Book 2: Chapter 58

Heidi
“John what the fuck was that. I could’ve gutted you twice by now!” Growled Xavier, swinging a dagger at John’s belly.
“Hold it! Time Out! Uncle! Shit!” He complained, while Alpha Ron and grandma stood next to me in the backyard. She didn’t tell them, but I think she went home to rejuvenate. For me, sleep healed me, but for her, there was a special fountain that she drank from.
“Go faster or get stitches son.” He said looking over my shoulder. I was reading one of my favorite tomes on healing magic…. Technically that wasn’t the school I should be learning, but I was getting better at it.
There was a coldness to his eyes, though I could have been imagining it. He was training this hard to kill his own brother. One he never knew, but I still assumed that it weighed allot on him… I was training to be Luna. However, I was ditching this clear skyed Monday. Just thinking about it made me feel so guilty.
And I felt that I should be, but no one else seemed to judge me for my decision. I ditched for the first time since I got here, because I felt like no matter what I did I would fail. I wasn’t a conventual Luna. I wasn’t a strong she wolf warrior, nor did I really like making big decisions or social interaction. I wasn’t a warrior… I didn’t like confrontation… Sparkle whined.
I got bit.
“Ow!” Rahrraam crossed his small arms.
I don’t know what thoughts are rolling around in that head of yours, but if they are sad…. It isn’t allowed. He grumbled.
“What?’ I asked.
I feel your despair. Who does this thing to you, that I may crush them? He growled.
“I’m fine.’ I picked him up to pet him between his ears, but he hopped in my hair.
You lie, but I assume you don’t want to tell me in front of them. Let’s go mistress. He pulled my hair lightly, like reins to ‘giddy up’.
“I’m going to check on Luna Aemi.” I said seeing Xavier flip then pretend to stab John.
“Dead. Again.” He growled.
“I’m trying!” He complained, dodging a clawed swipe. They were not kidding around with him. His claws were fully extended… I think he might’ve actually hurt him if he was too slow.
“Boy you overthink, but when you get it, I feel like you’d be as strong as the Fourth Seat.” He mumbled.
“Have fun!” Said my mate, and I left for the packhouse on my broom. When I got there, there were cars in the driveway, and my gut sank. I recognized the scent… Aikesh was early.
I wondered why Alpha Ron was in the yard this morning.
I landed a little too fast, but I didn’t hurt myself. I ran up the stairs to see that Alpha Wisp and Beta Aikesh were upstairs with Luna.
“Ah, you’re late Luna Heidi, we almost started without you.” She smiled, knowing full well that I was ditching….
“I heard all about your training with Aemi, but we aren’t here for pleasantries. Do you think your mate can best my son?” Asked Wisp with a raised eyebrow.
“I don’t know sir… but I thought the fight was Next Saturday.” I mumbled, but he hummed disapprovingly.
“Speak up.” He demanded, standing tall, walking to me and kneeling to my eye level. He displayed his full aura, something most would not do to others out of respect… and it was too much. It made Sparkle submit, but I tried standing my ground. I showed weakness, something that if others saw would have wolves in my pack disapprove.
“Wisp that’s enough. She has failed the test, bother her no more.” Growled Luna, but he glared at me hard enough to cut stone. He dominated me completely… I wondered did I disappoint her.
“Aemi you’re too soft on her.” He said glancing her way then back to me.
“The purpose of seeing her first was to see her confidence and dominance. She wasn’t ready because she was late. Leave her be.” She demanded, but he ignored her.
“I don’t understand…. How can she smell this powerful, yet be this submissive? Heidi look at me.” His eyes were a silverish white. “You two need allot of work in so little time that it’s asking too much on ones so young, but I believe in you. Hell, even your god does if he sent you to me when you were in danger. Hold your head up higher. Walk Taller. Be Luna! Wolves will not respect a she wolf who holds herself lower than them.” He snorted steam, standing. “Now greet me like a Luna and have better confidence in your Alpha.” He growled.
Luna growled at him louder, about to stand up, but Rahrraam jumped on the table. He put his paws on her hand, and they looked at him in interest, though he couldn’t speak to them. I think it was a fluke last time.
He is right mistress. And don’t forget, you have me too. I am your sword and shield. Though I may not look it, I would die to protect you. Be the leader I know you are.
I stood firm, and shook wrists with him. I had no aura to share, but I had my own dominance. “I’m Luna Heidi. I think John is more than capable of defeating Aikesh.” I stumbled over my words, and he seemed dissatisfied.
“That’ll do. Come son.” He commanded, leaving out the room, but Luna stopped me from following them.
“What about us?! Aren’t we going to go too?” I asked but she shook her head. I was worried for John, especially since those too were so serious… like he was about to fight my mate for real, not just spar.
