Chapter 39

Kaiden
“Do you hear that?” Connor asked,
I listened hard, but I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.
“It sounds like peace. Why not go out?” He encouraged finishing his tea before I did.
“No, she’s injured, she needs me.” I mumbled.
“I can watch the pack.” He pointed to himself.
“Even my wolf disagrees.” I grumbled.
“How long as it been since you let Rakaam out?” It was rare for him to be serious like this… I had to smell ready to shift.
“Since I killed Wade.” I said moving a stray frizzy strand out her face... I carried her upstairs, and he followed behind. I didn’t know why Connor did that, but he wasn’t one to take a long time to get to the point. I put her in bed, and we both stood just outside my room. He poked me in the side, which made me flash my teeth at him.
“Cut it out Beta.” I whispered holding a growl.
“See? You know how you get when you’re hungry.” He said with a smile, and I sighed. He was right, but I didn’t want to admit it. There was also the fact that he Knew I would be putting my mate to bed, and proceeded to poke me while going down the stairs.
“You do realize at one point I Have to leave her earshot right?” I asked, and he hummed in confirmation.
“Yup.” He said smugly.
“I’m going to get you.” I said as a warning.
“Yeah but I figure all the noise I’d make from you attacking me would wake Luna.” He said knowing damn well that he was right again.
“Damnit.” I grumbled, leaving out the packhouse, and I had no choice but to leave him alone for now.
“Go Alpha. I’ll stay in the packhouse to watch the place. You need to eat, and you need to chill.”
“I’ll get you back later.” I said menacingly over my shoulder. I had no idea what, but I’ll figure it out.
I shifted, running toward the forest, but I didn’t snarl like I usually do. This was in case someone was waiting for me to leave, but either way, they would meet Me. Connor’s only job was to do things in my stead if I wasn’t around besides be my general backup… I wondered did he worry about what I had planned for him; if that was the case it would be enough. What he’d done was just be a little brother, nothing worth fighting over.
I’d probably flick him on the ear or something for damn near stabbing me in the side, and I agreed with Rakaam that that would be fair. To do nothing would only make him worse.
It didn’t take long for me to scent the smell of a rabbit. It would be pretty much a mouthful of fur for me, and for that I would leave it alone. But I scented something else. I scented female she wolves and blood. It wasn’t a Rogue, but whoever it was, was from Crimson. The packs were just separate enough to still smell like two distinctive packs, but that would disappear in a few days so long as it didn’t rain yet.
I howled dominance and it was returned with loyalty, though I would still investigate. I bounded through the trees, and they’d killed a large bull elk, but none were eating it as their wolf. They were naked, butchering it while talking among themselves and packing it up on an ATV likely for the packhouse fridge, and I figured I’d help. They were doing it all wrong though, because it seemed the trio were pretty green. It was only half skinned, with it gutted, but not hung up. That kind of game would be a bit much for them in their human form anyway. I figure it was because they’d taken down such large and swift game, but had no more strength left.
I shifted, and they bowed their heads. They were she wolf Warriors by the scent, with the tallest being the blonde one, the brunette was the shortest, and the gray haired one was somewhere in the middle.
“His highness graces us.” Said the brunette one.
“I am Alpha; I have no desire for your groveling so low.” I said walking over to the elk, rummaging around to find some rope, and tied its back legs up. I threw the rope over an old oak, and lashed the end around the tree’s base.
“Thank you, Alpha.” Said the three in unison.
“Alpha, I see you’re still without a mate.” Said the blonde one and I let out a warning snort.
“I have found my mate; maybe you should find your place.” I glared.
“Forgive Unit Captain Sarah Alpha, she’s been out all day and must have hit her head on patrol.” Said the gray haired one swiftly while the brunette elbowed her in the side. I decided the gut punch was enough. There was no way that she wolf would take my mercy for flirting.
“The meat would have an off flavor if you don’t remove the innards and the glands. And the blood would pool in the chest and abdomen on its side like that. It isn’t cold enough yet for mistakes.” I grumbled, getting the hunting knife from them and skinning it myself.
Deer of any kind really do shed a lot, and it’s hard to keep the stray hair off the meat. We were also in the wild, so they wouldn’t have to wash it off as much later… but at least they didn’t pierce the stomach, kidneys, or bladder. That bile makes the meat taste awful, and there was really nothing you could do to fix that once it’s done.
I cut it into large pieces, and they left me with the leg. They bowed leaving; two shared the ATV while their unit leader, the blonde one gave me one last look before shifting and running off into the woods. I couldn’t remember her name; but I think she lived at the Crimson side packhouse.
They likely were doing a food run for Derrick, and I was doing so for myself. I decided to roast it, and it took no time to make a fire. I did it responsibly though, clearing the dead leaves and surrounding it with rocks. I then put a stick through it and turned it evenly. I also made sure to set up a little bit away from the bits they left on the ground that nobody wanted, and I watched a bear eat it in the distance while I watched the fire flicker. I didn’t hunt, but I did get out. Also with my wolf full, I could think a little bit more clearly.
I had double the pack now… double the work, and also double the wolves that needed protection… twice as many pups as there will be paperwork… and twice as many warriors, with double the border.
The sound of still forest calmed me. For now, no Rogues dared, but soon they will… because now I had more for them to gain if they come to challenge, and more for them to steal should they only come for trouble.
I made my way back to the shopping district of the pack, and everyone bowed who saw me… I was tired and stiff… I should be resting and trying to relax Rakaam, but it wasn’t happening.
Had I just Used my power… I’d be mindless out there even now most likely, but she would have never been hurt… No matter what anyone said, this was My fault. My hesitation almost got her killed.
“Hi Alpha!” Shouted the coffee shop owner. I didn’t remember his name, but he seemed to sense my wolf’s… aggression.
“Hey.” I said gruffly, giving him permission to raise his head. He was an Omega; there was no need to be aggressive towards him.
“Mind having the free cup of tea I just made? Warrior Bennet didn’t want three.” He said cheerfully.
“This is a trap.” I smirked.
“Yes, it is. You look about ready to burn the pack down.” He said putting it on the table, the spot where me and babygirl had our first ‘date’ if you could call it that… “Your job is to protect us… and for that I don’t think I’ve ever gotten to thank you for it.” He slid the tea in front of me gently. I could scent he was excited as he was nervous… but I took a sip. I trusted Babygirl’s friend.
I hated that this tea wasn’t bitter.
It had too much cream and sugar, the way babygirl likes it… but it had… a lavender and chamomile flavor. “Are you trying to use herbs and oils to soothe the savage beast?” I chuckled.
“No, but that really is a new flavor I’m trying out. It’s Blue lavender and black chamomile. I imported them both from France.” He smiled proudly. “I was thinking of using the flowers to make a house blend of Earl Gray tea called ‘after hours.’ What do you think?” He asked.
“…. not bad, but I don’t like sugar and cream…. BUT, I bet the off-duty Warriors would love this.” I said giving my honest opinion.
My compliment made him basically bounce off the walls. He hastily showed me a sign he’d already made, but now at the bottom, hastily scribbled in marker was ‘Alpha Approved’…. I held a chuckle for his sake.
The little Omega was Weird, but he was a good weird….
