Book 2 Chapter 46
Heidi
I happily ate a grilled cheese at Luna’s desk, waiting for the next person who desired an audience with her. It was Xavier, John’s adopted father. He wanted to discuss some things about Jesse, though I think it was going to be denied. He had asked us in private about it, and she’d already told him no.
He walked in, looking stoic as he bowed deeply, and sat at her desk. Alpha Ron was out with John, and I wouldn’t see him until late tonight today. He had sent for Warrior Commander Shikara to train him, and I could hear his snarling battle cries all the way in the office.
“Your graces.” He bowed again, and Luna motioned her hand with a small wave for him to speak. “As you know… my daughter is a bit of a brat. However, I would like to request that she be moved to ShadowMoon regardless of her position on the matter.”
I saw a flash of her in another pack, but she was being chased by purple eyed wolves…. So it must have been a bad idea… At least no one noticed.
Luna made herself some tea and sat back down. The entire time she was silent, as if she were thinking about it, because she can passively read minds…. Maybe she saw too? “Xavier, I have already told you that I will not condone such a barbaric request. I will not have such a young pup married off to someone who isn’t her mate. It is stealing the choice from her as little as she deserves it…” She mumbled, but he cleared his throat.
“Your highness.” He bowed again. “Please. She does not do well here. She has found other rotten girls in the position you mercifully gave her… and I don’t wish for her to get killed.” He pleaded.
“Dear friend… do you hear yourself?” She had begun to become angry. “If I transfer her, she will get into trouble there as well. Heidi is not just John’s mate; she is the adopted grandchild of the King of Wolves. Unless she possibly swears loyalty to a vampire’s coven, a witches’ den, or gods forbid…. Converse with goblins than she is already lost. She must change herself. It’s nothing we can do as parents other than be good ones. You were. She is an adult in the eyes of the law, and therefore I cannot overrule her desire to stay unless you have Proof that she is incapable to do so…” She sipped her coffee, but Xavier didn’t get up and leave.
“But Luna!” he looked ready to beg, but she waved her hand.
“Begone Xavier. I will not throw her on another Alpha and give my mate and daughter a bad name.” She sneered. “There’s also the fact that ShadowMoon is probably the most loyal pack to the crown, and will likely hunt her for her waggling tongue.” She had lost her temper, but she composed herself. He left without saying a word.
“…. You must have seen my vision?” I asked and she nodded.
“Yes. My mate already has enough to deal with, we don’t need this…. This commoner’s nonsense hindering our plans…” She grumbled.
“What plans?” I asked.
“You will one day sit in this chair, have pups, be Luna…. As well as the fact you’re already a princess. This girl is only alive because he Begged me not to slit her throat after I discovered how she has behaved… how she has treated you… how she spreads her infectious nonsense like the plague wherever she goes... To give her to another pack would be absolutely terrible! She would spread rumors there freely, and lies fly faster than a dragon lord….” She growled, clawing her desk.
“I’m not ready for all that yet!” I exclaimed…. Me and John hadn’t even completed the mating ceremony yet!
“Why is that?” It was her wolf that asked, though she sounded curious, not upset with me.
“Um… I don’t feel like I’m ready…” I said shyly, and she dropped it.
“Then I won’t push you. No one is in any rush… though I would be lying if I didn’t say I wanted grandbabies as much as our line needs them.” She smiled softly, rubbing my hands gently apologizing. “That was not my place… you aren’t even in your 90’s yet.”
“Alpha Ronitus must be the only Earthen One?” I asked and she nodded.
“Yes, he is. He was the only one born Earthen… he has not seen his original pack since he left, so I could only assume that they are dead or made their way to the protected lands for the Unshifted.”
I looked at the clock, and saw we had time before our meeting with Beta Isaac. “I’m going to run around outside.” I told her so she would know where I was going… honestly, I just wanted to feel the wind in my fur.
“I will send for you when it’s time.” She sipped her tea quietly, and I left out. I walked down the stairs, and the she wolves bowed their heads, but none seemed to have an attitude.