“They are about to use their abilities, and neither of us have the old blood. You being so near would be a distraction, and honestly, I know Aikesh. This will be bloody.” She got out her chair and patted it… I would sit at her desk as Luna, but it was something I didn’t feel was mine to take. One day I would have my own seat, but she grabbed my shoulders gently, and placed me in it. She sat where I would, kissing me on the top of the head. She called Alpha Ron, and he answered on the second ring.
“There. And before you feel guilty, I must apologize my daughter. We want you two to be so strong, that sometimes we forget that you’re still just beginning your journey.” She admitted.
-----John------
I felt the ground under my feet become springy, and I used it to help me leap at Xavier. I missed, but that was only the second time I’d ever done it. It felt so strange… almost like commanding a new limb.
“Finally! Dash at me again!” He laughed wildly, speeding up.
Xavier had to make both his eyes turn a strange black rimmed red once Heidi was gone. I finally got the hang of using my power to help me move faster, but it probably wouldn’t work on someone stronger. The ground under my feet could boost me, and I used that to finally flip him. It was my dream ever since he trained me with Alpha Kaiden, but it was very short lived.
I barely dodged white claws, followed by being punched in the gut hard enough to cough blood.
“Father I won’t need to shift for this. Come arrogant pup, meet your doom.” Said Aikesh. He was already shirtless and barefoot.
I wiped my mouth. “You’ll be begging to tap out before I’m done with you.”
I was tired, but smart enough not to get another taste of his punches. No one was pulling them; I figured he’d probably try to kill me like the rest of my trainers. And I should’ve known that they would be in on this. They looked emotionless as we both charged clawed hands first. He dodged my attacks like he was bored, but it wouldn’t stop me from trying harder. I wasn’t at top condition, but there was no way I would be when I fought my brother. I dodged a punch, countering it with a clawing of his chest. There were hums of approval.
This was an actual death match.
We circled each other. He released his true aura, but he only felt about as strong as me. I had never learned to hide my power. But what I could do, was go faster to match his speed… something I learned only a half hour ago. It impressed him, even my father, but I knew this must have been what he wanted from me…. It was something I taught myself while fighting all these impossibly strong elders.
“Begin.” Said my father.
We both had the same idea, shifting in midair, clashing, snarling, and snapping at each other. He was here to put me in my place. I was here to keep my family safe. It was all the motivation I needed, biting his side, partly ripping his pelt off. I wouldn’t let go of it either, shaking it until I took enough off that I thought he would surrender, but he kept coming at me.
He grunted in agony, twisting himself around, biting me on the shoulder, and breaking my arm. I could feel the snap. It forced me to let go. He jumped at my chest, going for my neck, but missing because I was just fast enough to dodge. I used pure instinct to guide me, and it was saving my life time and time again. He was fast, like the literal wind, but our intense fight would determine a winner much faster than any sparring match I’d had in a long time…..
Come at me! He snarled, charging me, but I countered swiftly.
I grabbed his left leg, using my power on him, but it wouldn’t turn to sand and dirt. He was a Breathless One. We were immune to each other. I growled for him to surrender, but he only snapped at me, trying to get ahold of something so I would let go. With all my strength, I broke it, shaking him until he fell on his side, and we rolled on the ground in pain but still in combat.
He wouldn’t submit, nor would I. To do so would mean that all this training was for nothing. It would mean that my mate’s faith in me was misplaced, that I couldn’t bring him to justice like I wanted… and I would let down my parents. Both sets….
I let Terracotta have control, and he had had enough. We coughed blood, pausing and circling again.
I will not submit to a pup! He snapped the air.
Age means nothing if you’re in the ground Aikesh. I retorted.
Not if I put you there first, disrespectful PUP! He roared.
“That’s enough!” Yelled my father with whiskey eyes, but if he would not surrender, nor would I. We both charged, leaping at each other’s throats. I didn’t get as much air with a broken arm, but neither could he. We both bled heavily at this point, still clawing and biting at each other.
You think this is a game?! He common linked. Fight me like a man Boy! He spat, biting my ear, trying to force my head into a submission pose.
I clawed his face, forcing him to let go, and we reared up on hind legs. It was getting hard to maintain this form so badly injured, but I wouldn’t think about that now. My wolf was ravenous, to the point to where I only saw red. He let his wolf out in desperation, though it seemed to be intimidated by mine.
You won’t be so cocky when I rip the stupid pompous air out your lungs. I snarled in common link.
I blacked out, and when I awoke I had him by the throat, but he still wouldn’t submit. He kicked me in the belly with his claws, and I didn’t let go. I could feel them rake me deepy He got me good enough that I couldn’t keep my form, but I still held on to him, strangling him now that I was a man. I was covered in my own blood, while he oozed his into the dirt. My father had to pull me off him, but my memory became fuzzy after that. He closed his eyes, and so did I.
But I did it last.
