Book 3: Chapter 94

Someone would think that they were walking into an underground studio apartment division with a communal living room on the first floor, like Atto’s farm, especially since the build is new. None of this would have ever been possible without the Moon Goddess and Harmony.
And I know… I know I was reformed more than I initially thought… because Dark Witches by nature are almost as bad as vampires.
/Damn right we were./ Scoffed Theo playfully. /These humies would already be experimented on. I’m thinking with all that wyvern venom, we could develop potions-/
I cut her off, and focused on talking to one of them. It so happened that the latest donator was escorted back to his cell, and I intercepted. His dark brown hair was buzzcut, but that’s a standard everywhere to keep things clean.
“I wish to speak with that one.” I said firmly.
“Pat him down.” Said Zayde, giving me the reigns.
He did not judge, nor try to stop me. He may be the coven’s leader, but I am not his lesser. We give and take together, something that does not happen in other covens…. But with his command, there wasn’t any fuss or resistance. Nobody tried to stop me and say something like ‘oh the dainty lady mustn’t talk to bad bean humans.’
/Oh WhatEver./ Snorted Theo.
/I forgot I have an audience./ I complained.
/If he flinches I’m eating him./ she giggled, knowing full well that he was unarmed.
They allowed him to enter his apartment. They have their own cell to themselves, but mingling is allowed during daylight hours. There was only one male for every 9 females. I Know what we’re doing is unsustainable for mass Meat Market production, but what we have here is artisan.
It will make money even though that’s not really the plan here, because supernatural creatures Have to eat Something. Plus, there are many like Casey who WANT to have cruelty free meat and blood. Well blood, I don’t know if we’ll necessarily need meat other than sacrifices.
“Be careful mistress, this one was formally wild.” Warned Mr. Archer, letting me in.
I met him before I slept, and he is one of Atto’s vampires. I trusted them, but I wanted to do this by myself, in case Zayde was a little intimidating.
“I’ll be fine.” I said to the lanky, dark-skinned vampire.
Mr. Archer held his hair in a poofy, curly ponytail about as big as a grapefruit, but it was tied tightly. He came because Casey is his ‘sister’. It was the vampire lord’s request, and we honored it without issue.
Zayde’s eyes were pretty intimidating now, and I knew I made the right call.
The human said nothing, simply going inside and sitting on his made bed.
“What’s your name?” I asked, sitting at the small table in his cell. There was a sink, bathroom, and a small cart with books. It almost looked like an apartment, if not for the surveillance in the room.
“3-15-4B.” he said honestly, in English. “It used to be Tomas Edwardo, from Los Vagus.”
“Alright Tomas… How was life like when you were free?” I asked. I don’t care about the rule of calling them numbers...They’re still people.
He chuckled, thinking of a fond memory. “Hectic… stupid….” He sighed. “I listened to my brother. “Dad’s done it his whole life, and it put food on the table.” He said. Hector was right too. When we were kids, we didn’t want for anything…. But … I knew it was wrong. I didn’t know *what* he was doing…. but that whatever it was, was evil… and one day, that evil came to my home. I helped skin the bears they were poaching and all. As time went on, it got harder, both finding bears, and finding a place to sell ‘um… I didn’t even think about how small a few of them were the week before it all went to shit. It even paid all my debts…. But then… one day it caught up to me, and nobody cared. The ‘bears’ had kids too…. And they killed ‘um.”
“And you were taken into custody.” I said as he nodded. I made sure to sound kind, but I would not become emotional or show empathy around these vampires. They’ll take it as an insult to their hospitality.
After all, in the eyes of the vampires, they are treating them like royalty. This is as close to free as they can probably get.
“They …. They killed Margie in front of me…, after they broke my legs, then threw me in a soggy dungeon. The police took my girls from me, and locked me up. They should be 18 and 16 now.”
“I assume since you’re still living as a male, they made you a breeder at the other facility?” I asked, remaining neutral. I know it hurts that he’s away from his kids, but they’re alive. They’re with someone who won’t make them hunters either….
“Yes ma’am… But there was nothing pleasant about it. I donated all I was….I never saw the women, nor the children… I …. I’m glad I’m here.”
“Why is that?” I asked, wanting to hear him say it.
“…. Because … if this is the best I’ll ever get… this is probably the best case.” He said honestly. “If I knew or not didn’t matter… I helped them kill those werewolves’ kids by making their hides profitable…”
“Do you know where you are now?” I asked.
“I heard the vampires here answer to witches, and I’m somewhere in the rain forest, but that’s it.” He said honestly.
“You are. You are in the custody of Dark Witches, who hail the Horned One.” I said with a light smile.
“oh no… I *knew* there was something up.” He said with actual fear. Mr. Tomas was nervous, and rightfully so. Our reputation… and actions make us heavily feared, even with the Sanctuary decree.
“You have my word that so long as you follow rules, you’re safe.” I said with a smile.
“… I believe that.” He said looking at the floor. He didn’t, but he wasn’t making problems. That’s good enough for me.
“Good. Inspections like this will be random and frequent. Thank you for your participation.” I said as I stood.
I shook Tomas’s hand, and left out.
“Casey, summon the other vampires, and Micael. I want to share my notes.” I said nicely, but formally.
Running a coven was second nature, but I still wanted to make absolutely sure that we weren’t missing any details. Zayde and I are ultimately responsible should the law be broken, and I would rather not deal with the King’s Council, nor the Yoltier.
I sat in Casey’s office, and additional chairs were gotten from the offices of the other vampires. Micael… he looked like he was born and raised in a coven now. If someone told me that they were human last year, I’d have laughed.
Zayde spoke first.
“Grandfather agreed to meat farm conditions. We may do as we please with them come time to cull, but until then, they are not to be harmed.” He said leaning back. “From what I see, conditions have been met, but what say you my lady?”
“I agree.” I smiled. “The human told the truth, but we will always be watching.” I said it as a warning. “With the way the wyverns were initially treated, there will always be eyes on us. Even if not, I still prefer happy, healthy people.”
“You have our word on this.” Said Mr. Archer. “The humans taste better when they feel free, are treated with kindness, and they aren’t shown their place *too* much.”
“On that note, what is your protocol for the unruly?” I asked.
“Lord Kaiden of the Wolves, back in 2028 released standards for mortal care based on his prison. It’s been revised a little bit since, but we follow the guidelines. They have 3 meals a day, access to a work area, and mental enrichment in the form of games, and select media played from 5pm to 11pm.”
“I put on mostly travel, learning, or cultural segments. They learn to read as well if they can’t, though the ones we selected could already.” Said Mr. Edwardo, a vampire from Chillie.
“Good.” I said ignoring Theo. She wanted to Leave Now but there wasn’t any rush.
/There IS!/ She complained. /What’s the FIRST thing both animals and people do after hibernation?!/
