Book 2 Chapter 19
John
I opened the door to the packhouse, and it looked like a warrior was in the way of the long staircase that went to my father’s office. “Excuse me.” I said a little annoyed, he should have sensed that I was coming his way, but he continued to talk on the phone.
“Hold on a second. Yeah?” He asked.
“Move aside.” I told him, trying to be polite, but he got back on the phone. I growled at him, and he hung up.
“The fuck’s your problem kid? Office hours are 7am to 6pm. Whatever it is, it can wait until then. It’s 5:40.” He growled, and I growled back at him.
“I was told to meet my father in his office at 6.” I snarled.
“Alpha Ronitus would have told me that.” He snarled back. he was disrespectful, but I would give him one more warning. Alpha always said give 3.
“If you do not stand aside, you will regret it.” I snarled. It had now drawn a crowd, since I had a bad habit of sounding like an Alpha. He looked fearful for a second, but he returned to his glare.
“And what are you going to do?” He asked and I’d had it.
I grabbed him by the shirt and tossed him out the packhouse, breaking the nice double doors. I marched up to the top of the stairs, and I was about to knock, but I heard was a slow clap from inside. “You pass, but barely.” Said my father.
“But honey we can work with this.” Said my mother, who looked really tired. I pursed my lips at seeing her like that…. It made me feel guilty.
“What did I do wrong?” I asked, and he looked at me dead in the eyes.
“Nothing other than being green son. I wished you were more stern with the pack, as they are not used to this kindness, not even from your mother. Though your hand was gentle, your voice was clear. You sound like an Alpha already; it makes me proud.” He said with a puffed chest. That was his wolf’s doing. He motioned for me to sit next to him at his computer, and I felt like an ant. The man could probably rip his shirt if he flexed too hard. I also wondered had he accidently killed someone before.
“Do you want the long or the short of that answer son?” He asked with a raised eyebrow. Short screamed my wolf.
“Long.” I said just to piss him off. He snorted, and my father cracked his knuckles.
“Well, about what…. six or so thousand years ago, when I first received my blessing, it really was the end of the world. The King had just risen to power, defeating his father, but I was as green as you are now. I was one of the few wolves who could fake a good human form. We were hungry, hunting was terrible, but we had a little money. Phillip…. He Loved all things mortal, even mated one, but he was too…. Pale. The man is as white as paper… he is a Frosted One. But Anyway… King Ashital was too…. Strange. Phillip too pale… and I was well…. too” He chuckled. I did too.
“…. I’m not going to say it dad.” I elbowed him. I didn’t want to say it, but he ruffled my hair. My parents were ebony skinned, but I was lighter. I also didn’t want to say something offensive. I knew from stories that the Frosted ones came from the mountains of Europe, as did the king, though the Queen was southern Nigerian.
“We were in The High North. No one in the tribe we traded with had ever met someone from Africa before. I was born in what’s now northern Niger, in the desert. I was the first wolf to be born human of my line, and the first Earthen One. I went from being one of many, to the only really quickly. I met your mother in Syria, though she was from an ocean port town in what’s now Ghana.” I listened intently. I never heard any of this about my family.
“You met me in Mesopotamia.” She corrected.
“Fuck I’m getting old.” He grumbled.
“What happened next?” Said my wolf taking over temporarily, and my father shook his head.
“Well Terracotta, I traded with them, but one of them caught on to me. The human saw me talking to my wolf, and he tried to stop me… I was also carrying about 50 pounds of supplies in one basket, and casually eating in the other… I’m also 7’1 and 325 pounds. The average human back then was only about to my belly button….so I gave myself away. He grabbed my tunic, and I broke his ribs by swatting him away. He died on impact with a wall, and all Hells broke loose. I had to kill at least 10 humans, meet up with the pack, and we ran. It was easier to just move on than to kill them all… it was a waste of meat though.” He sighed.
“That they happily traded with my mate was a wonder, because at first they thought he was half giant.” Said my mother.
“We were just dumb kids back then, trying to save the world. Ah, finally the system’s up.” He said, showing me the High Council members when he logged in. He made me one as well, as I was his heir. It would be activated after I saw the King for the first time, and receive his blessing if he would give it to me.

I woke up, stretching, feeling the bed was cold on John’s side. I sighed, and went to make myself some coffee, but I nearly jumped out of my skin. Jesse was making it for me it seemed, and there was fresh laundry folded on the couch.
“Hurry up human, let’s get this over with so I can clock out.” She grumbled not noticing me.
“Don’t treat Ann that way.” I said firmly, and she scoffed, slamming a mug on the table and pouring me black coffee, then she went to wash dishes.
“Oh sorry ‘your grace’, I didn’t know she was supposed to get special treatment.” She scoffed, throwing a wet sponge at me. It bounced off my face, hitting me with the stench of dirty dishes in my nose. I wiped my face with my sleeve, and let out an agitated sigh. I figured she would act like this without John…. But I couldn’t let her treat Ann like that after she helped us. She chose us over her own people. It would be atrocious to treat her poorly.
“That was uncalled for! Ugh…I will give you one warning. If I ever catch you mistreating her again, I’ll tell John.” I said sternly, taking Ann’s hand to get her away from Jesse. Wolves didn’t really Get warnings, they usually punished to get the point across… so I would have to get creative. I didn’t want to do something rash, like dad… he really liked whipping people. I was going to punish her… but all I could think of was my time at Emerald…. How terrible it was …. How awful I felt when they pushed me around.
But this is not Emerald…. This was Lapis… said my wolf quietly disagreeing with me.
“Whatever. Are you taking her with you or not? I don’t want to pupsit the damn thing.” She said disrespectfully, and before I knew it, I had her by the ear.
“She isn’t a Thing. She is a Person with fucking feelings Agatha!” I snarled, tossing her against the cabinets then I took two steps back… She coughed, but was otherwise unphased since I was so much weaker than her. My hands tingled, and my hair started to stand up on its own.
“Sorry Heidi I went overboard.” She said backing away from me, and I ran out the house. Ann chased me, but there was no way she could keep up, even if I wasn’t all wolf.
“Wait!” She yelled out of breath. I didn’t respond, but I did stop. I didn’t know what to tell her, and we were awkwardly silent for a while.
“I’m sorry I freaked out.” I told her, looking at my hands. I almost killed her. I wished that she wouldn’t fucking push me. I don’t think I would forgive myself if I killed someone. My hands were covered in small pulses of static… I closed my eyes tight to calm down, and after a little bit it did work…. I hoped no one saw that.
“No, you just need air…. I know how that feels.” She said grabbing my hand. She dragged me along until I walked with her, and then she let me go. Where we were going, neither of us knew, but she was right. I did need air. I needed to get away from the toxicity of my brother’s adopted sister.
“…. I almost killed her by accident. People don’t understand that when you have magic powers… it’s like being a bottle. If there’s a crack in it, you leak…. And I’m full of them.” I admitted. We got looks as we walked. Anastasia was very much human smelling, but wolves left us alone.
We walked in silence again for a second, because it seemed she was trying to find her words. “Well, from what I see, your mate should help with that right? Let’s go find him.” She told me with a small smile.
“Why are you so…. Nice?” I asked her. She shook her head.
“Your mate defended me from being eaten, and now you stopped your own kind from treating me like well… like I expected. I owe you guys. Also, I can tell you’re genuine.” She said calmly, holding a dark bruise on her arm. She looked like she was trying to hide it… and I wouldn’t bother her about it… I knew who did it. Jesse went too far. I wasn’t all fired up anymore, but I did need my mate. I still felt on edge. He would calm me, but I had no idea where he was.
