Chapter 95

Kaiden
I hummed, walking down the stairs of the packhouse. It was early in the morning, and I had already got a call from Jerold that he would send me Noah and their new pup, a gravehound, to babysit. I never babysat a human, but it couldn’t be any harder than babysitting any other adult, right?
The doorbell rang and I shook wrists with both officers, who were in casual clothes today. Noah would only be here until he went to some minotaur summons, and didn’t trust other supernaturals around such a small pup and a human. Babygirl read the new emails for me in my chair, while I tried to make them feel at home.
I helped him put his things in the room next to me and babygirl’s, while their small pup, who looked about 4, clung to Noah’s leg like a small octopus. She was a shy pup, but didn’t smell wolf, she smelled more like a dog. However, she still reminded me of my pups. She had black hair and brown eyes that were filled with curiosity and timidness.
“Mini, why don’t you say ‘Hi’ to Alpha Kaiden and Luna Eclipse? He’s nice enough to help us unpack.” He pointed to me, and I smiled, which made it worse.
“No, they’re too scary.” She said burying her face into his neck when he picked her up. I felt a small pang in my heart hearing her words, and Noah saw my weakness.
He chuckled a bit. “She’s shy because she’s a gravehound, not a werewolf, though I suppose you’re her prince too since she’s a shifter.” He said with a smile. Her eyes lit up.
“You’re a prince?!” She said, looking excited. “Is there a princess?!” She almost let go of Noah. We both chuckled a bit.
“Yes, my mate, my sister, and our pups, but they left a few days ago.” I said with a small smile, tussling her hair. She giggled, and with their stuff unpacked, Noah sat on the bed to rest his arms.
I left her to calm down so I could help Eclipse, and she looked fairly comfortable. Connor and Shelly really did tackle a lot of the bureaucratic bullshit for me while I was out, because by now I would be agitated and on my second cup of coffee with babygirl. Now that I thought of it, Connor even organized the files on my computer and placed any relating document folders next to each program. I was in there until 10am, when I saw movement out the corner of my eye.
The small child peeped in the doorway, and I smiled, pretending that I didn’t see her. “Kaiden do you see Mini?” Eclipse said with a smile.
“I don’t see anyone.” I looked around. “But. If it was Mini, I bet she would like to go to the park later with the other pups her age.” I said with a smirk.
“It IS Mini!” She jumped up and down, no longer peeking at the door.
“Alright, let me get my keys.” I said getting up. The meeting with the other Alphas could wait. Eclipse got her bag and I heard growling from what sounded like a warrior.
I ran down the stairs, while babygirl talked with Mini. I sighed. It wasn’t even noon, and the man was about to get killed. What would I tell Jerold? I thought.
“I don’t know how you fucking do it; I wouldn’t have took his shit if he were my mate.” Said the warrior snarling.
“See?! Someone gets it!” He said, running his hand through his curly hair, “I told him I could handle myself but no, he treats me like a pup.” Noah said with a deep snarl, then took a sip of liquid. I made it my business to slow down now that I knew he wasn’t in danger. I almost had to remind myself he was human he was so good. He must have been practicing. I got to the bottom of the stairs to see everything was ok. I linked Eclipse that she could come down.
“You wouldn’t have done shit butterball.” Marcy said with a smile, picking up Ginger. “Jerold is right, what if someone tried to eat you, or hurt you when he wasn’t looking?” Said Marcy, who probably was the one who recognized him from last time.
“I always carry my gun, and I won’t taste good!” He countered. “I’m a minotaur’s mate, so I would taste Like Minotaur.” He said, drinking his orange juice at the table with them. I facepalmed. I thought he was about to get mauled.
“…. But they wouldn’t know that until they took a nibble of those lusciously golden curls.” Joked Marcy’s mate, leaving Noah a little pissed.
“Could you at least tell me you’re going to do shit like this first before you give me a heart attack?” I complained. No one said anything… I miss Connor, he would have had a sassy comment. “Anyway, I’m taking Mini to the park.” I said, turning to get my keys.
“I’ll drive.” He said cheerfully. I laughed because I thought he was joking. I turned to see he was serious. “What is it with Alphas and their precious cars anyway.” He grumbled.
