at school? Did the other kids know what I did… It wasn’t on purpose but literally everything that’s happened this week was my fault… I never had friends my age, I sighed, today was going to be hell.
“Heidi, I hear you in there, come down and have breakfast with us before I show you where the school is.” Yelled Beta from downstairs. I grabbed my broom and did one last look at myself. I had on the black jeans and boots mom picked out for me, I also picked out a long black cardigan that looked almost like a cloak, and a purple t shirt. I liked it, and all this should help me stay on the damn thing I think while glaring at my broom.
I ran down the stairs, and everyone complimented me on how I looked. I felt uncomfortable but accepted the compliments from them. I still couldn’t believe that just like that, they accepted me and meant it. I still sometimes felt like I was going to wake up and be back in the cellar cell…
“Alright pipsqueak, eat, you don’t want to get blown away.” Uncle Connor said with a small smile, sliding me a bagel with some cream cheese, coffee, and some thick Grandian bacon. It was good and Uncle woke up mom, and she came down, Izzy and Caleb were still asleep.
“If you have any problems link us ok?” she gave me a tight hug. Mom was actually pretty strong… She was actually kind of squishing me, but her hugs always made me feel special. She gave me a kiss on the forehead before I went outside and got on my broom. There was no wind, but it was cold this early.
I jumped, taking off but staying about 6 feet in the air, waiting for my Uncle in his little black pickup. He had to be going about 30 while I flew about 20 feet off the ground, my leather backpack flapped in the wind. It was funny that he went that slow, seeing as how I could go at least 130 on this thing, not that I would! Gram-gram and me made this together last fall with plants we grew ourselves by hand with grandpa. She couldn’t fly it, but she helped me with the instructions.
The school was massive, brick, long and rectangular. And I could see people waiting outside to get in. They were other teenagers. They saw me and pointed, along with seeing Uncle Connor park attracted a lot of attention. I blushed, but I was probably too far up and away for anyone to see that. He parked and I landed next to his truck, and I followed him in the school before the other kids could go in. They all bowed and showed him respect, and I clenched my broom with both hands, barely able to keep up. I was no taller than mom, and Uncle, dad, and pretty much everyone else were giants.
“Sorry squirt, you’re practically running behind me.” He chuckled slowing down, hearing me. I hated that, but to my understanding, it was passively done for the most part… I wondered though how he didn’t have a headache since so many people were around. /Don’t worry about it./ Uncle linked. I didn’t say anything, because we were at the destination he was leading me too.
He led me to the councilor’s office while the bell rang, and it became flooded with students. She was a tall woman with dark gray hair, green eyes, and thick glasses. She talked with Uncle and gave me a locker combination, along with my schedule. He followed behind me, while I put my broom away in the blue lockers and led the way to my first class. I went inside, but Uncle Connor stayed outside, looking through the small square window.
They made me stand in front of the class and talk about myself. They looked expectedly and I froze, I had never had to talk to people my age before… what was I supposed to say? I took a deep breath, “I’m Heidi Charred, um, and I’m a half witch…. Alpha Kaiden adopted me and this is my first time ever going to school with my peers…” I stammered over my words, hating every moment of it, but everyone was curious… except one girl with shimmering silver hair.
She glared at me, like I was stealing her thunder or something, and I sat down in front of the teacher. She sat in the back with a bunch of other girls, but they didn’t say anything to me. I just did my work as best as I could and stayed out of anyone’s way. Only the Horned One would give maths this early in the morning, I thought to myself. It was a good thing I did have that cup of coffee Uncle made.
Time went by slowly after that until lunch. I was confused on how you had to wait and stand in line for food just like in the prison, but at least I didn’t embarrass myself by cutting. I had gotten a chicken sandwich and a soda, and I sat at a table by myself. I hoped it would stay that way. I know dad wanted me to make friends… but I just couldn’t muster up the fur to walk up to anyone.
Then a bunch of large boys sat at my table. I got nervous, what did they want? “So, you’re Alpha’s kid?” said the tallest one, he must be the leader of the group. He had jet black hair with brown tips and green eyes kind of like a cat. He had to be at least 6’4. He was already kind of muscular, and I could smell that he was pretty strong. Sparkle liked him, but I just wanted to be alone…
“I’m Gamma Xavier’s kid from Crimson side, it’s an honor to meet you short stuff.” He said with a smile, reaching to shake my wrist. I shook it, “Name’s John.” He gave a toothy smile.