It didn’t matter and I didn’t care if they didn’t like me, but they would respect me. Finally! Yipped my wolf, and I didn’t know if she got excited because I was doing what she wanted, or that I sounded more confident. I went into a private area of the gardens, and I shifted, followed by I think Garnet. There was no way I was alone in the backyard, especially with the mess John made… so many branches and sticks littered the ground.
I didn’t really hunt or anything, I just wanted to stretch my legs. I ran around, getting pestered by Sparkle to get sticks, but we didn’t have that much time on break, this was just a jog around the packhouse. It was a little fun though to dodge all the fallen branches and stones that they stirred up in their intense workout.
Hi, you’re really fast. I heard a link from some of the girls inside. I internally sighed. I could only assume they meant to be arrogant and rub it in that they were bigger or something…
Hi. I responded, and soon I saw a huge tan she wolf… I was probably half her size.
Don’t mind me, I was just curious if you were as red as your fur… I’ve never seen a solid red wolf before. You’re really pretty. She linked, and I could tell she was smiling.
Oh, thank you? You’re really pretty too. I linked and we both giggled.
“Natali state your business.” Growled Garnet, who had his arms crossed. She shifted, and crossed hers.
“Nothing. I was just curious.” She growled, and he growled back.
“Keep it that way. Come, Luna linked me to fetch you.” He said seriously, though I could get why. I was only the size of a pup compared to a pureblooded wolf…. even though I had magic, I can’t use it as my wolf.
I started back with Luna, but I kept mindlessly doodling of all things a door, and a key. She didn’t bring it up, and I didn’t either, but now I wondered did it mean something? I probably needed to meditate, or at the very least look into a bowl of water since I didn’t have a crystal ball or anything.
“Knock Knock! It’s the fun police.” Smiled Beta Isaac with a plate of burritos for each of us. “We need to talk about the progression of StoneMoon. Construction of the housing district is delayed because the pipe delivery is late.”
“StoneMoon?” I asked, but he put the plates on the table, and Luna got us some sodas out her minifridge.
“Named so as homage to our original pack… You and John will be Alpha and Luna. Ronitus and your grandfather helped move the displaced wolves I told you about. They are unfortunately mostly pack wolves, so we need to train some of them before we turn them over to you. We also need to build something better than the dirt trail we cut.” She said cheerfully, though I felt overwhelmed…. John had mentioned it to me, but it didn’t feel real until now. I just thought it was a grand gesture.
Royals do that. They give gifts that you wouldn’t actually use…. but it’s expensive, over the top, or both… I also didn’t like that they considered this as a gift. They were wolves, not pets… “For us to have a pack, don’t they need homes, shops, roads…. And other stuff but it isn’t ready?” I asked and she nodded.
“Exactly. No one said you would be Luna Now, but you may be in a few years. You will lead this project once we get a few more permits, but I will be there every step of the way. And I don’t your pack as pets…. This kind of project needs millions of dollars, and you need us. It’s a ‘gift’ because we spend our money, without wanting it returned..” She said with a smile, though I wasn’t. I didn’t want to mess this up. I knew a little already about city planning from my parents, but I never used any of that information until now.
“Don’t worry Assistant Luna, you’ll do fine. We’ve been doing this for centuries, and on top of that, they’re helping too. Right now their in tents, but in a few years it’ll be done. No one will challenge John this soon either, because no one wants a new pack.” He said, drinking a soda.
“That’s actually not what I’m worried about. I’m worried that there are so many wolves who will suddenly depend on us. I don’t want to mess this up, they already had their original homes destroyed.” Luna Aemi put her hand on my shoulder.
“Then you’re already on the right track. Your heart’s in the right place, and you have a team of already experienced Alphas.” She beamed. I was a little confused. I was about to ask was there another Alpha helping, but Beta Isaac interrupted me.
“I was the original Alpha of Lapis, though I surrendered, and he made me his Beta. That’s how it worked in the old days. Now everyone wants to fight to the death, or get all pissy and come back with plots and ploys to sabotage the new Alpha because they can’t accept defeat.” He grumbled.