I laughed harder and got into the car, making sure to buckle in Mini first. He pouted and sat in the back with her, while Eclipse rode in the front with me. The drive was short, but adorable, as Mini became obsessed with babygirl because she was a princess. She wanted to know all about the castle and the king. Honestly, they visit often, and I know gram gram would not mind one more pup to spoil.
She bolted out the car and ran to the swings with Noah walking behind her, and they played for a while before she found some other pups to play with. I could see she was a more submissive pup than the wolves her age, but that could have just been because she was shy. No one made fun of her, or questioned Noah with me around. I was pretty much enjoying spending time with my mate.
“They grow up so fast. She’s going to be a heartbreaker with those lashes and pout face.” He said sitting next to me. I hummed in agreement. I wondered if she would find her mate out in the world, or would it be a wolf.
Gravehounds are exceptionally rare, because they come from the souls of gravediggers and watchmen, or at least some do. They can be born as well, like her. They’re much smaller than wolves, and they usually live in packs watching over the souls of the dead in the cemeteries they originate from. It’s also said that a grave hound is created from being the first body buried in a cemetery. It’s why they used to bury animals first, especially black dogs, but now the practice has died down somewhat.
“Her pack must have been killed by headhunters?” I blurted out loud, actually meaning to keep that thought to myself.
“...No Alpha… a Rogue wolf did it. He didn’t even have a reason. Her pack was just a single mother and her 2 pups. I killed him myself. Earned a 2 week suspension for it too.” There was an awkward silence, before I said anything else. I clenched my fist. I looked at how happy she was, but it seems it’s always the weak that pay the price for the cowardly.
“Where was this?” I asked quietly.
“Northstone Cemetery, 50 miles south of BrightMoon pack. It was nothing anyone could do Kaiden, that’s why I never go anywhere without my pistol.”
/Alpha, we have new arrivals, a family and their stupid dog/. I got in a mind link from Horizon. There had been an influx of humans, and now after today, I had no idea what to do with them.
/Detain them in the nice holding area./ I linked. Ironic that this happened two days before the new fence and road gate was delivered. I sighed.
“Noah, you get to come with me to the prison, and babygirl…. Do you wanna watch Mini? This might get really bloody.” I say looking at her grossed out expression. I chuckled a bit and kissed her on the forehead.
“Come on, lil bit, it’s time to go!” Yelled Noah.
“Daddy no!” She pleaded. She pouted with those long lashes and I chuckled. Noah was right; whoever her mate was, would be in for trouble.
“Mini that won’t work on me and you know it!” He shouted. “It works on Jerold though.” He snickered to me and Eclipse quietly. I drove babygirl home and stopped by the coffee shop before interrogation time, Rakaam’s favorite activity besides eating. I hadn’t been there in a while, but the barista seemed calm enough. I got a black expresso, while the pipsqueak got an iced coffee. He practically bounced in the front passenger side seat, because apparently, this was on his bucket list.
When I got there, the new receptionist was alert. She was still on Bookface, I could see it reflected in her glasses, but she gave me a bow as soon as I walked in. “Good evening Alpha, the New arrivals are in 113.” She said very respectfully. She took a second look at seeing Noah, and I got her to print out a visitor badge for him.
“EEEEE” He squealed, walking slightly behind me. “I get to play Good Guard, Bad guard!” He exclaimed happily, striking a pose. I rolled my eyes. … How does Jerold manage?
“My Lady… you’re worse than my brother.” I complain with a chuckle.
“I’m going to have so much fun today, that I’m going to make Jerold jealous.” He hissed, sipping his iced coffee that smelled way too sweet.
“No. We are NOT making that bull man jealous, and this will not be fun.” I point a clawed finger at him and he rolled his eyes and started counting cell numbers. Everyone, including me, was shocked. I gave him a flick on the top of the head, and he squealed overdramatically. I made sure it didn’t hurt, I didn’t want him bruised. “Don’t disrespect me pipsqueak.” I gave him a small warning growl. His cheery attitude was a little annoying, but I kind of liked how overdramatic he was.
