Chapter 18
Eclipse
I woke up to the smell of fresh food, and a wolf whose blood was on Alpha a day ago. I also smelled Alpha, so I looked for him. Every time I shift, my senses get stronger. Every time, I also feel myself getting more attached to Alpha Kaiden. The pull of the wolf makes emotions, senses, and connections with my wolf stronger. We are 2 parts of the same soul, for 2 parts of the world around us.
He was in his office, and there was a teenage boy in the corner of the room. He looked at the corner of the floor, sad, and scared. I don’t think I had ever seen someone so broken. Was he the one who fought Alpha and broke his hand? I don’t really remember the scent, but it most likely was. Shimmer was mad that he was around, seeing as how he hurt our mate, but I saw that he needed help. He was scared and alone in a new place, with the man who shed his blood, with no remorse. He was probably in the corner far away because he didn’t want to make him angry.
I gingerly walked up to him, and I said hi. He was completely spooked, startled that someone would give him the time of day. I just wanted to help him as best as I could. “My Luna.” He stuttered, looking down more. I felt bad for him.
“What’s your name?” I asked
“…Matt” he said quietly.
“What happened?” I asked
He told me, and I felt compassion for him. He lost his pack similarly to how my parents lost theirs…It was part of why even though I’d never met a human, I don’t think I’d want too. I was more than sure that most were fine; I did see them all the time on TV, in books, the news, and so on, but they were a threat to our way of life…
“You’re safe here.” I told him, and he nodded quietly.
“Yes Luna.” He said with a small bow. I didn’t like it… I wished he would calm down. Of all the wolves in the packhouse, I’d be the least likely to do anything to him, but I could empathize. I was mated to the most likely wolf who Had and Would hurt him again….
Shimmer was still upset, she could not understand why someone would challenge Alpha. I heard a loud nose exhale from my mate, a way of asserting a small amount of dominance without growling. I’d never heard him do that before, but it was something I knew. The ranked wolves used wolfspeach so much I was thankful that I took it from middle to high school. That was mandatory.
“I’m sorry to hear that.” He said quietly. “I wouldn’t wish what the Hunters did to anyone.”
He held his arm, looking up at me and I noticed that it had been amputated. The pack cares for its own, though he would never get warrior duties because of it. I would have asked him more questions, but I didn’t want to push him. He seemed like he had been through enough. He was very quiet after that; I think because of Alpha’s warning. I wondered what had Kaiden done to him to make him so afraid to be in the same room with him…
“Do you have any skills?” said Alpha, not looking from his desktop, typing away.
“Beta Daniel taught me accounting and secretary work.” He said shyly.
“You will be Delta Roberts assistant.” He said bluntly, linking someone. My guess was Delta. I had never met the man, but for him to give him that role, he must have a lot to do. “Time goes in Sunday, payday is the 1st and 15th of the month, Delta’s office is down the stairs and across the hall. Go so I can add you to the pack registry.” He said bluntly, and Matt left his office.
“Babygirl, do you want to do something tomorrow?” He said, looking up from his desk, eyebrow raised.
I narrowed my eyes at him, still upset from his antics yesterday. “Does it involve me almost dying?” it dawned on me after the fact that that is actually a direct challenge. But I was not nervous this time, it was instinctual, like I knew he would blow it off.
He chuckled. “Does sitting in the movies, watching the new Nightmare on Oak Street tomorrow count?” He smirked.
…..My Lady this man is so corny, I thought to myself, “Why not” I sighed. Human tv was always interesting. If only they knew that the things that go bump in the night were real, but thankfully they don’t… well most.
“Nighflix and chill it is” he wiggled his eyebrows.
I facepalmed, but I give him credit for trying.
“…. Lady.” I mumbled.
“Think of it as an apology for scaring you.” He said with a small smile.
“I forgive you, just don’t do it again.” I said walking to him, and he pulled me into his lap.
“No promises.” He said kissing me on the lips. It was just a peck, but it held desire. “I was wondering would you like to go on a run with me?”
“It would be good for Shimmer.” I said as he gave an approving nod.
“I’ll put this stuff on hold until we get back then. The most important part is done for now anyway.” He said turning off his computer.
We held hands down the stairs, and out the front door.
“I know you’re probably way too sore to shift again so soon, so I was thinking this would be nice.” He said almost as if he were excited.
“I figured that’s what you meant.” I said as we began to jog.
We ran down the sidewalk, getting looks from pack who were out, but we didn’t stop. He made sure to stay at a pace I could keep up, as he was Much faster than me. I could tell by his confident trot. We ran through the shopping, then housing district, reaching a pine needle covered path. I knew this path, it went behind my parents’ house, and I knew where we were going.
The clear stream had a small blue picnic cloth on it, along with a little wine, an assortment of pancakes, bacon, raw venison, and sausage.
“It isn’t much, but I do want you to see that I care… This is how I should have met you.” He said looking me in the eyes. His words were genuine, and his smile was warm.
“I know you care… and when you’re like this… it’s almost like I crave you.” I said putting my hand on his.
“I feel the same…. And for your sake I must try to be better little mate. Until now, my life was filled with only fights and a lonely title… now I have my other half that completes me.” He said kissing me tenderly. It was warm, and he was gentle, pulling me close to him. He put his forehead to mine, and we sat like this for a little while. Through our bond I felt how much he cared for me, and it was returned.
He kissed me again, more passionately, but it was as if he was holding back. I put my arms around his neck, and he held me closer to him. I could feel his heartbeat pick up while mine raced. He let out a soft growl, but with it he pulled away. “…. let’s eat before the food gets cold.” Said Kaiden, his eyes reflected back the late morning light like a reddish tinged honey.
The stream sparkled too like a gem on soft earth. It housed the little fish, who swam in the gentle current. I didn’t know how I didn’t know that this place existed… but now that I did, I think this would be our secret spot.
“Alright.” I said shyly, knowing why he stopped. I didn’t know if I was ready…. But my wolf urged me to keep going. She was, she had been a while, and so had his wolf, but we were still new to each other. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to be with my mate… it’s just that I wasn’t ready, and he respected that. I wasn’t pressured, nor did he make any moves on me that were too fast…
It was almost ironic too. This was the place where it all began. I never thought we’d ever come back to this place together.
“I linked Beta about this spot earlier …. Because had I not been so excited, I think this would have been our first date.” He said a little sheepishly. He was apologizing without directly saying so.
“I accept your apology.” I said smelling his scent. I could see why he does it so much to me, because with his scent came a rush of calm. He was mine and mine alone…. And I wondered when I began to feel this way….
