Book 2 Chapter 31
Heidi
“I’ll call Alpha Wisp when I get to the prince.” She said, hugging me tightly. I almost felt more like I was saying goodbye to a child, than a friend, or as the court would think: a servant.
“Be safe and remember what Uncle Connor looks like. You can’t miss him; he’ll be the tallest man in the airport with almost yellow eyes and black hair with a white stripe in the middle. He looks scary but you can trust him, I promise.” I said with a small smile, letting her go. We went inside after that, and Alpha Wisp called a personal chauffeur to pick us up, who came in less than a half hour.
I hated that we had to leave Ann on the plane with pretty much strangers, but she was too new of a wolf to be around the High Council. It was the one thing that Alpha Wisp said that was probably the most dire, as they would probably kill her if she came. That or manipulate her somehow.
I was safe only because the King saw favor on me as a child, and it would be ‘going too far’ to touch me. But if I wasn’t, there was a chance that I would be a target too. I was half. There was a large amount of the court who believed that only pure wolves of high birth should be on the council. Most of the original odd numbered seats to be exact. I assume that if John’s father was like them, he would have forced him to have a mark mate.
Both the council seats frowned at me, both my mate, and Alpha Wisp. “You shouldn’t say that. Granddaughter or not, your mating ceremony is not complete…. There will be many ears that itch for any weakness. Be confident little one.” He warned, and I nodded my head.
“Heidi I only want my true mate; you know this. Those kind of what ifs hurt you know.” Said John with a small frown, and I hugged him gently.
“Sorry.” I said sheepishly. He was My mate, soon I would be around she wolves who crave power. And they could make trouble.
“Don’t worry about it. We’re here.” Said Alpha Wisp, pointing to the lights that grew in the distance.
I recognized the wolf run city that the King ruled, and John looked amazed. He had never seen, nor smelled so many of the elders in one area, and most of the residents either served the King directly or worked behind the curtains. Many were more than old enough to rule somewhere, though they chose to serve in one way or another. Even the Omegas here were strong, about the strength of the average wolf. They also lived in the sparkling town, as only the officials and the King had rooms here.
We pulled to the gate, as there was a large black decorative fence that surrounded the castle, along with a thick toll gate and guard who was as strong as an elder. He saw Alpha Wisp and bowed, pushing the button and the gate was opened without any issue. Usually, those who enter must state their reason for their visit, as well as present their papers to come within the inner wall, but there was no need. I thanked the Lady, because we still didn’t have our paperwork.
Should we thank the Dark Father too…? Asked my wolf. I told her to be Quiet! No one needed to know that, but I could only assume since Alpha Wisp didn’t say anything, he probably already knew. I tried, but when I get into the castle, there were magical items still in my ward locked room. It was grandma’s idea for me to put a magic lock on the door since she knew I was coming back.
Wolves can’t perform magic, and even if they could, they would have had to give grandpa a really good reason as to why they were on his floor. I saw that the moment we arrived we already had grandma waiting for us outside the door, and I couldn’t wait for the car to park. “Can you go a little faster?” I asked the driver, but he looked like he saw a ghost.
“Young lady, if I speed in front of her majesty, I’ll be fired.” He complained and I huffed. He was probably right. She was always… the tiniest bit overboard with her pups’ protection.
The moment I did get out the car, I got out and ran up to her, getting a bone crushing hug, and she patted my head. “My smallest pup returns.” She said cheerfully, and then looked at John, who came out the car with a bow. “Come here.” She commanded happily, most likely giving his soul protection from grandpa. She did me too, but Sparkle was used to the King.
“Hey what about all the other pups, I’m the biggest!” I hugged, and she nuzzled her face in my hair.
“Yes, I suppose so, for now.” She ruffled my hair, and I grinned wide. I really did miss and love my grandma, and I could only guess she was referring to how they would be huge wolves.
“I missed you!” I yelled happily, and I was picked up high in the air. Her wolf looked like she wanted out, but Falcon was worse than grandma. I was squeezed like I was going to pop. They loved babies, and to her I was a pup.
“Your Majesty. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Said John formally with a deep bow.
“Stop that!” She started shoving us inside. “We have a gift for you two; it’s upstairs. Oh, and thank you Esmond, I almost forgot you were here.” She said cheerfully, and we followed. This place always gave me good memories, but I was glad I left. I might not have found John at the right time, because he would have been flooded with responsibilities here. I didn’t share that information with him though, as he looked like he was amazed, soaking in everything, and I didn’t want to spoil his mood. We walked silently, while grandma hummed cheerfully.
Everyone made way for her as she glided across the grand reception area, and up the stairs where at the top was grandpa. He met us halfway, getting bows from everyone, as wolves downstairs that saw him stopped what they were doing until he raised his hand. We were less casual with him because I didn’t think he liked it. I sometimes had a hard time figuring out his mindset, but he stood there quietly, holding a neutrally stern gaze. That gaze went to John, but he meant nothing by it; I recognized that face he made, as it was his default.
I also saw that the King was in just bike shorts, smelling as if he’d just shifted. We arrived after his afternoon patrol. Nothing ever happened here, but he was an Alpha and a king; he would ensure there was peace. He had probably gone upstairs to change. But he didn’t care about clothes, though gram-gram would scold him sometimes.
“Your Highness.” John and Alpha Wisp both said with a bow. I did as well, but when I rose, he had a small smile. The other two remained submissive, as it was custom to stay that way until he released them.
Alpha Wisp cleared his throat. “I have escorted them here your majesties. They’ve had quite the adventure, and I am proud that I was part of it.” He said with a small frown.
“Yes, rest Esmond; you have done well. You have my thanks and favor.” He said, putting his hand on his shoulder for him to rise. There were gasps from those within earshot, and there was a small rush of whispering among all the servants and even any council members who just so happened to be around.
“Sir, I am not worthy of such a gift… I only perform my station.” He said completely shocked, but grandfather shook his head.
“Nonsense.” Growled grandma, and grandpa put his massive hand on her shoulder gently.
“Be calm my mate. Do not question my decision Wisp.” His flaming eyes did that thing when he starts to get mad. They looked like they were on fire, and they got a little darker. “You shall receive this regardless, for there are those who would not have been so honorable.” He said sternly, and he walked a few steps down to us, kneeling to our eye level. He sniffed John, then rose back to his towering full height. Grandpa was the biggest supernatural creature I’d ever seen. John was nervous, but stood tall. If he were a weak wolf, he would probably be on the floor.
“He looks like his father, doesn’t he?” Said grandma, and the king nodded with a deep hum.
“Yes, but he does not shave his head. Pups grow too soon.” He said with a blank face, but I could tell he was happy as a clam. Wolves live within, and even though he was born the wolf, he had trouble with expressions.
“My mate, I agree.” She said with a small frown, putting a firm pat on my shoulder. I saw a vision. She was angry in the courtyard outside, before Uncle Jerold and grandpa destroyed all her nice statues. But I saw another flash of her enraged being calmed by a white haired woman…. “What a fine young lady you have grown to be.” She smiled.
“Thank you, grandma.” I said stumbling over my words for a second. She ignored it, and we began to go upstairs together, while the Fourth Seat took his leave. I would ask her about this much later… when we were alone.
Alpha Wisp went downstairs to I assumed his quarters. He was given two rooms as a council member, so he could relax, while we went all the way upstairs to the King’s. There was no greater honor than being up here, and he let me keep my room. I should have been two floors down, but he seemed as if he had already made up his mind on this.
