Book 2: Chapter 13
John
You would piss yourself and die. Joked Terracotta and I glared at him.
“Good, I don’t hear you anymore, but since Heidi’s your mate, you will still hear her.” Said Gamma Branson, holding their pup. I didn’t even notice that she had come outside.
We went inside to see that my father and mother were talking with my adopted folks. They looked serious, but they stopped when they saw me. I was handed a huge plate of food from a warrior, and I sat at the table with them and my mate, who had been given a plate bigger than she was.
I also saw Luna’s parents and they had gifts for us. Someone also found the mating ceremony gifts that never got opened. “You guys didn’t have to do this!” Said my little mate, who was red as her hair. She was so easily embarrassed, and it made me chuckle, holding her hand.
“Yes we should! Open mine first!” Shouted Beta Connor, who had a big box, that landed on the table with a thud.
“Lady….” She said quietly, and unwrapped the big box. It was from Arrowzon. Inside was a wooden box, and when she opened it, there were at least 50 small glass vials with corks on them wrapped in bubble wrap.
“It’s an herb and potion holder! It even comes with a magic locking spell that only you can open.” He boasted proudly, and she looked so excited.
“Thank you!” she screamed getting up and hugging him. “I didn’t need this! You didn’t have to Uncle.”
I did need too, and you deserve it.” He said and he led her back to the table, and she opened Alpha’s next. It was a small bracelet that was delicate and intricately woven like a braid, with a red center stone. It was carved too, sporting the King’s crest.
“Dad … I can’t accept this. It must have costed a fortune.” She said quietly and he chuckled.
“It was a gift from the Elf King himself. Me and babygirl thought you would do best with it, seeing as you wear jewelry.” He told her, and she slipped it on. It matched her hair, and it made me happy for her. There was another gift, as well as the one that I had for her, but I would do that in private. That was the general custom.
Her aunt had given her a knife she could wear on her belt, and her grandparents gave her a book of recipes passed down through the family. It was a handmade copy, because I think Luna or her mother had the original. “I’ll cherish this with my life.” She whispered happily.
“I’m going to miss you.” Whispered her grandmother, and she hugged her. Everyone had a turn, and I got my cheeks pinched and hair ruffled. Lady damnit.
Heidi shed a few tears, and I held mine for her sake. I would miss this place. The wolves here were good, casual friends. They had a good Alpha, one who cared about their people. I think I would even miss my bed that was just a tad too small. I was thankful though, because my family decided to come with us. I thought they would have stayed with Alpha, but they swore oaths to serve my father. Once an oath is made, it cannot be broken.
Everyone was in a good mood, but it was time to go. We got into the car, and my father drove. My mother sat in the front, and Heidi was in the back with me. We had my father’s warriors trail us with the stuff inside their SUV’s. This drive was three hours, but it seemed to move in faster than I’d wanted. I looked at my mate, and held her hand gently, while I had my new paperwork in the other.
Heidi was quiet as a lamb. She looked sleepy but she was too nervous to go. I don’t know why, but I was genuinely concerned about her. She would be the only hybrid in the court… she would be the youngest member… yet have an impossibly high rank. The king made her a princess, and I held my new papers… I was a literal ‘lower prince.’ It meant that I was in the royal family, though I could not contend for the crown. Not that I would want to.
That in and of itself was dangerous. Wolves get jealous. Some she wolves now would be knocked down a peg, and they would be genuinely stronger than her by a mile. Some would also probably want to remove her… They are going to hate her. I didn’t care about myself; I could take it. I couldn’t take them making her cry. My wolf growled in my head and it made me growl. Heidi jumped.
“Is there a problem son?” Asked my father sternly. I could see him peering at me through the rear-view mirror.
“I’m fine, my wolf is just agitated.” I said without telling them my issue. I DIDN’T need my mate hearing that, she was already a timid wolf. She was also super small. No she wolf is going to take her seriously unless she pulls rank, and she wouldn’t do that. I linked him instead of saying it.
I Don’t think the other she wolves will treat her well… I told him.
I was thinking the same thing yesterday, but it won’t be the pack. He assured me, but I really didn’t want to hear it. Jesse nearly ruined my mate’s reputation, and she was my sister. I couldn’t imagine the hazing that would happen if I wasn’t around her with older, more experienced she wolves. Her grandfather would not allow that. Chimed in my wolf, and I agreed. It settled me somewhat, though I was still suspicious. It wasn’t about what they would do around those who held rank, it was what they would do if they saw her alone.
“Alright.” Said father snapping me from my thoughts. “No behaving like a wolf, no eye flashing, no noises, this is a mostly human airport, but we are riding on a goblin owned section.” He said sternly.
The Airport was full of supernatural creatures and humans. I had lived my entire life on Crimson side of the pack… It was my first time seeing humans. They smelled strange. A mixture of weakness and prey animal. Some wore smelly oils and lotions that flooded my nose. I didn’t mind the sweaty ones, they just smelled like the guys after a workout with Alpha. Although, it was much lighter scented than that.
I worried for our safety, as I heard that the humans had tried to take my mate the last time she was on a plane. Though now, we were escorted by at least 15 warriors and my father was an ancient. We took up about half the plane if I thought about the other creatures in line. They were also wolves. They were pack members of Lapis, and many nodded to me as discreetly as possible when they saw us. There were also about three priests, though they were in line to get on a different flight. Thank the Lady.
Heidi and everyone else seemed casual, as they had done this before. My hand was held gently, and I looked to see it was my mate who comforted me. I was nervous, and the sounds and bright lights were not helping. She rubbed my knuckles in little circles, and I got to the gate. It was my turn to go through the detector. This too was something I had never done before. I took off my dog tag, and immediately got a headache.
I could hear nearly every wolf’s thoughts at the same time. This thing Beta gave me was protecting me in more ways than I had thought. I played it off as best as I could, but I know I got a few stares from a group of humans.
I have no idea what language father spoke, but it sounded old. The faces of the warriors became serious as we boarded the plane with these guys. I had screwed up, though I should have expected as such. I was grateful I was around my fellow wolves. I felt squished in the first class section, but at least there were no screaming babies like in the back. When I sat down, I sat next to Heidi.
“That’s my seat.” Snarled a human man. I looked at my ticket to be sure while he tapped his foot impatiently. There was a little swirl in the top right corner of the flight number, but he was right. I glared at him. The middle aged man was balding, but his blue eyes were electric. He looked like he was up to something, but I couldn’t tell what. He wore a vest with an ax logo on his jean jacket, and he swayed a little bit. He smelled like he had been drinking, but I noticed something around his neck. He had a fang necklace. He grinned when he noticed
I glared at him, standing up. “Listen good, little human.” I whispered in his ear, but he only grinned. “You are unarmed, and I am not. I will wait until we’re ten thousand feet in the air and go on a mother Fucking Rampage if you say Anything to my mate. Or you can switch seats with me, your choice.” He seemed to think long and hard about it before sitting next to my mate. I was separated from her, and I sat next to a mortal woman who looked afraid of me. She had the same logo on her shirt, so that must have been their tribe crest.
