Book 2 Chapter 38
Heidi
I had already showered, letting my mate sleep in. I looked at the crumpled card, that I had to fish out the trash. John had thrown it away, but the Fifth risked the King’s anger for it… it had to be something. It had to be something important.
I put it in my pocket, and I figured that I would do this with my mate… for now… I needed to apologize to my grandfather… I felt really bad for interrupting his meeting. This was breaking a rule that would have had any other punished… and that’s what I mentally prepared myself for.. I walked down the hall, smelling that he was in his personal office. Grandma wasn’t with him, but I was sure she knew about yesterday. Everyone did.
“My most fragile pup, I know you come to apologize. Sit. Have meat with me.” He said blankly, motioning for me to sit in his office chair.
“Grandfather, forgive me for what I have done…. I have transgressed and I accept my punishment.” I said looking at him eat raw venison ribs, stripping the meat off the bones with no effort. It made me nervous.
“You are but a pup, and your soul is scarred. I would not punish you. You were pushed beyond your capacity. It would not be fair to you, but I must warn you pup. Control or contain yourself in the future.” He motioned for me to accept the pancakes that an Omega held. She bowed deeply, leaving out quickly.
“I will try harder grandfather.” I said accepting the food with a bow to him. He was still the king. He would still expect respect and I would give that to him. We ate in silence, but it wasn’t a bad one. He was just a quiet person. I had hoped that John would have woken up, but he was still in bed, because sitting next to the King so long had exhausted him. We probably wouldn’t be able to leave as soon as Alpha Ron wanted, but at least now we were safe.
“Go, relax yourself at the garden fountain. The sun will aid your healing.” He said pushing a button on his desk for an Omega. I gave him a bow and left down the hall, getting kicked off his floor. He often did that to me when I lived here, because he thought I needed to be outside. I did not, but I wouldn’t question him. I honestly would have been happy reading next to my mate, but I would not upset grandfather.
Everyone bowed respectfully, giving me happy greetings. I didn’t chat with anyone like I usually did, I just wasn’t in the mood. I was polite though, waving back at all who were busy this morning until I got outside. I sat at the white stone table, with tea and a little plate of sliced fruit, looking at the well manicured forest. The area around the castle was trimmed and well guarded, so I was never worried about that.
“Good morning.” Said the Third seat, and I no longer felt safe.
“Good morning, Sir.” I said timidly, hoping he would go away. He sat down and motioned for a servant to bring him what I had. I didn’t ask… they just knew what I liked.
“Why so nervous?” He said sitting taller. I really didn’t want to be near this wolf…
“Um, I forgot I needed to ask my mate something.” I lied, about to get up, but he grabbed my hand. My wolf whined. He had dominated me…
“Young one, I don’t bite. Enjoy this morning with a fellow council member.” He said with a cheerful smile, but I didn’t return it. I sat down, feeling how much stronger he was than me… what should I do?! I was in a panic. “Be calm, I only wish to chat of yesterday. You remember yesterday, don’t you?”
He was lying. He didn’t see half wolves as wolves at all…. Or Omegas, or anyone other than purebred old lined wolves. I didn’t know what to say to him, so instead I looked at my tea…. I didn’t know how to be political… I didn’t want this attention. “I don’t want to talk about yesterday.” I mumbled, and he leaned back in his chair. I just wanted someone to get me away from this wolf. Then we should leave. Said my wolf with a small whine, but it would cause a scene… he’d already dominated me through touching my hand. He let me know without speaking that he wasn’t going to Let me leave.
“I only ask that you join me on a walk.” He said, getting up with his tea. He walked over to me, and put his hand on the top of my back, and I stood. I was in danger… not powerless…. but definitely in danger. To anyone else, it looked like a friendly conversation… so no one thought to come and get me from him.
“Ok.” I said quietly.
I walked with him in the garden, surrounded by enchanted perennials that me and grandmother planted ourselves… some even could glow at night. But right now, I could not focus on their beauty…
“You tremble.” He said casually, looking down at me. He was massive, as all the elders were… “I cannot kill the king’s adopted granddaughter. You are safe.” He said picking a flower and giving it to me on bended knee. I took it.
“What do you want from me? I’m just a small wolf…” I said quietly, submitting to the aura I felt off of him. It was murderous, like he wanted to rip me apart, but on the outside, he looked calm and docile.
“I want nothing more than your happiness little wolf.” He smiled, and I looked down. “Why are you so afraid, you can trust me.” He said quietly but I felt that I had heard someone say that before…
“You don’t even think of me as a wolf…” I said quietly, and his eyes flashed a dark orange-red eyes.
He seemed as if he were going to tell me what his real intentions were, but he stiffened when the wind shifted. I recognized it, and I don’t think I had ever been more grateful that people liked to look out for me…
“My Lady, her majesty requests to speak with you.” Said Mr. Julian. How he found me I had no idea, but no one could question his request… I knew that he was saving me, because if grandmother truly wanted me, she would have linked me. But that he used her title meant that he could not question him.
“Ok.” I said timidly, following the Omega, wanting to thank him but I knew I shouldn’t. I followed him up the stairs to the King’s floor, past grandfather’s office… and to my room. John was fast asleep, but stirred when he smelled that I was upset. His eyes were a dark whisky, then they turned green. He looked like he had had bad dreams, but I knew he wouldn’t tell me if he did. He always tried to protect me, even now when he looked so haggard.
“Heidi, are you ok?” He asked sitting up, covered in sweat.
“I am now.” I told him quietly, and Mr. Julian spoke up.
“It seems you still recover from your first day young one.” He said reaching into his pocket, giving John a few hard candies.
“Thank you.” He said chewing one, not waiting for it to dissolve.
“You saved me.” I said quietly, and he chuckled.
“No, you are the oldest grandpup of the King. To do anything to you would rise hie ire… but needless to say I didn’t trust him with you alone.” He said with a bow, leaving out. John quickly got up, and staggered to me, nearly losing his balance. He seemed taller than yesterday. He embraced me, smelling my scent and growling when he noticed that my hand smelled of Brutus.
“Forgive me little mate of mine, I should have gotten up when you did. There was no telling what he was going to do to you. Next time you leave, wake me up if I’m asleep. I really don’t trust that guy as far as I could throw him. ” He grumbled, but I tried to console him.
“He was never one to get his hands dirty… my guess was that he would’ve tried making me use my powers.” I had made it worse, but he didn’t grip me any harder than he already had. He behaved as if he thought I was glass.
“With the might the Lady has given me, if he ever touches you again, I will rip his spine out through his throat.” He snarled
“John, you don’t have to do that.” I said with more determination than I thought I could. I wasn’t afraid of my mate; I was afraid of what he would do to the council should I get hurt.
