Book 2 Chapter 27

John
“Your highness, you must go inside.” Complained Delta, and I reluctantly left. I wanted to help, but they were right. I closed the door, and there was a sharp object that immediately pierced the wood.
“For fuck’s sake.” Growled Garnet. He was naked, putting on pants, and getting a gun from under the couch. “There’s a panic room inside the stairs. Luna and Assistant Luna should already be in there.” He said with purple eyes.
I hated that I was basically treated like a pup… but compared to the age and skill of these guys I was, at least for now.
I walked to the stairs, and there was a click, followed by the sound of I think an air brake or something. They already knew I was coming by the looks of it. And I figured maybe there were security cameras.
Inside was a white walled room with a few chairs, but that was about it. It looked like a crawlspace, only about as big as a walk in closet.
“Son that was dangerous!” Yelled my mother, and Heidi looked to be upset as well. We haven’t talked about her wracked nerves from punishing my sister, but it was only because she didn’t want to. Now I had upset her with rash actions. I felt terrible.
“I’m fine.” I complained, but she shook her head.
“You’re as stubborn as your father.” She grumbled, and walked to the back of the wall. She knocked on it until she pushed it, and the wall flipped around to reveal a well lit tunnel.
“I’m so not.” I complained, following her, and holding my mate, who hadn’t said anything, though she was her wolf. Sparkle didn’t usually say much when Heidi was upset, so I left well enough alone.
“Where are we going Luna?” She asked.
“To the King.” She responded casually. “He will keep you safe.” She mumbled.
“I thought we were to see him Monday… it’s only Thursday.” I asked and she shook her head.
“In the past few days, we’ve been hunted by hunters, assassins, now wolves from our own pack. This is more than Just my son…” She said shedding a tear.
“They want me mother, you stay, and me and Heidi will go.” I told her honestly, and she shook her head.
“Yes mother, listen to little brother.” Sneered a man that looked like my twin. He was at the exit to the small tunnel, waiting for us...
I stood in front of my mother, but she put her hand on my shoulder, growling softly. With just her grip, she moved me aside like I was paper, and she snarled deeply at her oldest son.
“Let them pass son.” Growled mother, and he laughed.
“You would snarl at the boy you raised; you pick favorites mother.” He chuckled.
“Herrakken… you stopped being my son the day you plotted with Brutus.” She snarled again, her eyes were her wolf, and her claws were out.
“All he wanted was the Second Seat. I would have given it to him, and everything would have been fine.” He said casually.
“Then he would eventually be unsatisfied and vie for a thrown he cannot sit upon.” She snarled.
“Yes, and then I would be his second.” He mentioned casually, and he shifted to a wolf almost the size of my father… holy shit.
“Son go.” She commanded, but both me and my mate shook our heads.
“I may not be as big, but I can help!” I screamed and he laughed at me in wolf. He was waiting….
“Son… one of us today is going to die… and it will not be you.” She mumbled.
“Don’t say that!” I said shaking her shoulder, but she batted it away.
“Just GO!” She growled, linking I assumed was my father.
“Proteciana!” Yelled Heidi as my mother ran, and there was a small glow to her.
She shifted into a wolf just as big, and they clashed, though she didn’t have the title of Earthen One. She dodged his bites, but I knew …. If she made a single mistake, she could die.
I hesitated, but reluctantly I couldn’t just run past my brother with him fighting my mother… trying to kill her.
Son she will be fine I know you’re still in there, she’s resistant. Take the Blue SUV, the keys are under the seat. Linked my father.
Father…. Even still…She is not Earthen… I linked back.
…I know. He linked quietly.
I ran, putting Heidi into the front seat with me, and reaching under the driver’s side seat to get the keys. There was a grand in cash down there in a small envelope, and a small flip phone. I started the ignition, worried for my family, and worried for the pack. What would happen if he did kill my mother? Father would be too devastated to win any kind of fight… He may be banished, but he would be an Alpha… He plotted to kill his own family and the King…. The KING. I’m surprised they didn’t kill him. I could only assume that for the other guy to still be in power, that they didn’t get any evidence for such a bold declaration of treason.