“I’m Heidi…” I said not knowing what else to say, or do around a boy.
The other boys crowded my table and shook my wrist too. They were the Jr Warrior unit. John was the Unit captain, even though he was a sophomore. He kept staring at me the entire time during lunch, and I didn’t like it, but they kept the mean looking girl away from me with the looks they gave that could melt ice.
The bell rang, and everyone, done or not, started throwing their things away. “I’m taking you home if you don’t mind?” Said John with a smile, jingling keys. Should I tell him I have a broom? This guy was from the other side of the pack… if they knew would they reject me as a friend? How was I going to explain the broom?
Sparkle took over. “Okay!” She chirped, filling me with dread. /What, he is cute./ She said innocently.
He chuckled, putting a hand on my shoulder, “Well at least your wolf likes me. See you after school short stuff,” he waved, leaving the Cafeteria.
The day went by too fast after that! The bells seemed to ring so quickly while I dreaded the afternoon so bad, I whined in my last class out loud, getting a few giggles from the other students. I buried my face in my book. I didn’t want to bother uncle over this, it was just a Warrior trying to be nice, but I had never ridden in a car with a boy! What if he wants to kiss me?!
/That is not how it works… I think./ Said Sparkle, trying to calm me down. She was probably right, and the bell rang one last time. It was time to go. I went to get my broom out my locker, but that girl was there.
“You’re here one day and you’re already in my big brother’s face. You’re like every other she wolf that swishes their ass in here!! I see behind that fake shy shit.” She sneered, closing my locker so that I couldn’t get my stuff…
“He came to me... I wanted to be alone, now if you’ll excuse me, Uncle will be upset with me if I get home late.” I say, pushing her arm out the way with enough force to scare her. I might have used a little magic thanks to Sparkle… But she didn’t look hurt. I had much more control than when I first escaped the coven.
“Jesse, that’s Alpha’s kid, we should leave her alone.” Whined one of her friends.
“Yeah I’m out.” Said the other.
“That’s my brother.” She hissed.
I should have scolded my wolf, but with them arguing with each other, I got a chance to leave. I didn’t care who her brother was, as long as it wasn’t John…
When I got outside, the clouds had rolled in and it looked like it was going to rain… It seemed like the Lady herself was intervening and I couldn’t help but go find John and take him up on his offer, seeing as the option to just run away was taken from me. He was already there outside in the parking lot in a small 2 seater red pickup. It looked old, but it sounded ok.
He beamed a toothy smile, almost showing his fangs and opened the door for me. “I thought you were going to run off with your broom, but the Lady really does answer prayer.” He said happily, but I almost didn’t trust it. It was just a ride… why was he so happy?
I sat in the car with him and he texted someone, before pulling out the parking lot. “Jr Warrior Martin is taking my sister home,” He said, tossing his phone in the glove compartment as there was a stream of text sounds coming from his phone.
“Ok…. Want to tell me about yourself lil matey?” He said, looking at me. even in the rain, his eyes were still sparkling.
Matey? Was he a fan of Bob the Sponge?
I told him how dad found me, and he said nothing, but pursed his lips. “I’m glad Alpha found you, and you landed here, or else I would have never found you.” He said with a small smile.
/I really like him./ Said Sparkle, but I didn’t get it, she didn’t trust anyone. He told me about himself, that he was from a long line of warriors, and that he was already stronger than his dad.
“I can’t wait until graduation when we get to fight for rank, I will be probably assistant Beta or even an actual rank!” He smiled, pulling into the garage.
I got out and walked into the packhouse with him, and hugged mom. She was reading the little pups Peter the Feline, and they all giggled. “Sorry I’m late, it was going to rain so I had to get a ride.” I say cheerfully. I heard a growl from Uncle Connor, and I didn’t understand wolf well, but I think he was calling someone to come into his office. It had to be John, because he went upstairs.
I hope I didn’t get him in trouble…