I drove out the garage, seeing my father almost at the house, and there was a small explosion.
“John Turn Around!” Screamed Heidi, but I couldn’t… whatever happened would have been for nothing if he succeeded in getting his way. I pushed my foot on the accelerator, not waiting for the gate, breaking it to pieces. “Listen to me!” She cried shaking my arm, but I had no choice.
“I’m sorry Heidi… we Have to move! I feel like a coward, but mother was putting her life on the line so we could escape. If I turn back, it would be for nothing. “Dear Night Mother, if you hear the feeble prayer of your son, keep my mother safe…” I said looking out the window. The moon was out in broad daylight. It’s said she pleads the case for her mate at times like this….
-------Heidi-------
“Heidi, are you ok?” He asked me silently holding my hand, but I stayed motionless. It would break the magic.
I saw a vision of his mother being bit on the neck, and some of her skin became sand. She screamed as her mate rushed to her side, and her son ran away as his wolf. She looked really tired, but I knew she wasn’t dead. I saw the veins in her neck weren’t cut, but the skin and muscle was gone around them like a dotted line. Only the area where his teeth had touched affected her, because I had heard that his abilities were pretty much taken. My protection spell was broken, but at least it saved her.
He was upset, yelling at his son that was already gone, and nurses in their uniforms ran to his aide. The smiles on their faces told me that she would make it, though I still hated that my mother in law was hurt.
But still…. Thank the Lady.
“Your father has your mom, John. She’s ok.” I told him.
“You must have used your powers?” He asked with a smile, and I nodded. He slowed down the car after that, getting on the interstate. He was on high alert for about two hours until we finally let out a breath of relief. We stopped to get gas and snacks. And I decided it would be best if I went in. John’s eyes were a tad supernatural, wolf or human. His human formed eye color looked almost like a cat’s, and his eyes as his wolf pretty much glowed because they reflected back the light.
The clerk was an old, white haired man who smelled strange. Like smoke and a musk I couldn’t recognize. I thought it was best just to be quiet and get my things. If he was a hunter or supernatural, I couldn’t tell… he didn’t have any distinctive features I could see.
“Long time since I’ve seen a half witch….” He said suddenly, and I nearly jumped. I decided it was best to play dumb.
“No sir… I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I said very shyly, putting everything on the counter. It took everything I had not to run to the car and try somewhere else.
“No, don’t be scared, I’m just an old drake, livin’ a mortal life, in a mortal body.” He chuckled. “Though it’s almost about over.”
“Over?” I asked.
“Yup. Chonis is my name, though, in this life, people call me Joey. That’ll be $23.54 for the snacks, and you wanted $70 on pump 1, right?” He asked and I nodded.
“Um… have a good day.” I told him, and he nodded. I ran walked to the car with two bags of snacks, hoping that he wouldn’t ask why I looked so panicked.
I got into the car, and John looked at me suspiciously, but pumped the gas. He got in, and ate a beef jerky while getting back on the road. What was that that just happened… how did he know?! Even if he was ‘human’ he didn’t smell like a hunter, so he shouldn’t have been able to know that! My wolf whined.
“You know, I Do hear you.” He chuckled.
“It was just weird. He looked normal, but knew what I was… and claimed to be a dragon in a human’s body.” I told him.
“Oh? That sounds like the legend of Chonis, the Realm Maker.” Said John, though I looked at him blankly. “He was punished by the gods for creating the realm of the Horned One’s prison with a key, and hiding it so well even he can’t find it.” He said with a small frown and the hair on my neck stood up.
“I had never heard about that, but maybe then it shouldn’t have been me to go in… since now the Horned One knows where he is.” I said out loud, but John shook his head.
“I could only assume that that won’t do him any good, since he doesn’t know where it is.” He said seriously, and I stayed silent. I had probably ruined that man’s life by chance….
